Mushrooms are a type of fungi that currently function as a food item in Minecraft (Beta).

Island of mushrooms Beta

Red and brown mushrooms found growing at dawn.

Like flowers, mushrooms can be collected but not cultivated - while mushrooms may be planted in direct sunlight (except on ice and glass), they will pop out of the ground in short order. Mushrooms grow in places with little natural light such as dungeons, cave entrances, deep underground, or under trees (particularly in forest biomes). In extremely low light conditions, mushrooms thrive and thus have a more favorable chance of being found in the Nether. Mushrooms growing in the open will pop out of the ground when struck by sunlight, leaving a mushroom that may be picked up.

In Creative Mode, mushrooms were a decorative item and in Survival Test, a food and hazard. Pigs were able to eat mushrooms in Survival Test, but the feature has since been removed, along with sheep eating grass. In Indev, mushrooms are sometimes generated in rare instances under trees or in the shadow of other floating continents in the "Floating" map type. In the latest Beta version, brown mushrooms may be generated in the open when exploring during night. If mushrooms spawn in the night in the open, they will pop out when the sun hits, and you may come across a few random "popped out" mushrooms on the ground. As of the 1.20 update in Alpha, it seems that mushrooms are now more commonplace due to the addition of biomes.

Several bug reports have mentioned mushrooms growing on top of trees and remaining under direct sunlight without popping out of the ground. As this is a rare occurrence, searching for mushrooms on top of trees is probably not an efficient way to forage.

Brown Mushrooms

Template:Food

As of Beta, brown mushrooms cannot be consumed. Brown mushrooms must be crafted with a Red Mushroom and a Bowl to yield Mushroom Stew.

Brown mushrooms healed Template:LifeHearts in Survival Test, but from Indev onwards, they were unable to be eaten on their own. A brown mushroom emits 1 unit of light, just enough to be visible in absolute darkness. Brown mushrooms are somewhat rare in all survival-based game modes, although the Nether realm gives the player a much better chance to find some.

As of Alpha patch 1.2.2, there is a glitch that will cause any block with a brown mushroom to be nearly pitch black. This may have something to do with the fact that mushrooms need to be in darkness to survive.

Spotted Red Mushrooms

As of Beta, red mushrooms cannot be consumed. Brown mushrooms must be crafted with a Red Mushroom and a Bowl to yield Mushroom Stew.

In Survival Test, the consumption of red mushrooms caused Template:LifeHearts damage to the player's health. From Indev onwards, spotted red mushrooms are used along with brown mushrooms and a bowl to craft Mushroom Stew. Red mushrooms are also somewhat rare in all survival-based game modes, although they are much more abundant in The Nether due to the consistently low light conditions of the realm.
