This page's purpose is to list all the bugs players have come across in version 1.8. They pertain to the unmodified, unhacked game. Most of the single-player bugs also apply to multi-player.

Version history also contains newer bugs that may not be listed on this page at the moment. Refresh often as well, this page is changing a lot while we get things organized.

Bugs and feature requests can now be logged at Get Satisfaction: Mojang.

General Bugs

The following seem to affect Windows, Mac, and Linux and both game modes. Unconfirmed / unproven bugs have a (?) next to them.

Gameplay

  • Holding down right-click will not place blocks continuously. It is uncertain whether this is intentional or a bug.
  • Reports of Endermen picking up player-placed blocks.
  • Holding down left click emptyhanded (punching) doesn't continually punch certain items. (minecarts)
  • The game may randomly display 'Saving Chunks' and crash.
  • Middle-clicking (clicking the scroll-wheel button) no longer changes the the selected item (in the bottom bar) to the block middle-clicked on.
  • Shift-clicking chests from the output of a crafting table does not work (When you have crafted a chest).
  • Items that are ejected from a crafting slot after closing it, and then picked up again, leave duplicate icons on the ground. The items may also be duplicating in the inventory.
  • The FPS hiccups frequently.
  • Animals in water, when attacked simply stare at you instead of flee.

Lighting

  • Visible flickering seen in room lit with torches/fire/glowstone. (may be intentional)
  • Placing a torch underwater will leave light in that area even after the torch is destroyed by the water. [1][2]
  • Powered Minecarts aren't having lighting applied in torchlight/fire/glowstone. [3] Powered Minecart on the left
  • Paintings with a block directly above them will stay black.
  • Corners of blocks visible next to new types of stair blocks appear darker than they should. [4]
  • Glowstone recessed into a wall appears dark despite being a source of light itself (originally fixed by beta 1.6). [5]
  • Chests placed in a world created before 1.8 may appear to be a black box. [6]
Workaround: place a torch close to the chest, the lighting glitch will correct itself, then you may remove the torch.

Graphical

  • Missing "cracking" animation on chests when breaking them.
  • Storage Carts have the chest part in an odd location. [7]
  • Glass panes do not properly line up with / attach to double slabs like they do other solid blocks.
  • The breaking animation does not occur when you break a block you are standing on.
  • When you are immersed in lava, the bright red visibility is missing. Instead, the visibility is similar to that of a dark cave.
  • Bobbing up and down in water causes the horizon to alternate between visible and absent. Most noticable when swimming in large oceans.
  • If a ravine is generated in (or next to) a swamp biome, it sometimes cuts through a body of water. In that case the water will not update and flow into the open space, leaving an area that looks like the border of a "world hole". If a block next to the water is updated it will flood a part of the ravine, thus creating a waterfall. [8] (This bug existed in 1.7)
  • Ice blocks clip with iron bars
  • The armor bar obfuscates a bit of the bottom of the map (item). [9]

Stability

  • A number of players are experiencing crashes and errors. Further info is required here.
One such crash involves playing the game at high performance. After a few minutes, the game will simply close itself.
Another crash seems related to changing the state of a furnace. Simply putting in smeltable items and fuel can crash the game. The same happens once the furnace reverts back to the state without the fire animation. This bug will also cause the "timer" of the furnace to become stuck at maximum fuel. Once the last item of a stack is transformed it will quickly lower to zero. (There is no visible change for the first 7 items in a stack, in case you use coal as fuel. Once the last item is transformed, the fire symbol will vanish very quickly.) So the timer might cause an overflow.
Sometimes, the game can crash when entering the "Graphics Options" menu, I believe it might be caused by having certain 1.7.4 options set, or having Optifine on 1.7.4 before updating.

Animals

  • Burnt chickens and cows do not drop their cooked flesh like pigs do, but drop raw flesh instead.
  • The poisonous spiders get stuck in ceilings 1x1 holes, the can get in but keep jumping up and down out of the hole, but are actually stuck. They also get stuck at the ceiling layer if it is out of cobweb.

Weather

  • Rain always has the same intensity and volume, beginnings and ends are sudden

Items/Blocks

  • Tall Grass, Ferns and Dead Shrubs don't have a name in the inventory/Item Selection screen.
  • Cacti may be invisible.
  • Minecarts will refuse to work in a train and will simply stop when hitting each other going North and South directions. Strangely, they will still work properly going East and West.
  • Using bonemeal on a mushroom to create a giant mushroom will cause the block under the mushroom to change to dirt, no matter what type of block the mushroom was initially placed on.

World Generation

In Ocean biomes there are occasionally 2*3*3 (x*y*z) underwater pockets of air. These can form inside rock faces, on the ocean floor, or even in the middle of the water.

General Survival Bugs

The following seem to affect Survival mode on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Unconfirmed / unproven bugs have a (?) next to them

Gameplay

  • F6 used in Creative mode to fast forward the day/night cycle also works in Survival.
This may not be a bug.

Above bug also can crash the game in Survival mode.

Crafting

  • Major Item Duplication Bug: put an item into the crafting table's interface -> double tap E -> when the item ejects from the table and you pick it up automatically, move the item/stack in your inventory, another of that item appears singularly in your inventory. The singular item is infinite, the initial stack is not.
  • Also, items ejected from the crafting table produce extra bouncing icons (sprites?) that seem to adhere to the standard decay timer of dropped items. This may be tied to the duplication issue.
  • Works with crafted items and blocks, even dirt.
  • Workaround: Wait for the extra dropped items to decay and put the duplication item on top of an incomplete stack.

General Creative Bugs

The following seem to affect Creative mode on all operating systems. Unconfirmed / unproven bugs have a (?) next to them

Gameplay

  • A number of items/blocks are missing from the inventory menu (water/lava/bonemeal etc)
  • Falling into the void causes player death (probably not a bug)
  • You can fall through the y=0 layer inside the void and probably won't find your hole you came from
  • Random floating blocks, caves can be one massive space with floating mine shafts [EDIT] The space is not a bug but the floating blocks may still be one.
  • There appears to be no limit to the height that can be flown up to. (not a bug?)
  • After ascending to a certain y-value (about 107-109)during a rainstorm, you can no longer hear the rain.
  • It is possible to be lit on fire, although it does no damage.

Tools

  • Shears don't cut leaves

General Multiplayer Bugs

The following seem to affect CMP/SMP modes on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Unconfirmed / unproven bugs have a (?) next to them

General

  • Parrying doesn't work.

Mobs

  • Endermen never attack you, even if you look at them and stop looking at them.

Creative Single Player 1.8 (CSP) Windows

Unconfirmed / unproven bugs have a (?) next to them. Observed on Windows OS, may exist on Mac OSX and Linux

General

  • You can punch mobs from a very long distance.
  • Items are dropped when harmed by explosions or environment (such as a cactus losing its lower trunk).
  • Items that are dropped can be picked up (though not always), and will accumulate if present in the active bar.
  • All maps are the same, a map centering at x=0, z=0

Blocks

  • TNT drops itself when hit and when taken will not fill an empty inventory space like other blocks.

Torches

  • Underground auto-generated torches does sometimes not generate propely, whereas it is turned away from the block it is on, or does not generate light.

Survival Single Player 1.8 (SSP) Windows

Unconfirmed / unproven bugs have a (?) next to them. Observed on Windows OS, may exist on Mac OSX or Linux

General

  • (?) Hitting a dirt block with a sword in Survival causes a "Saving Chunks" crash.

Boat

  • Occasionally, boats are unresponsive and do not move when the player turns.

Lighting

  • The hand's lighting seems to randomly skip between normal and dark in first person. [10]

Beds

  • Using a bed in survival will occasionally cause it to skip to sunset instead of sunrise.

Doors

  • (?) For some players, doors do make a sound when left clicked

Furnace

  • Using a furnace will crash the game and display 'Saving Chunks'. (doesn't affect all players)

Lava

  • (?) Swimming in lava causes the screen to become black. EDIT: It actually causes the render distance to be very low (you can only see a few blocks in front of you), and the fog is black.

Mobs

  • Endermen make sounds identical to those of a Zombie. It is unknown if this is an intentional placeholder or not.
  • Squid do not drop experience points upon death.
  • Occasionally a spider when suffering damage will glow much more brightly than normal. See here.

Survival Multiplayer 1.8 (SMP) Windows

Unconfirmed / unproven bugs have a (?) next to them. Observed on Windows OS. May exist on Mac OSX or Linux

Building

  • Stone blocks destroyed by a wooden pickaxe turn into Iron ore immediately after being destroyed. Stone blocks drop cobblestone before turning into Iron ore. If you destroy the Iron ore you will receive the drop. If Iron ore is left alone it will disappear after a few seconds.
  • Frequency of occurrence: Every few blocks.
  • Doors (that are placed by other players?) can be opened and closed, but do not play a sound effect, nor do they cause your arm to swing.

General

  • Servers may experience lag upon the death of a player who is carrying many experience orbs.
  • Servers still running pre-1.8 maps may experience major lag
  • (?) Some people are unable to eat food.
  • (?) Some people's Hunger Bar never diminishes.

Graphics

  • When it starts raining there are places where you can see the rain but not the bouncing particles and places where you can see the particles but not the rain. See here.
  • Whenever you are in third person view and you get inside the water while the camera stays above the surface the screen will turn blue as if the camera itself was underwater. See here.

Mobs

  • (?) Endermen are unresponsive and do not interact with the player.

Flying

  • If a player is flying and then is moved from Creative to Survival he/she will not be able to stop flying until moved back to Creative.
  • While swimming water may act weirdly

Server Crash Report

  • I've had this happen after a player teleported to me. Note I was getting "not enough RAM" warnings on startup of the software although I have 6GB. No mods, fresh download. Hosting with Hamachi.

Creative Singleplayer 1.8 (CSP) Mac OSX

Unconfirmed / unproven bugs have a (?) next to them. Observed on Mac OSX. May exist on Windows or Linux.

  • It is possible to break through bedrock.

General

  • If you break a block with redstone on it the redstone will drop and mess up your inventory if picked up.
  • You are not supposed to eat while playing Creative, however Golden Apples can be eaten like normal.

Combat and Mobs

  • Upon shooting an arrow using a bow when in creative mode, you lose the arrow.

Survival Singleplayer 1.8 (SSP) Mac OSX

Unconfirmed / unproven bugs have a (?) next to them. Observed on Mac OSX. May exist on Windows or Linux.

Graphics

  • Trying to change visual settings in the main menu will provide an error message and a black screen.
  • All mobs can have lighting issues.
  • Steps placed perpendicular to blocks create an odd shadow on the block
  • If you walk into or near to a wall that is next to iron bars or glass panes your view slips into the wall and goes black
  • Paintings are not properly lit
  • If you mine, the blocks get a brownish tint, and when you place a torch in the brownish tint, the sides mess up

Smelting

  • When a furnace starts or stops smelting, the game saves the world and crashes.
  • Sticks act as infinite fuel (?)

Minecart

  • There are some instances of floating minecart tracks in strongholds.

Terrain Generation

  • Grass blocks appear in the sky
  • Floating pumpkins may spawn
  • Pockets of air generate in oceans
  • Mobs may become trapped in a tree's leaves when they spawn
  • Tundra biomes appear to no longer generate
  • In NPC Villages, houses' doors can be generated buried by other blocks, even the gravel roads.
  • In NPC Villages, torches don't emit any light unless taken down and replaced
  • When generated in/near ravines or caves, abandoned mineshafts are generated in awkward ways (i.e. floating support beams, floating tracks, etc.)

Building

  • Iron Bars, Fences, and some other items can now be placed on top of tall grass.
