A boat is an item and vehicle entity. Boats float and move easily on water, and can be ridden, so they allow fast transportation on the ocean or any large area of water; however they are quite fragile and easily destroyed by running aground. Boats can be pushed around by water currents, allowing automatic transportation and boat storage, and the use of boats as mechanism components. Notch said that he'll try to make "fancy huge customizable boats."

Once crafted, a boat may be placed anywhere in water, or on land by right-clicking, but cannot be recovered once placed. You can also place a boat in lava, but if you try to ride it the boat will break and you will fall into the lava and start taking damage.

Like minecarts, a boat may be right-clicked to enter or exit. Boats can be entered from any direction, including below (which is useful for getting to the surface slightly quicker after diving).

{| class="wikitable" border="1" width="100%"
Boats move according to the player's control or water currents. Boats move significantly faster than a player can walk on land or water, but are slower than minecarts. If on land, a boat may still be controlled but extremely slowly.

  +
Pressing S while holding F3 will reload all web-loaded client resources.
Boats are controlled by the player's movement keys: they will accelerate slowly in the same direction the player would move if they were not in the boat. Boats also turn to always face in the direction of movement, turning you with them. For example, pressing the forward and right keys, or pressing the forward key while you face slightly to the right, will result in moving in a circle as the boat swings to the right, continuously changing your “push” direction. When moving fast enough, there will be "water spray" visual effect representing the bow wake.

Pressing F while holding F3 will change render distance a.k.a. "fog", from farther to nearer. Before 1.8 this function was assigned to F button.
If you move through an area with only 1 block of air between the water and ceiling, you will take suffocation damage, but can still move anywhere the boat can.

If you enter sneak mode while on a boat, the boat will not break on impact while traveling at high speed. It's also recommended to bring a few spares if you are planning any kind of lengthy boat journey. There is a much smaller chance of a boat breaking when it impacts with wool; making wool a good material for building docks.

Boats are entities. Boats behave much like off-track minecarts; they can be pushed around slowly on solid blocks, are easily pushed around by water currents, and always face the direction they last moved.

Some people are experiencing a bug while exiting from full-screen mode that causes an inescapable black screen. When that's the case, use ALT+TAB to switch out of Minecraft AND switch it back to windowed mode.
If a boat runs into another entity such as a player, another boat, or a mob, it will bounce off and change direction; running into a block will merely stop movement (if the boat does not break).

  +
Also note that this may not respect multiple monitors and Minecraft may occupy all screens instead of the one it is active on.
Boats are fragile; they take damage by being hit or crashing into blocks. After taking enough damage over a short interval, the boat will break, dropping 3 Wooden Planks and 2 Sticks. Since they do not drop boat resources, boats cannot be picked up and reused like minecarts.

Old Keys
If you crash a boat into another boat, the boat being ridden will be destroyed while the other one will just bump away. Boats do not break when running into Soul Sand at water level, because Soul Sand has a lower top surface so that the boat merely runs aground rather than crashing, so it is useful to make docks and harbors out of soul sand.

Doors can be used to control the movement of boats, such as blocking them into docks or preventing them from following a current until the door is opened. This technique is often used to build boat dispensers.

Pressing this key combination would cause Minecraft to either freeze for a while, displaying a strange view of the world or crash, depending on your amount of available RAM. During this time it would attempt to generate a file at least 1 GB in size.
Whilst boats used to float upwards in any type of water, flowing or not, downwards flowing water will now cause them to become stuck on the bottom, making many water-elevator devices useless and risking the player drowning. A water elevator constructed solely of source blocks still works, albeit slower than water elevators before.

Canal
+
Xperia Play
Canals, consisting of a series of trenches dug on land filled with flowing water, are a possible method of transportation across large distances using boats. A canal transportation system is more time-consuming to construct, but more energy-efficient than a rail transportation system. Double doors, ladders, pressure plates, and sugar canes can be used as consecutive locks on the canal to control the direction of the flow of water in a canal to construct a flowing fully horizontal waterway. Locks can also be used for boat lifts between different elevation of water. (For real life examples, see Wikipedia's canal, lock (water transport), and boat lift.)

  +
{| class="wikitable" border="1" width="100%"
It is also possible to construct a canal with still water by strategically placing water in the pattern of a chessboard. This makes for faster transportation, however a longer construction time as more water is needed.

Minecraft uses the standard control scheme of mouse and keyboard controls as input. The game cannot be played using only a mouse or only a keyboard using the default control scheme.

Computer

Default Controls

Mouse Controls Function
Left Button Destroy blocks (Hold down); Attack (Click once); Toggle Switches/Doors (Click once).
Wheel Scroll Scrolls through the quick-bar.
Wheel Click Switch to the block currently looked at, as long as it is in the quickbar
Right Button Place blocks; Fire Bow; Block Sword; Use special blocks like Chests, Doors, and Switches; Enter Vehicles.
Movement Turning; Aiming; Third person camera movement.

Most Minecraft keyboard controls can be configured via the Controls page under Options. The defaults are:

Key Function
W Move forward. When double-tapped, causes the player to sprint (unless in water or Fly Mode is on).
A Strafe left.
S Move backward.
D Strafe right.
Spacebar Jump. When double-tapped, toggles Fly Mode (Creative only). When Fly Mode is on, causes the player to gain altitude (ascend).
Left Shift Sneak. When the inventory is open, Shift + clicking on an item or stack moves it between the inventory and the hotbar. When a chest is open, Shift + clicking on an item will move the entire stack between the chest and the inventory. When a furnace is open, Shift + clicking an item or stack moves it to the inventory (Shift + clicking items or stacks in the inventory does not move them to the furnace). When crafting, Shift + clicking the crafted item automatically crafts the maximum number of that item for the materials being used, and moves all crafted items to the inventory. When double-tapped while walking, causes the player to dash (unless in water or Fly Mode is on). When Fly Mode is on, causes the player to lose altitude (descend).
1-9 Selects the appropriate quick-bar item.
E Open up the Inventory. Before Beta 1.4, this function was bound to "I" by default.
Q Drop a held item.
T Chat (Multiplayer only). Server commands.
Tab Player list (Multiplayer only). Hold the key.
Esc Open up the menu and give back cursor control. Pauses Singleplayer games.

Function Keys

There are some keys that are not changeable via Options that perform special functions within the stand alone client. To make these work for OS X, go to the Apple icon, access System Preferences-->Keyboard and mouse--> And check the use F1, F2 etc. as normal keys, or alternatively hold down the "fn" button above the delete key whilst pressing the desired function key. Key Function
F1 Toggles GUI hiding. This was added in the Halloween Update to make taking scene screenshots easier. (F1 + F2 will take a screenshot without the GUI.)
F2 Simply pressing this key will take a screenshot and place it in %appdata%\.minecraft\screenshots on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/screenshots in OS X, or ~/.minecraft/screenshots in Linux.
F3 Pressing this key will toggle the showing of extra debug information on the top of the screen along side the Minecraft version, such as FPS (frames per second), chunk updates, available memory, and a performance graph. Before version 1.3 F3 had to be held down to show this info.

Pressing S while holding F3 will reload all web-loaded client resources.

Pressing F while holding F3 will change render distance a.k.a. "fog", from farther to nearer. Before 1.8 this function was assigned to F button.

F5 Toggles between first and third person. In 1.9 this will toggle between first person, third person from the back and third person from the front. [1]

Left Alt
Gives cursor control back to Windows and freezes the game until it is clicked. However, the cursor is trapped inside the game's window, making this useless. Holding a movement key then toggling this on then off again will make that key stuck on, even if it is let go. Pressing the same movement key again will stop it.
F11 Toggles full-screen mode in the Windows, OS X, and Linux clients.

Old Keys

Below are the list of keys which are no longer usable in the current version of the game.[2]

Key Function
B Brings up the list of usable blocks in Creative Classic.
Enter Sets Spawn Point in Creative Classic.
R Respawn at spawn point in Creative Classic.
F5 Toggles rain in Creative Classic.

F8 Toggles mouse smoothing before 1.8.
G Used to spawn a Human in Creative.
Y Used to invert mouse in Creative.
F Toggles render distance (fog) before 1.8.
N Used to generate a new map in Creative.
Shift + F2 From Beta 1.2_02 to Beta 1.5, this called an unfinished function that attempted to generate a huge TGA format screenshot.

Pressing this key combination would cause Minecraft to either freeze for a while, displaying a strange view of the world or crash, depending on your amount of available RAM. During this time it would attempt to generate a file at least 1 GB in size.
