A full moon.
The Moon is a sprite that appears during night time.
The moon illuminates topmost blocks during the night in the same way that the sun illuminates them in the day, but only illuminates them to a Light level of four, rather than the sun's fifteen. You can track the moon's and sun's progress using a Clock.
Grass blocks or Saplings do not grow in moonlight, however they won't decay in moonlight either.
Phases of the Moon

The Moon goes through eight lunar phases. The phases are (in chronological order):
- Full Moon
- Waning Gibbous
- Last Quarter
- Waning Crescent
- New Moon
- Waxing Crescent
- First Quarter
- Waxing Gibbous
This would allow the player to keep track of the passage of time via the Lunar calendar. A full cycle of all eight phases is equal to one Lunar month or Lunation. Thirteen and 1/2 lunations is about equal to one lunar year.
Mobs
Hostile Mobs will spawn around dark areas of a normally generated map. When the moon is up, hostile Skeleton, Creeper, Zombie, Endermen and Spider mobs will appear and attack the player. When the sun comes back up Skeleton and Zombies will burn in the sunlight and drop items after death. Spiders will not burn in daylight, but instead become neutral during the day, only to become hostile again if attacked, when it is night, or when it falls into a dark area. Endermen will not burn in daylight, but hostile Enderman will become neutral during the day, only to become hostile again if attacked or looked upon, but will instantly teleport away and become neutral again if the Player approaches them. Creeper and Slime mobs do not burn, and will remain hostile during the day (See also: Difficulty level)
Stars
Together with the moon, the night sky also consists of stars. The stars look like little white squares and are an overlay over the Void that rotates as the night progresses.

Similar to how a [[carrot on a stick]] is used to control [[pig]]s, the [[player]]s can use a warped fungus on a stick to control a [[strider]]. To do this, the player simply holds the [[item]] in one hand and any nearby striders within view is attracted toward the player. If mounted on a [[saddle]]d strider, the strider moves in the direction the player is facing while holding the warped fungus on a stick. Right clicking with the item makes the strider go faster, but reduces the item's durability by 1 for every speed boost. If the item durability reaches 0, it turns into a fishing rod.
Due to a strider's ability to walk on [[lava]], this is a beneficial [[tools|tool]] for using striders as a safe transport across [[the Nether]]'s terrain, which is otherwise considered difficult to traverse.

A redstone comparator can be placed on the top of any [[opaque]] block with a solid full-height top surface (including upside-down [[slab]]s and upside-down [[stairs]]). {{IN|be}}, a comparator can also be placed on [[wall]]s and fences. The redstone comparator has a front and a back — the arrow on the top of the comparator points to the front. When placed, the comparator faces away from the player. The comparator has two miniature redstone torches at the back and one at the front. The back torches turn on when the comparator's output is greater than zero (the arrow on top also turns red). The front torch has two states that can be toggled by {{control|using}} the comparator:
* Down and unpowered (indicating the comparator is in "comparison mode")
* Up and powered (indicating the comparator is in "subtraction mode")
The redstone comparator can take a signal strength input from its rear as well as from both sides. Side inputs are accepted only from [[redstone dust]], [[block of redstone]], [[redstone repeater]]s, other comparators, and [[observer]]s in specific scenarios. The redstone comparator's front is its output.
It takes 1 [[redstone tick]] (2 game ticks, or 0.1 seconds barring lag) for signals to move through a redstone comparator, either from the rear or from the sides. This applies to changing signal strengths as well as simply to turning on and off.
Redstone comparators check their power state before their scheduled ticks update. This results in redstone comparators not usually responding to 1-tick fluctuations of power or signal strength — for example, a [[clock circuit|1-clock]] input is treated as always off from the side, and always on from the rear. This happens because the signal changes back to its original state before the redstone comparator checks its input states. Items that stack to a max of 16 ([[snowball]]s, [[sign]]s, [[ender pearl]]s, etc.), contribute +4 to the ''full-stack-equivalent'' for each unity (count of 1 item). Similarly, items that stack to 1 ([[minecart]], [[boat]], etc.) contribute +64, and items that stack to 64 contribute +1.

When a comparator measures a large chest or large trapped chest, it measures the entire large chest (54 slots), not just the half directly behind the comparator. A chest or trapped chest that cannot be opened (either because it has an opaque block, [[ocelot]], or [[cat]] above it) always produces an output of 0 no matter how many items are in the container — shulker boxes can always be measured, even if they cannot open.

Trivia
- Night time lasts 7 minutes, plus 1.5 minutes each of sunrising and sunsetting.
- The Moon and Sun are not visible while using the Short or Tiny render distance settings.
- According to Notch, the Minecraft sun and moon actually rose in the north, not in the east.[1] This was a bug, but was left in the game.[2] This was changed in Beta 1.9 Pre-release 4, so the sun and moon now rise in the east.[3]
- In Beta 1.9 Pre-Release 4, one can find out on which hemisphere his/hers Minecraft world is by studying the moon phases (see gallery). The hemisphere that the world is on seems to be chosen randomly and stays the same, no matter how far the player goes.
- The Minecraft Moon is rotated 90 degrees. It appears to be lit from a source in the north or south, whereas it should be lit from the east or west.
- The Minecraft Moon is fixed in the Sky relative to the sun and stars. Earth's Sun and Moon move more slowly against the stars, and the Moon moves more slowly than the sun.
- Minecraft cannot have eclipses due to the above.
- The Minecraft Moon can only be seen at night (unlike the real Moon), unless you are past the building height limit.
- If a player is viewing themselves from the front in third person, during moonrise, the moon will appear red.
- The shadow on the moon appears to be a pixelated circle. This suggests that the moon is round.
