Mooshrooms are unique forms of Cows that spawn in the Mushroom Biome. They have red skin and are covered with red mushroom growths with (oddly) black eyes.
Uses
Mooshrooms can be sheared for 5 red mushrooms, which turns them into Cows. If killed, they drop leather and raw beef, similar to Cows. Mooshrooms can be milked with a bucket as well, but also can be "milked" with an empty bowl to obtain a bowl of mushroom stew.
Behavior
Mooshrooms roam the Overworld Mushroom biome in herds of 4—8. Mooshrooms make no attempt to stay out of water, and will bob up and down to stay afloat. They are extremely aware of cliffs, and will not jump off on purpose unless pushed or attacked.
Breeding
Breeding a pair of Mooshrooms will produce another Mooshroom, but breeding a Cow with a Mooshroom may result in either, chosen randomly. The offspring may be more likely to be the kind you gave wheat to first, similarly to Sheep. If you shear the baby Mooshroom´s parents, the parents stop following the baby.
Baby Mooshrooms will walk faster and be followed by their parents. They will not drop anything when killed, but still can be milked and sheared. Shearing will turn the baby Mooshrooms into Calves.

History
Mooshrooms were added in 1.0.0 and were introduced in the Beta 1.9 Pre-release 1 update.
In Beta 1.9 Pre-release 3, shearing a Mooshroom would cause it to split into two regular cows that could not be killed. When first introduced, Mooshrooms solely inhabited the Mushroom biome, but since Beta 1.9 Pre-release 4 may spawn in other biomes as well. They also could not be milked with a bucket like regular cows can, but this was fixed in later updates.
Since 12w07b Mooshrooms have the new AI system. [1]
Right clicking on a Mooshroom with more than one bowl equipped would turn the whole stack into just one bowl of Mushroom Stew. This was fixed in 1.2.5 .
Bugs
- In SMP when a Mooshroom is sheared, a server-side cow spawns, as well as a client-side cow that spawns for the player who sheared the Mooshroom. (This bug was partially fixed in update 1.2.3, however it would still occur rarely.)
- When a Mooshroom is sheared after it has already bred once, it can be bred again immediately.
- If a Mooshroom stands on top of a fence it will spin rapidly.
Trivia
- Baby Mooshrooms do not have red mushrooms on their back like adults.
- The Mooshroom's name is a portmanteau of "moo," the sound Cows make, and "mushroom."
- In the Beta 1.9 Pre-release mobs folder in the minecraft.jar, Mooshrooms are referred to as redcows, most likely because their texture is mainly a red color shift of the cow texture. Also, Mooshrooms are referred to as mushroomcows as its entity ID.
- When a Mooshroom transforms into a normal Cow by shearing, it emits smoke particles.
- There are only red mushrooms on mooshrooms, not brown ones.
- When sheared, mooshrooms drop red mushrooms and not brown mushrooms. However, one can "milk" a Mooshroom with a bowl to obtain mushroom stew, which normally needs both red mushrooms and brown mushrooms to create.
- Mooshrooms are similar to infected insects with Cordyceps fungi. Just like Cordyceps fungi growing on infected insects and terrestrial arthropods, mushrooms also grow on the Mooshroom.
- It appears that the Mooshroom has the same texture as a Cow but red and white, as well as eyes that appear to be big pupils, with no white areas on the eyes.
