The Minecraft launcher is the login and downloader front-end to the stand-alone client. It is responsible for downloading the main Java packages, including minecraft.jar, which holds the code and resources of the game such as textures, and LWJGL. It also acts somewhat like a basic and easily bypassable copy-restriction by forcing the user to login to a paid account when running for the first time. It is possible to use the launcher to run versions of Minecraft from nearly any era. However, not every version of the game is included (to see a list of all missing versions, see versions not in the launcher). The current launcher is the sixth launcher for Minecraft, and the second that was built to automatically update itself.

Every time the launcher is executed, it checks a specific directory where Minecraft stores its files called ".minecraft". It checks a file called "launcher_profiles.json" for login credentials. If the file does not exist, is corrupt, or no user is logged in, the user must login with a valid premium account, otherwise the user will be directed to play the Demo version or purchase the game.
When logging in, the launcher will first try to verify the login. If a valid "launcher_profiles.json" file exists but there is no Internet connection, the launcher will offer a "Play offline" mode if a player was logged in when it was last closed. If the connection is successful, the launcher will then, depending on profile options, compare the latest version in the latest "versions" directory to the latest version reported by the server. If the selected version does not exist or the latest installed version is outdated when "Use latest version" is selected in the profile, the launcher will download all Minecraft components and Java binary files. It will also synchronize everything in the "assets" folder (see Resource pack).
Finally, upon a successful update or installation, the launcher will execute the Minecraft jar (via "javaw.exe", Oracle's Java Virtual Machine executable.) It is possible however for there to be missing ".jar" files, in which case the launcher will attempt to replace the missing files automatically but will stop if there is no connection.
Currently, the Minecraft launcher supports 57 languages.

A profile with Alpha and Beta versions enabled
The Minecraft launcher has the ability to play old Alpha and Beta versions of the game. Currently, snapshots, Alpha, Beta, and all Release versions are available to play. Four Pre-classic versions, four Classic versions, and one Infdev version are already added under the names "old-alpha version".[2] No Indev versions are currently available from the launcher.
To enable the old versions either click the "Launch Options" then turn the "Historical Versions" on then open your profile or make a new one, next select any of Alpha/Beta versions on the Version box then click "Save" button.
However, these versions are very out of date and may be unstable. Any bugs, glitches, missing features, or crashes that result from instability will never be resolved as only later versions are supported. Mojang strongly recommends that you play them in separate directories than your other saves to avoid corruption.[3]
Skins
Skin options in the launcher
You can change or add your custom skin within the Minecraft launcher. To change or add your skin click the "Skins" button, then click the "Browse" button to navigate through your file system for your skin file. The file must have a resolution of 64×64 in order for the launcher to accept it as a skin file. Additionally, the skin file must be in a .png format. After you have found the skin file, click the "Save" button to confirm your in-game skin.
You can reset your skin to the Steve or Alex defaults by clicking "Click to reset".
You can choose between player models - either Classic (Steve) or Slim (Alex).
If the game is running when the user enters this menu, a warning appears at the bottom of the launcher: Minecraft is currently running. Skin changes may not take effect until the game is next started.
Profiles
When you open the launcher for first time, it creates a profile that selects the latest version of Minecraft - it cannot be removed.
However, you may create a game profile of your own in the launcher. Click on the "Launch Options" button, then click "Add New" to create one. After this, name your profile as you want it. If you leave it, it will be named "Unnamed Configuration". Then, optionally, select a profile picture from the launcher or a custom one. However, it must be a 128×128 .png picture. Select the version you wish to play, and click "Save" to confirm your profile. If you want to edit a profile, just click it. The same applies if you wish to delete a profile. Simply click the profile you want to delete and then click the "Delete [X]" button to remove it.
You can download server versions by clicking "Download Server".
If you want to resize the game, turn "Resolution" on to change the game window size.
You can turn "Advanced Settings" on to show more profile options.
If you want to change the .minecraft file path, turn the on the "Game directory" option. Now, navigate to the folder where you wish to relocate the .minecraft folder. You can also open the Minecraft profile by clicking the green arrow-shaped "Go to folder" button.
If you turned "Snapshot Versions" on, it creates a "Latest Snapshot" profile automatically.
As of 2.1.1432, the launcher has 9 command-line options available:
--clean - This option deletes the game and runtime folders, including their contents, from the working directory.
--launcherui
--workDir - This option, followed by a path (relative or absolute), will change the location (and/or name) of the .minecraft folder.
--nativeLauncherVersion
--tmpDir - This option, followed by a path (relative or absolute), will change the location (and/or name) of the tmp folder.
--lockDir
--winTen - This option adds support for Windows 10. Since the launcher now supports Windows 10 fully, this option is unnecessary and seems to have no effect.
--proxyHost

The --workDir option can be used to create a portable installation of the game. For example, --workDir . can be used to make the launcher use the current directory (no matter what your current folder is called).

The client requires an internet connection on the first run and for updates, but after that the game supports playing offline.
Command line arguments are accepted to launch the game. The flowers/pink petals that appear depend on the biome, meaning that in order to obtain specific flowers, the player must travel to biomes where the flowers are found naturally. Using bone meal on a 2-block flower (rose bushes, sunflowers, lilacs or peonies) will cause one of the same type of flower to drop, without breaking the original. This is the only way to reproduce these flowers, since they cannot generate from using bone meal on grass blocks.
Using bone meal on a non-transparent block that is underwater generates [[seagrass]] on that block and surrounding blocks. Sometimes, if in a [[warm ocean]] biome, [[coral]] and [[coral fan]]s may have a chance to generate as well, and in Bedrock Edition, coral (not coral fan) can be generated in any biome. In order for this to work, there must be 2 water blocks above the block the bone meal is being used on, and the lower one must be non-flowing water.
Using bone meal on a [[sea pickle]] on a [[coral block]] creates sea pickles. This generates sea pickles up to 3 [[block]]s (of coral) away, so a 7+ × 7+ block (49+ blocks) of coral may be necessary, to return the most sea pickles per given bone meal attempt (more attempts grows them more numerously, exactly - including the range of it growing, like grass with heights on grass blocks - as coral and coral fans, though those others being non-solid blocks).
Using bone meal on [[netherrack]] adjacent to [[nylium]] converts the netherrack into nylium of the same type. If both crimson and warped nylium are adjacent to the netherrack that was applied with bone meal, there is a 50% chance that either type of nylium is created.
Using bone meal on [[nylium]] causes the corresponding [[roots]] and both types of [[fungi]] to appear on the nylium block and other nylium nearby, with the type of fungi matching the type of nylium being more common. In addition, using bone meal on the side of warped nylium creates [[nether sprouts]] and [[twisting vines]].

When fired, arrows fly in a [[wikipedia:Trajectory of a projectile|ballistic trajectory]] affected by gravity and drag in [[air]], [[water]], and [[lava]]. The arrow's velocity is multiplied by 0.99 every game tick, and it also experiences 20 block/s<sup>2</sup> of downward acceleration induced by gravity.
Arrows travel approximately 3 [[block]]s when fired parallel to a flat plane with no charge, 15 blocks average with medium charge, and 24 blocks average with maximum charge. When fired from a fully charged bow, arrows can travel 120 blocks if fired from an optimal angle. The maximum height an arrow fired by a bow can reach is around 66 blocks.
An arrow fired in water experiences much more drag than in air: it moves less than 8 blocks before completely losing horizontal speed and falling straight down, although the knockback of the arrow remains unaffected. It also leaves a trail of bubbles in its wake.
There is a random variable to the trajectory of an arrow, given by <code>this.rand.nextGaussian() * 0.0075 * (double)inaccuracy</code> for the x, y and z coordinate. The inaccuracy is relatively small, becoming noticeable over larger distances. The inaccuracy of different arrow delivery devices may differ. An arrow's speed determine the damage it inflicts. When fired from a fully-charged unenchanted bow, arrows do {{hp|6}} of damage, with a smaller chance to damage for up to {{hp|11}} via critical hits. They inflict up to {{hp|5}} damage from a medium-charged bow, and {{hp|1}} from a bow with no charge. Arrows fired from dispensers always do {{hp|3}} of damage unless their velocity is modified by an external source. Arrows fired from [[crossbow]]s do {{hp|6}} to {{hp|11}} of damage.
Arrows trigger [[Damage#Immunity|damage immunity]] on hit. However, unlike other methods of damage that may bypass invulnerability under certain conditions, arrows hitting the mob while it is invulnerable lose all speed and drop to the ground, dealing no damage unless they contact another mob.

A redstone comparator can be placed on the top of any [[opaque]] block with a solid full-height top surface (including upside-down [[slab]]s and upside-down [[stairs]]). {{IN|be}}, a comparator can also be placed on [[wall]]s and fences. The redstone comparator has a front and a back — the arrow on the top of the comparator points to the front. When placed, the comparator faces away from the player. The comparator has two miniature redstone torches at the back and one at the front. The back torches turn on when the comparator's output is greater than zero (the arrow on top also turns red). The front torch has two states that can be toggled by {{control|using}} the comparator:
* Down and unpowered (indicating the comparator is in "comparison mode")
* Up and powered (indicating the comparator is in "subtraction mode")
The redstone comparator can take a signal strength input from its rear as well as from both sides. Side inputs are accepted only from [[redstone dust]], [[block of redstone]], [[redstone repeater]]s, other comparators, and [[observer]]s in specific scenarios. The redstone comparator's front is its output.
It takes 1 [[redstone tick]] (2 game ticks, or 0.1 seconds barring lag) for signals to move through a redstone comparator, either from the rear or from the sides. This applies to changing signal strengths as well as simply to turning on and off.
Redstone comparators check their power state before their scheduled ticks update. This results in redstone comparators not usually responding to 1-tick fluctuations of power or signal strength — for example, a [[clock circuit|1-clock]] input is treated as always off from the side, and always on from the rear. This happens because the signal changes back to its original state before the redstone comparator checks its input states. However, certain setups such as powering any input with two separate observer pulses at the same time will cause a redstone comparator to respond to 2 gametick pulses.

Generally speaking, the comparator output signal strength represents the average fullness of the slots, based on how many of that item form a full stack (64, 16, or 1 for non-stackable items).
The ''Minimum Items for Container Signal Strength'' table (right) shows the minimum '''''full-stack-equivalent (FSE)''''' to produce different signal strengths from common containers. A '''''full-stack-equivalent''''' quantifies how many normal 64-stackable items are needed to output a corresponding signal strength. The 's' is a constant 64, with the additional amount needed following after.
One may also consider the terms: '''c''umulative-weight''''' or '''''weighted-sum''''' instead of '''''full-stack-equivalent'''''.
Items that stack to a max of 16 ([[snowball]]s, [[sign]]s, [[ender pearl]]s, etc.), contribute +4 to the ''full-stack-equivalent'' for each unity (count of 1 item). Similarly, items that stack to 1 ([[minecart]], [[boat]], etc.) contribute +64, and items that stack to 64 contribute +1.
Example 1: 3 ender pearls will contribute a 3 x 4 = 12 ''full-stack-equivalent''.
Example 2: 16 ender pearls and 60 redstone dust contributes a 16x4 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.
Example 3: 1 minecart and 60 redstone dust contributes a 1x64 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.
Example 4: To produce a signal strength of 10 from a hopper, one requires a ''full-stack-equivalent'' of at least 3s + 14 = 206 but strictly less than than 3s + 37 = 229. This can be done with 3 minecarts, and 14 dirt.
When a comparator measures a large chest or large trapped chest, it measures the entire large chest (54 slots), not just the half directly behind the comparator. A chest or trapped chest that cannot be opened (either because it has an opaque block, [[ocelot]], or [[cat]] above it) always produces an output of 0 no matter how many items are in the container — shulker boxes can always be measured, even if they cannot open.

A hopper can be used as a container, as a crafting ingredient, and as a redstone component.
A hopper has an "output" tube at its bottom that can face down or sideways and provides a visual indication of which block the hopper is set up to drop its items into, if that block has an inventory. To place a hopper, use the {{control|Place Block}} control while aiming at the surface to which its output should face (Hoppers ''do not'' orient themselves automatically). To place a hopper directly on the face of an already interactable block, the player can {{control|sneak}} while placing the hopper. When a hopper receives a redstone signal (and is considered to be "activated"), all three functions stop. To avoid confusion over the terms "activated" and "deactivated", powered hoppers are often described as being '''locked''' and unpowered hoppers described as being '''unlocked'''. End crystals are of two kinds: the ones with a base beneath them are created either by game mechanism or by the {{cmd|summon}} command; while the base-less ones are created by players by manually placing the crystal items on top of [[obsidian]] or [[bedrock]].
The base appears to be made of bedrock, with a crystal hovering over it. While in the End, a crystal continually generates fire at its current position, one block above the base (directly on top of the block the base is embedded in), replacing any other block at that location. This fire is capable of spreading.
The end crystal entity is not solid and can be walked through freely. End crystals can be pushed by [[piston]]s, but they explode if moved while on fire. Because fire is checked only when an entity moves, end crystals do not normally take damage from their own fire unless moved.

Chains can be used to suspend [[bell]]s, [[hanging sign]]s, or both types of [[lantern]]s (normal lanterns and soul lanterns), as the chain texture connects to the chain of the lantern seamlessly as if it were part of it, and it connects the hanging sign chains together. Chains do not require a supporting block to be placed whether it is on the top, next to it or at the bottom. It can exist completely free-standing in mid air<ref>{{bug|MC-178791}}</ref> and it can be rotated. Chains connect horizontally or vertically, but not across different orientations (so a chain with N orientation does not connect to a chain with E orientation in the adjacent block).
Horizontal chains one block above a surface may be walked over. Horizontal chains two blocks above a surface prevent players from traveling past them. Vertical chains block travel if targeted directly, but may be skirted.
Precision is required, but chains can be walked on, allowing for inconspicuous, although somewhat costly, bridges.

Trivia
In the top left corner a barely visible button can be found which randomly shows either a creeper face or a shrug kaomoji ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. It glows white when clicked, but has no use at all.
The creeper face as well as shrug were used for the language selection menu during the beta phase of the launcher, but when a globe was added instead both were simply moved downwards to be kept as an Easter egg.
Hovering long enough over the "Play" button will cause random mobs appear on the right side of the window.
