The video policy describes when and how a video can be included in an article on the Minecraft Wiki. This policy applies only to mainspace articles. Videos from sources listed on Help:Official sources#Video hosting services may be added to articles where appropriate; videos from any other sources are generally not allowed (see below for more detail).

Embedded videos

Embedded videos should be limited to the "Video" subsection of a page (outside of tutorial pages). The only videos permitted on the wiki are videos uploaded by the Minecraft Wiki account; official videos from Mojang, Microsoft, or employees of the respective companies; and videos or series agreed upon by the community. If appropriate, videos used as references may be embedded, though they can typically be left as a click-away link in the references section.

How-to videos explaining techniques, constructions, etc. are allowed only on tutorial pages. Blatant self-promotion is not allowed. If a video is used in a tutorial, it is preferred that the content in the video also be represented internally, such as in prose, in screenshots, or in schematics, as the video may become unavailable at any time without notice. Video creators should refrain from adding their own videos to pages; instead, they should propose their videos on the talk page for community review.

How to embed videos

YouTube videos should be embedded using {{yt|id}} or {{yt|id|width}}. The recommended usage is with centered position and default sizing.

On pages where there are a large amount of videos, it is advised to embed using {{CollapsedVideo}} to save space and prevent long page loads.

Community-approved series

Currently, the only non-official community approved series is the unofficial update overview videos made by Mojang employee, slicedlime. These may be placed in the "Video" subsection of their respective version pages. Individual videos can be discussed on the relevant page's talk page and do not necessitate a mention here.

Animations

Videos and animated images (e.g. GIFs, APNGs) embedded in the article body are only permitted in articles when they are necessary to illustrate some of the mentioned concepts, and a static image cannot fulfill this role alone. Examples of this would include the movement or attack patterns of enemies, the particle effects of certain game elements, the special effects of certain blocks, etc. These videos must be uploaded on the wiki itself.

Notably, cycling images (which have individual, notably different images as frames) are discouraged from usage - cycling images can be easily generated from multiple, already-uploaded images using the {{animate}} template instead.

Other videos

As a general rule, no other videos are allowed on mainspace articles, but if a video is the direct reference to the content of an article, then it may appear in the references (as a textual external link).

For example, videos of specific game versions, especially those which are not archived, can be linked to on version pages as a form of proof of their existence.
