Directors

Moved from User talk:Majr#Directors by NickTheRed37 at 13:38, 1 March 2015 (UTC).

This is the topic to inform of changing the MCW:Directors page and adding/removing director rights. Please don’t take this as a duplicate of Former admins and MCW:Directors above, because this topic allows to inform of that in a much more organized manner.

Minecraft Forums interwiki

Since the Minecraft forums changed their design, their links also changed, and while old style links are still compatible, it is impossible to locate the old style links from the new forum design. As such, two of the old Minecraft Forum interwikis (mcf and mcftopic) are obsolete. The news links appear unchanged.

The new url consists of first http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/ (note the addition of the "s"), then base on the type it contains the following:

  • Sub-forums use a specific combination of letters and dashes
  • Topics use any combination of letters and dashes followed by a slash, then the topic ID

A solution would be changing mcf to http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/$1 and mcftopic to http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/topic/$1, though this would break previous links. The only other solution would be adding one or two new interwiki links.

User:KnightMiner · (t) 01:00, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

So, are the minecraft forum interwikis going to be updated, or can new interwikis be added with the new forum urls? (to prevent from breaking old interwiki links) User:KnightMiner · (t) 01:36, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
I don't see a satisfactory solution. Having to make mcf2: and mcf2topic: links would suck, and since edit summaries can't be edited, we can't ever change the existing links without breakage. MajrTalk

One option would be calling the new interwikis "forum" and "forumtopic", and considering the MCF interwiki links deprecated. Since this is the Minecraft Wiki makes the Minecraft part somewhat implied, and they are essentially the forums of this wiki (as opposed to the gamepedia forums, which could be listed as "gpforum" if needed later, similar to the difference between "help" and "gphelp".) User:KnightMiner · (t) 15:54, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
Alright. It's a bit longer than I'd like, but it's better than breaking all the edit summaries. I'm wondering if there is a need for forumtopic. It would only save one character over doing forum:topic/xx. MajrTalk

Actually, probably not. Really the only reason to use it would be because we had a forum topic interwiki before, but sunce the urls are the same and the length is just one character, I would be fine just having the forum one. User:KnightMiner · (t) 15:09, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

My wiki account name was recently changed from User:Legoless to User:McLego. I wasn't given any notification about this and I'd prefer if it could be changed back. Thanks! --McLego (talk) 22:45, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

That was likely due to the migration to gamepedia, quite a few usernames changed then if the user had not logged in since then.
I would advise you to contact Game widow, since usernames are now handled by Curse. User:KnightMiner · (t) 14:56, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello there. Unfortunately, that username is taken by another Curse user somewhere. I'm guessing that this issue is leftover from the migration. Recently, the talk page guidelines were added and some major changes were made to the wiki rules and the style guide. Can we add a site notice alerting users to the changes for a bit, since otherwise the changes may go unnoticed to those who do not watch the community portal (especially in the case of the talk page guidelines, which mostly are new or previously unstated rules on a new article). Triggering abuse filter randomly

A couple recent edits by me have triggered an abuse filter rule called "Global AF - New spam filter", is this from here or the curse team? In either case, there was no spam, it seems to trigger on edits related to adding {{t}} User:KnightMiner · (t) 20:04, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Or its related to <nowiki> or <code> tags. User:KnightMiner · (t) 20:12, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
That is our global spam filter. It should only warn you and not actually prevent you from doing anything. — Game widow (talk) 20:24, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, it is only warning me and I can still save the edit, but its a bit of an annoyance since I'm not spamming. User:KnightMiner · (t) 20:32, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Our expert will have a look at it and try to find a way to avoid those false positives. If you can pinpoint some text that definitely gets caught, that would help. — Game widow (talk) 20:45, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
I can't say for certain without being able to see the global filters, but I'm guessing the problem is a contains_any(norm()) clause; they're very prone to overmatching and false positives, since they ignore punctuation and whitespace and don't try to match word boundaries. For example, one of our filters used to contain the rule contains_any(norm(added_lines), "viagra"), which was triggered by the wikitext "/* Trivia */ grammar fixes". ccnorm tends to be safer in most cases.
The text "unless the" triggers the global filter for some reason, if that helps. -- Orthotopetalk 23:18, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Its definitely the tags. I've been getting these as well for a past few edits of mine with those included. None of my edits had the text "unless the" included. BDJP (t|c) 00:31, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
OK, thanks :) every little bit helps — Game widow (talk) 01:08, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
The text "User:Falkirksnh" seems to match the filter sometimes, which would likely be inconvenient for that user User:KnightMiner · (t) 03:28, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
I had a problem with this too (trying to add an ambox to my user page on Russian wiki triggered the filter). — user:NickTheRed37 t/c (f.k.a. Naista2002) 06:06, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
The new deploy for the AbuseFilter that's hitting this should be out soon. I am majorly sorry for the issues that it's caused, and will keep an eye on this wiki's abuse log to make sure it doesn't hit any more valid edits.

14:12, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Also, just to clear it up for future issues. It's not caused by tags, or uses any norm/ccnorm, or the likes. It is simply a BIG regex system for matching the majority of the spam articles. This is why it sometimes matches the text used by normal people. It is constantly being reviewed and re-tested. :)

Fullurl and automatic plain links

Currently, the parser "full url" starts links with // instead of http://, causing it not to get detected by the automatic plain link styling from MediaWiki:Common.css. Can the css be changed to also define #content a.external[href^="//minecraft.gamepedia.com"] as plain? User:KnightMiner · (t) 03:38, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

This has been added, great suggestion!

00:44, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

To answer your query about the signature, it seems interwiki transcusion is now transcluding nothing, and the signature field now automatically adds "SUBST:" to templates, combine the two and you get blank text where the sig belongs (might be a good idea to use a standard sig, as both interwiki transclusion and transclusion in signatures are now being advised against in the software, rather than just by userbase. The former might be fixed by setting a variable in the PHP though). User:KnightMiner · (t) 01:45, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
Actually, my signature is a NOSUBST setup, so it literally puts the inter-wiki link :? Ehh I'll look into it eventually.

Exemption of a few rules for Runecraft Mod

Hi, I would like to request the exemption for the rules about having server IP addresses on pages and the one about videos for all the pages of Mods/Runecraft. I request the videos because they have tutorial information on the mod's runes.
That page has already a few IP adresses and also alot of videos if this request is denied I will remove those links.
--Amuxix (talk) 05:59, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

You already have permission to add videos as you feel are needed for mod articles, see Minecraft Wiki:Wiki rules/Video policy#When to use them (linked from rule #8).
As for the IPs, while I cannot give you permission, I can advise the administrators that I think the usage on the article seems like a decent usage of server IPs, as this is a server side mod. User:KnightMiner · (t) 14:30, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I will leave the server IPs if any admin wants them removed I can do so. --Amuxix (talk) 16:11, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

KnighMiner’s user page rules aren't official, so, you can't say that that is not against the official rules, that do not exist. dand0 (talk) 06:29, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
Most of the rules stated there are already in place, though not stated anywhere (from past discussions asking "Is this allowed?", though you may correct me if I'm wrong about any of the specific rules), the whole point of the discussion is to state those rules somewhere, and allow a spot for new rules. In any case though, the specific page is not an official guideline at this time, and users wishing to make them official, suggest new rules, changes to previous rules on the guide should discuss it over there.
Also, it is likely that NickTheRed was simply pointing out a relevant discussion to add the rules, rather than stating those rules should be followed. User:KnightMiner · (t) 18:56, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
LauraFi's example is from half a year ago and I believe Naista2002/NickTheRed37 has stopped the behavior discussed there (no?). I don't think the rules actually state that posting misinterpretations of the rules is against the rules, but it certainly should be discouraged (ideally by correcting the misinterpretation in a follow-up post, not by deleting it). An ad hominem attack is certainly against the rules and admin action would be justified.
NickTheRed37, I would encourage you not to try to correct other people's behavior in their userspace unless it's an actual rules violation (not simply differing from guidelines). Other people's userspace is theirs and they should be free to break any guideline that doesn't actually break wiki rules. —munin · 16 px 16 px · 19:17, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

The spam filter applies to all namespaces; there's no way to make an exemption for user pages. (Most spammers use their user pages, so we probably wouldn't want to even if it was possible.) If it's added, you may be unable to edit your own user page – trying to save a page containing a blacklisted URL can trigger the filter, even if the URL was there before. -- Orthotopetalk 04:32, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

If any of the userboxes contained external links, that would cause the issue, so if you don't want to wait to create the page, try removing any user boxes with external links until you are autoconfirmed.
I think the reason external links are blocked on userpages is to reduce new user spammers from creating userpages flooded with virus links and advertisements. User:KnightMiner · (t) 15:51, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

The autoconfirmed users page is probably outdated; it hasn’t had any substantial edits since late 2011. Only someone at Curse can look at the settings file, but I’m guessing an upgrade set it back to the MediaWiki default, which is 0 days and 0 edits. — Orthotopetalk 09:09, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Your common css is hiding the class ".show-ads", which is now used in the main body element. Removing that from the list should fix it, so if you know a bit about your browser's styles setting you can add .show-ads { display:block !important } there to override your personal css while you fix it, otherwise and admin can fix that for you. (see also #User css above). User:KnightMiner · (t) 15:47, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Renewing discussion from here, the user now appears to be invoking personal rules on talk pages unrelated to the userspace. One example:

The user also seems to have some anger issues going as far as to remove this discussion, and also attacking me to not revert before reading and getting some sense knocked into me. The user also states that he / she will attempt to evade a block to get his / her point, clearly violating rule 3. BDJP (t|c) 15:33, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Hungarian admins

Hungarian user Baranyaibb emailed me a few hours ago pointing out that the Hungarian wiki has only one admin and asking more admins to be selected. Since I don't know anything about the Hungarian wiki community (and don't have the ability to promote admins there even if I did), I'm posting this here to solicit feedback. User:Dinoguy1000Special:Contributions/Dinoguy1000? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:24, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

According to :hu:Minecraft Wiki:Adminértesítő (which is the correct interwiki link to the admin noticeboard btw) and MCW:Directors, there is one bureaucrat, :hu:User:TunSha (Last activity in june 2011) and five administrators: :hu:User:Harbonah431 (june 2013), :hu:User:Icguy (november 2013), :hu:User:LeGrund6 (january 2012) and :hu:User:Martin200005 (may 2015). I think it's reasonable to get some new admins for them but all I see that could be done is that you add something to the site-notice saying that there are some admins needed in the Hungarian wiki or at least a message which inspires (at least some) Hungarian readers of the English wiki to contribute to the Hungarian wiki. (Many, many users use the English wiki even if the Minecraft Wiki exists in another language. I know of some German people who always use the English wiki although the German wiki is complete (as far as it can be). Also, the Hungarian wiki seems to be pretty inactive). Maybe we could also reanimate this fizzled-out project from 2011. The text however would need to be changed.
Also, a bureaucrat (Majr has rights there too I guess) could add a site-notice in the Hungarian wiki too that says that the wiki needs help and that it has too little admins. However, the notice should also say that instead of directly requesting adminship, new users should contribute to the wiki and then will probably become admins (if their edits were constructive) and it (the notice) should be in Hungarian (you could ask Baranyaibb for translation). Sou could also do the same with every other wiki which has pretty inactive or few admins.
I don't think the English wiki community can't do more about this problem. | violine1101(Talk) 20:53, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
I've fixed the Hungarian interwiki, thanks for pointing it out.
Truth be told, I don't have much personal interest in pursuing this. If there are specific, immediately actionable things that can be done and that I have the necessary permissions in the right places to do, I have no problem with doing them, but I don't really have the interest to work on developing any solutions here. User:Dinoguy1000Special:Contributions/Dinoguy1000? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:18, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
It sounds like Martin200005 is the only active admin there. If he (or the Hungarian wiki community) can suggest users worthy of adminship, I’m sure Majr would be willing to promote them, but I don’t see what else we can do here. -- Orthotopetalk 23:09, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

Some missed administrator edit requests

A few edit requests that have gotten lost (the third and fourth have not been too long, but I figured I'd bring them up while mentioning the rest).

  1. Template:License - Remove the category "notice templates" from license templates, as they are either not notice templates, or would do better in a subcat since they have their own category.
  2. MediaWiki:Talkpagetext - Setting {{archive}} to display as the talk page header on archive pages, to discourage editing of archives (rather then advising new topics).
  3. MCW:Directors - Stating our policy on administrator requests on an article, rather then leaving it unstated until someone asks. I had posted it on the talk page of this page for a bit of discussion, but there was no response.
  4. Markus Persson - not my request, but linking the relevant Ludum Dares, (also moving a protected archive page to a more proper name.)

Fix template overlap on Opera and Firefox

Can we add the CSS

/* Fixes element overlap on Firefox and Opera */
.atfmrec {
    margin-bottom: 1em;
}

To MediaWiki:Common.css? It fixes the overlap with {{quote}} and {{infobox}} by reducing the margin of the side ad, as Firefox and Opera see the element as a little too big. User:KnightMiner · (t) 15:30, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

I edited {{quote}} like so, but I do like this solution, because it more generally addresses .atfmrec, which I didn't imagine was possible. – Sealbudsman (Aaron) frameless t/c 18:52, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
This only fixes it if there is something in contentSub. MajrTalk

KnightMiner, in what cases are you seeing the overlap -- with or without an adblocker? If only with an adblocker, I might suggest: .atfmrec:empty, .contentSub:empty { display: none; } . That additionally solves the infoboxes sitting too low on the page. – Sealbudsman (Aaron) frameless t/c 13:01, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
@Majr: I thought I tested it on a page like that... Anyways, the css .atfmrec { 9px 0 0.5em 1em } fixes it by using a little less space, but it still does not look that bad.
@Sealbudsman: I actually normally do not see the overlap as I use chrome, I was mainly interested in fixing it so we don't have to move the quotes. I previously was using Opera with adblock to test it, but that no longer causes a problem in the latest version. (apparently version 12 claims to be the latest, despite 30 being the latest...) Anyways, the issue still exists on Firefox, but only when using adblock.
As for using the pseudo class "empty", it does not seem to work as the element is not technically empty, it just has invisible content. User:KnightMiner · (t) 16:07, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, not needing to move quotes is how I came to this issue, too. And whoops, I guess I was lazy and didn't notice that .atfmrec wasn't empty. .contentSub is empty, however, and the pseudoselector could still apply. Unless the space there is intentional.
What about keeping the left-margin on the atfmrec, but moving the top and bottom margin to the contents? Like so: .atfmrec { margin: 0 0 0 1em; } .atfmrec :last-child { margin-bottom: 2em; } .atfmrec :first-child { margin-top: 15px; }. The idea is to be both adblocker-agnostic (whether content is invisible or removed, the vertical margin disappears) and ad-agnostic (if that element is filled dynamically by the advertiser, which I don't know but I am guessing, it applies the margins correctly no matter how many elements they want to throw in there.) – Sealbudsman (Aaron) frameless t/c 16:49, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
The main issue with .contentSub when not filled it has less of a margin, causing the overlap.
As for moving the margin, I had not thought of that. Matching specific children does not work so well, as all adblock seems to remove is iframes, but we could place the margin on the iframe element to fix the issue, like so .atfmrec { margin: 0 0 0 1em; } .atfmrec iframe { margin: 15px 0 2em; }. User:KnightMiner · (t) 17:21, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Ah. If in fact adblock only removes iframes -- for instance if, in the future, there's never a div or something inside .atfmrec that adblock hides -- then yeah that looks pretty good. – Sealbudsman (Aaron) frameless t/c 17:48, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

@Majr:, your recent edit to the CSS leaves identical margins in place, since (at least in my browser) #cdm-zone-02 is never hidden -- and because there was no change in margins, Quote continues to overlap. It may not have been apparent because the Quote table still has margin-top: 50px; margin-bottom: -50px; top: -50px; position: relative; as a stopgap measure, but if you remove those styles in a browser's element inspector, you'll see what I mean. Apologies if you knew this, I just realize it was never explicitly said. – Sealbudsman (Aaron) frameless t/c 12:16, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

#cmd-zone-02 is empty when adblock is enabled, so it should only have margin when there are ads. I tested with the quote changes removed and it works fine. MajrTalk

It must only be empty with some adblocks, but not all. In the one I have, the content is just hidden, and you can see the Quote overlaps when it doesn't have the special margins. – Sealbudsman (Aaron) frameless T/C 15:44, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
For me when using adblock there still is an iframe within #cmd-zone-02 (which takes a bit after page load to pop up it seems). It does not actually display as anything, but rather runs a couple scripts (which at a quick glance seems to configure some styling stuff based on OS and screen size). One option would be replacing #cdm-zone-02:not(:empty) with #cdm-zone-02 > div, as assuming adblock removes that div element, it would not add any styling. User:KnightMiner · (t) 02:17, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
I must've had some custom rules, as after reinstalling adblock, the iframe and div now appear (the page also takes an incredibly long time to finish loading now, too).
We cannot rely on styling these though, the div after the first frame is not removed by adblock, and it is sometimes not inserted at all, and some ads are loaded directly inside .atfmrec, after #cmd-zone-02 instead of inside it.
The end-all solution is for people using adblockers to also adblock .atfmrec. We can't really be expected to support adblockers, the site is not intended to be used without ads. MajrTalk
