Moss Stone (previously known as Mossy Cobblestone) is a block that was first introduced in Survival Test and remains in all later versions of the game. It looks like Cobblestone, but with moss growing on it. Like Cobblestone, on the upper left, there is an 'L' that points to the north and east. But unlike standard Cobblestone, Moss Stone cannot be smelted or crafted into anything. The only use is for construction - often used in combination with normal Cobblestone for decoration purposes, such as to make buildings look older or to make Nether portals more eerie. It is currently only found naturally as collections of 20-68 at a time in underground Dungeons.
Moss Stone appears very similarly to Netherrack, following a similar pattern, but with different color schemes. Moss Stone being grey with green moss and Netherrack being bright-red with dark-red areas.
Trivia
- It is interesting to note that, while in Beta 1.7, standard Cobblestone patterning changed, Moss Stone's texture remained until 1.8. Also, in 1.7, not only did the contrast change, the top and bottom halves of the texture were swapped. This did not happen to the Moss Stone texture; only the contrast was changed before adding moss.
- NPC villages were originally intended to be made of moss stone.[citation needed]
History
In Beta 1.8 Moss Stone's texture changed from File:Moss Stone-Pre Beta 1.8.png, to its current texture.
In indev, the player could get a full stack of mossy cobblestone (99 at that time) from the chests inside the indev house. Early indev versions also had the house made out of mossy cobblestone. When the chests were removed and the houses made of wood they became impossible to find until dungeons were added in late indev.
