A Magma Block is a light-emitting natural block that can be found in The Nether and Overworld. They were implemented in Java Edition 1.10 "Frostburn Update" and Pocket Edition 1.1.3.

A magma block is a solid version of Lava. This block deals 1 (Half Heart) damage for each second that a Player or Mob is in contact with it, regardless of Armor or protective Enchantments.

It is possible to walk across magma without taking damage by wearing boots with the Frost Walker enchantment on them, sneaking, or consuming a Potion of Fire Resistance.

Magma blocks placed underwater will created a bubble effect above them. All entities caught in the bubble effect will be sucked downwards.

Like Netherrack, magma blocks, as of 1.12, are an infinite fire source. Even though it's harmful, the bubbles will provide the player with oxygen meaning it prevents them from drowning.

  • If a player dies from touching a magma block, the death message will read: "<Player> discovered floor was lava."
  • Despite dealing 1 (Half Heart) damage to a player, much like a cactus in the Overworld, it can't be used to dispose of items. However, it can be used to surround a base, if so desired. The benefit of this is due to its major abundance in the Nether.
  • If a player walks over a magma block covered with 2 or fewer layers of snow or a carpet, they will still take damage unless they are wearing boots with the frost walker enchantment or have consumed a potion of fire resistance.
    • However, if there are 3 or more layers of snow, the player will not take any damage.
  • As of 1.12, magma blocks lit on fire will stay lit forever, much like Netherrack.
  • This is one of only a few blocks with a constantly-changing animated texture, another example being Sea Lanterns.
  • As of 1.13, the magma block, if placed underwater, will pull any Entity or item down if an entity or item is above the block.
    • Also, as of 1.13, magma blocks can naturally generate on ocean floors in the overworld. They generate in structures.
  • Mobs are afraid of Magma Blocks and will not pathfind over them. This can help make a mob-proof base.
