Lower protection on navbox container templates

These templates:

were protected to admin levels many years ago due to being "high traffic". I feel as though this protection is excessive, however; the actual meat of the template is at the /content subpage, which would certaintly be a much bigger target for vandalism. Also, there's other cases of these top level templates such as Template:Biomes which are designed in much the same way, yet have remained unprotected for a good chunk of a year (or possibly even more on ones I might not have checked yet) and have had no incidents requiring reversion. Could the protection on these templates therefore be lowered to autoconfirmed? - User-12316399 (talk) 07:58, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Those templates exist only for technical reasons to enable the actual content to be loaded, as such there's really nothing that needs editing on them. If something that were to come up that needed changing, it could easily be requested. Therefore, I don't see how having admin protection on heavily used templates that have very little need to ever be edited is excessive. The content pages aren't protected as high because they need to be edited a lot more often, making the risk of vandalism worthwhile compared to them frequently being out-of-date while waiting for admin requests to be fulfilled. Isn't the fact that other such container templates have remained unprotected for years without incident proof enough that registered account protection is sufficient? The less trivial edits that need to be requested to the admins and that can instead be dealt with by the community at large, the better, so this protection does still seem markedly over the top. - User-12316399 (talk) 09:47, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Modelling/Texturing - Creeper Glint

Is it possible to make the charged creeper glint (creeper_armor) opaque? Or can I give the creeper an alternative body texture when charged maybe?–Preceding unsigned comment was added by WILL TheRock (talkcontribs) at 2:10, 28 January 2020 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Unable to fix a miscategorization on a page

I added some content to https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/index.php?title=Mechanics/Redstone/Pulse_circuit (the observer falling edge detector). Unfortunately, I inadvertently placed it in its own section (8.3) rather than under the existing Falling edge dectector section (8.2). As new user I can't delete the newly created section 8.3 to place it under 8.2. If someone would correct it or allow me to fix it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.–Preceding unsigned comment was added by Ivanblack9 (talkcontribs) at 17:37, 11 February 2020 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

I've performed the edit for you. Your edit was caught in an abuse filter that is designed to prevent vandalism and spam, but occasionally hits false positives. Once you've made a few edits to the wiki you shouldn't run into that problem any more. Sorry for the trouble and thanks for contributing.--Madminecrafter12 (Talk to me | View what I've done) 17:43, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Adding the ME description to the pages?

Since the latest beta version of Minecraft Earth, 0.12, there is now an official and short description of every blocks, items and mobs in the game so far, I think it would be nice to add those to their respective wiki pages as they are officially written by Mojang and they have a nice humour touch to them. Since they are pretty short, maybe they could fit in the rectangular template on the right side of pages (sorry I have no clues on how to call those haha). Here's an exemple for Pigs : The Pigs are a breed of simple souls, with a fondness for root vegetables and surprisingly strong backs.--Pluche9327898 (talk) 20:26, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
There is no need for that really. The purpose of this wiki is to provide information about details of the game, not to quote the words of the game developers wherever it's possible.
Where the ME version of an entity is different from Bedrock, Java, or Console editions, it should be stated and tagged with {{only|earth}}. For pigs, the article should state that the muddy pig is a variant unique to Minecraft Earth. ~ Amatulic (talk) 23:07, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
Maybe these descriptions could be written in trivia sections? --AttemptToCallNil (report bug, view backtrace) 23:16, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Organization of Minecraft Earth pages

How should we organize topics specific to Minecraft Earth that are large enough to have stand-alone pages, but similar topic pages already exist?

For most things, the differences are small enough that we can add a line with an {{only|earth}} tag to existing articles. Examples would be plants dropped by tappables, the reach of melee weapons being larger, crafting requiring time like smelting, the lack of a day/night cycle, and so on.

But other topics that may warrant standalone pages deserve some thought. For example:

  • The inventory is different enough that it may warrant a separate page.
  • Rarity is also handled differently, and I am having difficulty figuring out how to fold that into the existing article.
  • Crafting has enough differences that a separate article might be needed. (nevermind, I found it already exists, as Make Stuff)
  • Health and hunger are not separate, they are combined into a single health bar that has no notion of hearts. This may need separate treatment also.

A couple days ago I created an article about Minecraft Earth adventures, and we already have an article called Adventure that's about a completely different topic, so I wasn't sure how to title it. I considered:

Any thoughts? ~ Amatulic (talk) 23:08, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Woah, woah, woah... when did I suggest to move to that name? I'm a strong advocate to not have brackets in page titles unless absolutely needed. FVbico (talk) 23:11, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
If I had created the article with that name originally, what would you have suggested? The moment I created that name "Minecraft Earth adventure" I didn't like it and I intended all along to move it. ~ Amatulic (talk) 23:17, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
The parenthesized form is, perhaps, the most typical form of disambiguation. I would say a custom article namespace is also fine, but the subpage arrangement is not searchable. --AttemptToCallNil (report bug, view backtrace) 23:21, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
Make a separate wiki. It's a completely different game that just uses some of the same intellectual properties for the looks but most of the gameplay is different regarding these IPs. The fact that we have to jump through these hoops when naming articles makes it obvious enough for me that it doesn't belong on this wiki. Same will go for Minecraft Dungeons. If there was some way for pages with info about multiple games/versions to have some sort of tabs at the top to click on to switch between them (Java/Bedrock/Earth/etc.) I would be open for keeping it here but idk if that's possible or if it is how much effort that will take to do. -Pepijn (talk) 23:24, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
According to my knowledge, this tabbed approach is not just not hard to implement (i. e. no JS should be needed), but commonly used on Fandom for a very similar, if not identical, purpose (navigation between several articles on the same subject in different contexts). --AttemptToCallNil (report bug, view backtrace) 23:39, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
Considering namespaces can be made to show up in search by default, I'd suggest that. PepijnMC, wether this wiki should have this content is a completely separate discussion on the community portal regarding the scope of the wiki. FVbico (talk) 23:28, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
From my point of view, I am completely uninterested in going to another Wiki for information about Minecraft, regardless of the flavor of Minecraft. Right now I am playing more Minecraft Earth than Bedrock, so naturally I want to find the information here. There are aspects of Minecraft Earth that are different enough to warrant their own stand-alone pages, but most of the features are already served well by the Minecraft pages that already exist. We don't need to be maintaining two separate articles about chickens, for example, when both games treat them pretty much the same way. ~ Amatulic (talk) 01:21, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Repurpose this talk page

The purpose of this talk page has never been exactly clear. The admin noticeboard header, for a long time, has had "This page is for reporting wiki issues. Please post discussions that involve administrators on the talk page." But my question is, under what circumstances would a discussion be appropriate for this talk page, but not for either the admin noticeboard or the community portal talk page? In my opinion, it doesn't make sense having two separate admin noticeboards, one listed as the "real" admin noticeboard and the other being its talk page. I think it would be simpler and more organized to have the admin noticeboard for specific issues that require admin attention and have all proposals or large discussions take place on the community portal talk page, which is much more visible than here. This would leave this talk page to only be used for discussing the admin noticeboard itself, which I doubt would need to be done very often. Thoughts?--Madminecrafter12 (Talk to me | View what I've done) 17:44, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Support, nothing to add. FVbico (talk) 17:47, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
Support, I can not think of a case where there would be an extended discussion that requires administrator attention. In mall cases I can think of, you can just post here to direct admins to the community portal discussion. It also might help reduce the assumption that many new editors have that all decisions need to be made by administrators. KnightMiner · (t) 18:16, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
Support If a discussion requires adminstrative action (which seems like an edge case) that discussion can take place at the community portal. If no admins participate in the discussion, a user can notify an admin once a consensus is reached. The BlobsPaper 22:20, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Unfortunately, logging in with Twitch is a global policy and we can't change it just because one person thinks otherwise. If you really don't think Twitch is a safe website to login (which I'm not sure why you would honestly, as long as you stay at the current URL, twitch.tv, there shouldn't be any security problems), you can't create an account here. Do note that you're welcome to edit as much as you want logged out; there will just be a few disadvantages, such as not being able to edit certain pages, not being able to create articles yourself, having to see ads on every page, and being known by an IP address rather than a specific name. Let me know if you have any more questions.--Madminecrafter12 (Talk to me | View what I've done) 17:52, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

That's not the way to upload an image correctly; unfortunately you have to create an account in order to do so. Is there a specific instance where you think that image needs to be used (I looked in the abuse filter log and was able to find it there)? If so, let me know and I'll see if it's appropriate for that page, and if so add it there.--Madminecrafter12 (Talk to me | View what I've done) 21:52, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Tutorials for creating an infinite water source in only one block of water

Should we add a tutorial for creating a infinite water source using only one block of water that is possible on survival Minecraft. I found two ways for it. Minelogic (talk) 07:54, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Autopatrol candidates

Special:Contributions/Fusion thermonucleaire and Special:Contributions/NineTreyBlud look like candidates for auto-patrolled edits. My watchlist is full of their edits and they all look constructive. ~ Amatulic (talk) 16:05, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

Agree, NineTreyBlud is same level and actions (and older) than me and also fights vandalism, in the case of Fusion thermonucleaire, promote him to bot? (en only) as all his edits to this wiki are interwiki links.---Humiebee Discuss anything with me Look at my edits 19:10, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

I would still mark them as a bot, all their edits to this wiki are bot edits. Maybe add them to both?---Humiebee Discuss anything with me Look at my edits 22:58, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
@Humiebee: @Nixinova: I don't mind either way, as long as the edits don't appear as unpatrolled in my watchlist.

I also nominate Special:Contributions/Blockofnetherite for auto-patrol, although fairly new, that user contributes solid content and constructive discussion, more than just maintenance edits. ~ Amatulic (talk) 14:12, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

Serious bug on wiki

Hello, I am currently experiencing a major bug with the wiki. When I try to use visual editor on certain pages, it gets stuck at 99/100% loading. It only seems to be happening with certain pages, and when I create a page it works fine. It seems like there is some code interfering with visual editor and causing it to never finish loading. Sausagea1000 (talk) 10:02, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Mind linking an example page where it doesn't work? Dhranios (talk) 10:31, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
I found a pretty major one, it's Caves & Cliffs. Sausagea1000 (talk) 13:49, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
I had that same issue, it seems to happen only on large pages, as it worked on disambiguation pages just fine. James Haydon (talk) 16:22, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Ah, if so, it's a long-known issue. The visual editor cannot handle these huge pages. For such pages, use the source editor. --AttemptToCallNil (talk) 17:36, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Oh. Do you have a limit on the amount of bytes visual editor can handle? Sausagea1000 (talk) 12:39, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
This isn't a hard limit, it's a soft one, so no exact limit can be provided. Trying to use the visual editor for a page is probably the only way to know whether it's usable for that page. I'd say, however, learning to use the source editor is a more useful skill in the long term. --AttemptToCallNil (talk) 12:49, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
It did work for me on large pages pre-migration. IDK if this has been a long known issue. James Haydon (talk) 01:53, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
This sort of thing makes me glad that I started on Wikipedia years before a visual editor was available. I tried using the visual editor once, got frustrated by its limitations and clunky ways to do certain things that are straightforward without it, and went back to the good ol' standard reliable wiki source editor.
Because the source editor needs memory only for text, and the visual editor needs memory for all the underlying HTML, CSS, and Javascript associated with a WYSIWYG editor, I imagine that if the page is large enough, it runs up against a memory limit. Amatulic (talk) 15:37, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
Agreed, i used it in my earlier days because it was more convenient, but the UCP migration made me realize about how flawed it was, i was unable to add templates, and when i linked to minecraft dungeons articles, it would write the full namespace "Minecraft Dungeons" instead of the shorter and much more convenient "MCD". James Haydon (talk) 17:28, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Client JSONs can't be downloaded

I'm a data hoarder (about 4 TB of data), which includes all Minecraft versions. I've recently noticed that downloading JSON's doesn't work anymore. It takes you to a broken Mojang page. I've been able to download said JSON's using the launcher, but with re-uploads of versions that just does not work. The download site's URL (piston-meta.mojang.com) doesn't end with, let's say, /23w13a.json, but rather with just /.json. You can add the version number you want to make it work, but it's still weird considering the URL has been working perfectly for years. My guess is that it's something with your buttons. To reproduce it, just go to any snapshot version and try to download a JSON file. This is a small issue, but it's still annoying.
