A lever is a type of switch. Levers, like the button, pressure plate, and redstone torch, can be connected with redstone wire to be operated far away from the target block. Levers can be placed on any opaque block. Levers can be placed on walls, floors, and ceilings.

Power

Levers differ from buttons in that the charge they provide is stable - once clicked a lever will remain on or off until clicked again. Clicking a lever also causes a visual change as the shaft of the device moves from one side to the other. Their stable nature makes levers well suited to controlling devices that need to remain in one of two states for an indefinite period, such as minecart tracks or locking mechanisms in advanced circuits.

When placed on the side of blocks, up is off and down is on. On the top or bottom of blocks, on is south or west, off is north or east. Mobs cannot turn on a lever, or turn it off.

An ink sac is an item dropped by a squid upon death used to create black dye, dark prismarine, and books and quills.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Squid
A squid drops one to three ink sacs upon death. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 1 to 6 with Looting III.

Fishing
Ink sacs can be obtained as a "junk" item from fishing. The Luck of the Sea enchantment decreases the chance.

Trading
Wandering traders sometimes sell 3 ink sacs for an emerald bedrock. Apprentice level librarians also buy 5 ink sacs for one emerald.

Natural generation
Usage
bedrock, ink sacs can be also used in banner patterns:

Dye
Dye usage
* Each type of dark prismarine can be crafted using varying amounts of 8 prismarine shards.

Trading
Journeyman-level librarian villagers have a 2 chance to buy five ink sacs for an emerald. They always offer the trade .

Signs
Ink sacs can be applied to signs or hanging signs to revert glowing text back to default.

Le Tricolore (French for The Tricolour) is a joke item from Java Edition 23w13a_or_b.

Obtaining
One le tricolore and one la baguette is given to all players when French mode gets activated. Deactivating the mode will remove le tricolore from the player's inventory (but not la baguette; containers such as chests are not affected).

Le Tricolore is not available in the creative inventory, but can be obtained by using the give command.

Flint is a mineral obtained from gravel.

Obtaining
Mining
When a block of gravel is mined, there is a 10% chance for a single piece of flint to drop instead of the gravel block. When mined with a Fortune-enchanted tool, this chance increases to 16% at Fortune I, 25% at Fortune II, and 100% at Fortune III. Gravel mined using a tool with Silk Touch or gravel that fell on a non-solid block never produces flint.

Trading
Novice-level fletcher villagers have a 50%bedrock or 2java chance to offer 10 pieces of flint for 10 blocks of gravel and an emerald.

Trading
Apprentice-level fletcher villagers buy 26 flint for an emerald.

Apprentice-level leatherworker villagers have a 2 chance to buy 26 flint for an emerald java, and always offer the trade bedrock.

Journeyman-level toolsmith villagers have a 2 chance to buy 30 flint for one emerald in Java Edition, and always offer the trade in Bedrock Edition.

Journeyman-level weaponsmith villagers buy 24 flint for an emerald.

Issues

Issues relating to "Lever" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia

 • The lever, along with wall mounted torches, flowing lava and water, sloped rails, tripwire hook, Spider legs, Snow Golem arms, and Villager arms are the only surfaces in Minecraft that are not either parallel or perpendicular to the ground.
 • Levers placed on the top or bottom of blocks in a north/south orientation have off facing south and on facing north. Levers in a east/west orientation have off facing east and on facing west.
 • Anything powered by a single redstone torch, such as a powered rail block, can be powered instead with a lever. This is useful if you are low on redstone, as the materials needed for crafting levers are much more common, and renewable. This also allows easily turning the current off if need be.
 • Putting a lever next to an opened door, then destroying the lever closes the door.
 • Levers can be used to provide quick, if imprecise, pulses of redstone charge, by quickly flicking them on and off. This compares to buttons, which have a built-in delay.
 • Levers cannot be placed on snow, ice, or glowstone.
