Many plants and animals, such as the coral and tropical fish in this picture, rely on liquids such as water to survive.

Liquids (or fluids) are a special type of block that can cause "liquid" to flow over the terrain, forming rivers or falls. There are two blocks of this type in the main versions of Minecraft: water and lava.

Other liquids exist in Minecraft Earth, such as mud.

There are other in-game substances which show liquid properties but cannot be placed as liquid blocks, mainly potions, dyed water,‌[Bedrock Edition only] milk, and honey.

Properties

Minecraft liquids can be placed like solid blocks, but cannot be picked up without a bucket or a bottle.

When placed in open terrain, liquid blocks are a source for a flow, unless they are confined by other blocks. A completely confined liquid renders as still.

Source blocks that are at least partly liberated begin to flow, spreading according to the flowing fluid rules, and render as flowing, with animated lines demonstrating their direction of flow.

A source block appears as being "full" nearly to the top of its containing blocks (if any) while flowing liquid blocks appear to be "emptier" the further they are from their source.

Liquids can interact with each other, and with other blocks they are placed next to or flow over or past, according to the properties of the affected block.

Flowing liquids exert pressure on entities pushing them in the direction of the flow. Item drops that fall into a flowing liquid are carried along until they get caught in an eddy or the flow reaches its maximum extent. Most mobs are able to float in liquids, so they do not drown, but cannot swim upstream, which makes a liquid flowing into a dead end a useful mob trap.

Liquid blocks are non-solids in the same way that air is, so placing a solid into a liquid block, source or flowing, succeeds if placement detects the side of a solid block through the liquid.

Water source blocks placed such that they create a waterlogged non-solid block behave as any source block would, with the exceptions noted in the following sections.

Water cannot be placed in the Nether, in both survival mode and creative mode. The only way to get water into the Nether is by using the /setblock command.

Mechanics

Depth

Liquid blocks have a depth value that measures how "empty" it is. A source block having a depth value of 0, so it is full. Flowing liquids have a depth value equal to their source's depth + 1, with a maximum possible "emptiness" value of 7 where the flow stops. Thus, a flowing block next to a source has depth value 1, the next further away 2, and so on till the flow stops.

The rendering of liquids is controlled by their depth values both in the height of liquid level and the direction of flow displayed.

Lava in the Overworld has a maximum depth of 3, but in the Nether its maximum depth value is 7.

Spread

Once a source block is placed, the liquid spreading procedure begins. It does not matter if the source placed makes a waterlogged block or is placed into a block of air; both work the same way. This block is the first block on a sort of list of blocks involved in the spreading procedure.

First, each open side of a liquid block starts a flow. A water block in a flat plain spreads out in all four directions until it reaches the depth limit, forming a diamond shape nine blocks point-to-point. A water source floating in midair flows out to each of its four sides and then down. Each flowing block created is added to a list of blocks to be considered for further spreading.

Now the blocks directly below each source or flowing blocks on the "spreading list" are checked:

  1. If that block is air, it is replaced by a flowing liquid block with a depth value of 0. This new block is also added to the "spreading list".
    • Because of this, liquids can flow much farther if it flows downward occasionally than if it remains on a flat surface.
  2. If the block below is a waterlogged, non-solid block, then checking stops as the waterlogged source block has its own "spreading list".
  3. If the block below is a type of non-solid block that is affected by the liquid, then it may be converted into a dropped item. The block is then replaced by a flowing block with depth value 1 greater that the block above and is added to the spreading list. The block above is removed from the "spreading list".
  4. If the block below is a solid block, or one of a few non-solid blocks (e.g. fences) that are unaffected by liquids, flow spreads out to all open sides. These additional flowing blocks are added to the list.
    • If all four of the surrounding blocks are also solid, the spreading procedure stops. This is how a lava or water column that does not spread over the ground can be created.
  5. If the block below is a liquid block of another type, the rules for mixing liquids are considered. If new flowing blocks are created they are added to the list.
  6. If the block below is a source block of the same liquid, then flowing stops.

Flowing liquid has a speed value that governs how fast the spreading effect takes place. Water in the Overworld and lava in the Nether move at the same speed of 1 block every 5 ticks, or 4 blocks per second. However, lava in the Overworld is much slower than water, and moves at only 1 block every 30 game ticks, or 2 blocks every 3 seconds. Note that in Bedrock Edition, liquids may flow faster than they should, especially if an adjacent observer is repeatedly activating, due to MCPE-73342.

Liquids consider the shortest distance to the edge of a cliff, and prioritize flowing in that direction.

The shape of the ground around a flow is considered when evaluating its spread, giving preference to the creation of water or lava falls, for aesthetic purposes. During the evaluation of horizontal spread, the 5-block area around source and flowing blocks is checked for air one block below the liquid block. These air blocks, and the blocks preceding them, are all converted to liquid blocks with depth level of 1 greater than the current block to establish a simple flow, but are not added to the collection for later consideration.

For example, the flow of water from a single source placed within 7 blocks of an edge is only one block wide to the edge, and then falls as a one block wide stream, as demonstrated in the image to the right.

In the same test setup the water flow from a stair or banner is one-directional.

Dripping

If particles are fully enabled in the options menu, solid blocks that have air below and liquid above drip, as a visual indication that only one layer of blocks separates the player from the liquid above. Dripping lava does not cause damage or start fires. It can take several seconds before dripping starts.

Block updates

These actions cause a liquid block to update:

  • Another block is placed into its space
  • Liquid starts to flow in from an adjacent block
  • An established incoming flow stops

Generated structures never cause block updates to adjacent liquids when they generate. For example, a cave entrance that is created partly below water level at the edge of a body of water or lava does not cause the liquid to flow until it receives a block update. On the other hand, liquids created as part of a structure flow immediately if not completely confined; this includes holes in the bottom of an ocean that open into a ravine below.

Mixing

When the two liquids interact, the results vary depending on the position of the liquid source.

  • If lava flows vertically into water, the water turns into stone.
  • If lava flows horizontally into water, the lava turns into cobblestone.
  • If water flows horizontally into flowing lava, the lava turns into cobblestone. Prior to Java Edition 1.16 snapshot 20w13a, a hiss sound and puff of steam effect occurred, but the water and lava remained unchanged.
  • If water flows vertically into flowing lava, either cobblestone or nothing may result.
  • If water flows into a lava source block, it creates obsidian. The lava source is destroyed in the process, so unlike with cobblestone, obsidian is not renewable with this method.
  • If water falling vertically touches a lava source block on any side, the lava turns into obsidian—even if the water would not otherwise run into the lava.
  • If lava flows over soul soil next to blue ice, the lava turns into basalt.

== Usage ==

Ice bombs can be thrown by {{control|using}} them. They are affected by gravity.

Like with [[ender pearl]]s, there is a short cooldown before the player can throw another ice bomb. The cooldown is shown in the [[hotbar]] by a white overlay that shrinks before the player is able to use it again.

Ice bombs explode upon hitting most [[blocks]], including non-solid blocks, but not [[air]]. They also explode upon hitting other entities, but do not deal [[damage]], and unlike [[egg]]s and [[snowball]]s, their impact is not considered an attack and does no damage or knockback. When exploding, any [[water]] (including flowing water, but not [[waterlogged]] blocks) in a 3×3×3 cube around the ice bomb freezes into [[ice]]. Ice bombs can be used to contain and displace [[mobs]] in ice under water.

While [[endermen]] teleport away from arrows shot at them, they can be hit by ice bombs.

A sword can be repaired in an [[anvil]] by adding units of the [[tiers]]' repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% of the sword's maximum durability, rounded down.

Some [[mobs]] can spawn with a sword and have an 8.5% chance of dropping them upon death caused by player. This chance is increased by 1% per level of [[Looting]], up to a maximum of 11.5% with Looting III. [[Zombie]]s and [[husk]]s can drop iron swords, [[zombified piglin]]s and [[piglin]]s can drop golden swords, and [[wither skeleton]]s can drop stone swords. The dropped sword is usually badly damaged and may be enchanted. Stone swords dropped by wither skeletons are never enchanted.

A [[vex]] wields an iron sword that normally has a 0% chance of dropping, because their main hand's <code>HandDropChances</code> is 0. However, this chance increases by 1 percentage point per level of Looting. It is never damaged{{only|java}} and may be enchanted.

{{IN|be}}, [[pillager]]s and [[vindicator]]s that spawn from raids have a 4.1% chance (5.12% chance on hard mode) of dropping a damaged iron sword. This sword has a 50% chance of being enchanted.

Pressing {{control|attack}} while holding a sword inflicts damage on both mobs and other players. Upon damaging a mob or player, the sword's [[Item Durability|durability]] decreases by 1.

Attacking a [[boat]] or a [[minecart]] with a sword stone tier or higher instantly destroys it {{only|java}}, without decreasing the sword's durability. Otherwise, it requires 2 hits, with neither decreasing durability.

If the attack recharge meter is 84.8% or above and the player is on the ground standing or moving slower than the [[sprinting]] speed in a straight line, the sword performs a sweeping attack indicated by a gale [[particle]] that reaches nearby enemies for {{hp|1}} and knocks them back; the amount of knockback is 80% that of the basal knockback and does not benefit from the [[knockback]] enchantment. As result, the player can perform a sweep attack while they are sprinting diagonally but it is impossible to perform a sweep attack at the same time as a critical hit or while riding some [[entity]]. All enemies within an 1 by 0.25 by 1 block area of any part of the attacked mob and whose feet are 3 or less blocks away from player's feet are affected. A sword can also be used to destroy certain blocks 50% quicker, sometimes much quicker than with fists. Using a sword to destroy any block that doesn't break instantly by hand decreases its durability by 2; this includes bamboo, despite that the sword is the fastest tool for breaking it.<ref>{{bug|MC-195168||Swords consume double durability than they normally would when destroying bamboo saplings, bamboo, or cobwebs}}</ref>

If a sword is enchanted with [[Silk Touch]], either using [[Creative]] or [[commands]], cobwebs the sword destroys will drop the cobwebs themselves instead of the usual string. This is due to the sword being classified as the proper tool for cobwebs.

The following table shows the time it takes to break blocks on which swords have any effect. Colors indicate what gets dropped:

Previously, since the [[Adventure Update]], all types of swords could be used to parry to block some forms of damage. If the player is blocking with a sword when attacked, the sword deflects 50% of incoming damage from melee, non-magical projectiles like arrows, and explosions, along with minimizing airborne knockback. The sword is held in front of the player and its durability is not reduced by blocking. The player moves at a slower rate than [[sneaking]] if blocking with a sword. Sword blocks could be engaged and disengaged instantly, with no delay between the input and damage mitigation nor cooldown between lowering a block and raising a new one.
 
After the [[Combat Update]], the sword blocking functionality was replaced by blocking with [[shield]]s and to accommodate the [[dual wield]] system. Shields negate more damage and knockback than sword blocking from "blockable" attacks (they block 100% damage and knockback after [[Java Edition 1.11]]), but, unlike swords, they lose durability, have a 0.25 second startup period before damage can be mitigated and can be temporarily disabled by attacks with an [[axe]].

== Usage ==
A redstone comparator can be placed on the top of any [[opaque]] block with a solid full-height top surface (including upside-down [[slab]]s and upside-down [[stairs]]). {{IN|be}}, a comparator can also be placed on [[wall]]s and fences. The redstone comparator has a front and a back — the arrow on the top of the comparator points to the front. When placed, the comparator faces away from the player. The comparator has two miniature redstone torches at the back and one at the front. The back torches turn on when the comparator's output is greater than zero (the arrow on top also turns red). The front torch has two states that can be toggled by {{control|using}} the comparator:
* Down and unpowered (indicating the comparator is in "comparison mode")
* Up and powered (indicating the comparator is in "subtraction mode")

The redstone comparator can take a signal strength input from its rear as well as from both sides. Side inputs are accepted only from [[redstone dust]], [[block of redstone]], [[redstone repeater]]s, other comparators, and [[observer]]s in specific scenarios. The redstone comparator's front is its output.

It takes 1 [[redstone tick]] (2 game ticks, or 0.1 seconds barring lag) for signals to move through a redstone comparator, either from the rear or from the sides. This applies to changing signal strengths as well as simply to turning on and off. 

Redstone comparators check their power state before their scheduled ticks update. This results in redstone comparators not usually responding to 1-tick fluctuations of power or signal strength — for example, a [[clock circuit|1-clock]] input is treated as always off from the side, and always on from the rear. This happens because the signal changes back to its original state before the redstone comparator checks its input states. However, certain setups such as powering any input with two separate observer pulses at the same time will cause a redstone comparator to respond to 2 gametick pulses.

The redstone comparator has four functions: maintain signal strength, compare signal strength, subtract signal strength, and measure certain block states (primarily the fullness of containers).

Generally speaking, the comparator output signal strength represents the average fullness of the slots, based on how many of that item form a full stack (64, 16, or 1 for non-stackable items).

The ''Minimum Items for Container Signal Strength'' table (right) shows the minimum '''''full-stack-equivalent (FSE)''''' to produce different signal strengths from common containers. A '''''full-stack-equivalent''''' quantifies how many normal 64-stackable items are needed to output a corresponding signal strength. The 's' is a constant 64, with the additional amount needed following after.

One may also consider the terms: '''c''umulative-weight''''' or '''''weighted-sum''''' instead of '''''full-stack-equivalent'''''.

Items that stack to a max of 16  ([[snowball]]s, [[sign]]s, [[ender pearl]]s, etc.), contribute +4 to the ''full-stack-equivalent'' for each unity (count of 1 item). Similarly, items that stack to 1 ([[minecart]], [[boat]], etc.) contribute +64, and items that stack to 64 contribute +1.

Example 1: 3 ender pearls will contribute a 3 x 4 = 12 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 2: 16 ender pearls and 60 redstone dust contributes a 16x4 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 3: 1 minecart and 60 redstone dust contributes a 1x64 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 4: To produce a signal strength of 10 from a hopper, one requires a ''full-stack-equivalent'' of at least 3s + 14 = 206 but strictly less than than 3s + 37 = 229. This can be done with 3 minecarts, and 14 dirt.

When a comparator measures a large chest or large trapped chest, it measures the entire large chest (54 slots), not just the half directly behind the comparator. A chest or trapped chest that cannot be opened (either because it has an opaque block, [[ocelot]], or [[cat]] above it) always produces an output of 0 no matter how many items are in the container — shulker boxes can always be measured, even if they cannot open.

Minecarts with chests can be retrieved by attacking them. By doing so it drops as an [[item]] and any other contents of the chest are dropped as well.

Minecarts with chests can be placed by {{control|use item|text=using its item}} on any type of [[rail]].

Chest minecarts' contents can be accessed by pressing {{control|use item}} button on them. The interaction makes no sounds and the chest does not show the opening or closing animation, unlike regular chests.

The boost that minecarts with chests gain from [[powered rail]]s is dependent on their load. For example, from a 1 powered rail starter track, an empty minecart with chest travels 64 blocks, but a full minecart with chest travels only 16 blocks (opposed to 80 blocks for an occupied normal minecart and 8 blocks for an empty normal minecart).

Another physical property of chest minecarts is their ability to be stacked. While three chests can fit in an area three blocks tall, up to four chest minecarts can fit in the same area. Like other minecarts, an unlimited number of minecarts with chests can exist in the same block space.

Minecarts with chests are also able to interact with [[hopper]]s. Hoppers can take items out from the minecart chest if they are below the track as the minecart rolls over it or put them in if the minecart rolls under a downward facing hopper. Hoppers can also input items if they are facing into the side of the minecart.

Opening or destroying a minecart with chest angers [[piglin]]s.
