Template:Version history/disclaimer

This article is about publicly-released development versions for the PC. For the stable versions' history, see Version history.

Starting in the period between Beta 1.7.3 and Beta 1.8, Mojang began to publicly release testing versions of full updates in order to get major feedback, especially for bug reporting, so that the official update is considerably more stable. While these versions were public, they were not auto-installed by the game and are completely optional.

In Beta, these versions went under the tag of "Pre-Release", candidates subject to release for 1.0 as "RC#", and post-1.0 were given a name under a special syntax (see below).

To install a development version, simply download the minecraft.jar file, place "minecraft.jar" in your .minecraft/bin/ directory and run Minecraft as usual. For GNU/Linux, some extra work needs to be done to get the snapshots going.

Note: This is not a page for reporting bugs; they should be posted on the official bug tracker instead. For more information see the Issues page.

Snapshots & Pre-releases

File:Snapshot.png

Curse client w/Snapshot support

The weekly snapshots are named by using the format YYwWWx. YY is the two-digit year, w simply stands for "week", WW is the two-digit week number within the year, and x is a unique identifier, starting with "a", in case there is more than one release per week.

As of February 6, 2013, players using the Curse client can easily switch between available snapshots.

Hey! This snapshot is a bit late, due to us doing games for charity (to which you still can donate and get to play the games), but you know what they say about the longer you wait… Anyway, we’re still in bug-fixing mode, but getting really close to a Minecraft Redstone Update release now! We intend to get a pre-release out by Thursday, and an official release out next week.

Do you hear that? That kinda squishy, gooey sound? That’s the sound of a bug fix snapshot. We’re starting to wind down from new features and are preparing for a potential (pre-)release of The Redstone Update in a few weeks time. With that in mind, let’s introduce you to Snapshot 13w05a!

  • Improved the scoreboard system
    • Added team mechanics including custom name colors, friendly fire options and objective tracking per team instead of per player
    • Added a new display type - Displays value below nametags
    • Added a new criteria type - health, ranging from 0 to 20

      • The topmost layer of snow does not have collision, so the player is always slightly sunken in the snow
      • Visually, four layers of snow is the same height as a slab. However, five layers of snow has the same collision height as a slab
    • Crafting recipe is 3 snow blocks in a row to create 6 snow layers
      • For each thin layer of snow crafted, the player loses exactly half the snowballs required to produce it
Bug fixes (Official List):

According to our calendar from 2041, it’s Thursday in week 4 and flying cars still haven’t been invented yet. However, we did manage to bring back some cool Minecraft features in the form of a snapshot.

  • Renamed command blocks now use their name instead of @ in the chat
  • Comparators can now be used with jukeboxes
    • Output signal strength relates to disk number
  • Changed bone meal
    • No longer gives instant growth - instead, each use advances one growth stage:
    • Gives off green particles when used
    • Note: Dinnerbone has stated that he still has to balance out this new bonemeal growth system[11]
  • Added a new command feature - scoreboard
    • Not 100% done yet
    • The scoreboard can be used to track deaths, players killing another player, players killing something a mob, or players activating commands
    • The complicated system uses a combination of name, display name, and criteria, and track an integer number of points for players
  • Mobs now show the name given to them, either by anviling on their Spawn Egg or external editors, above their head when the player looks directly at them within a circular 6 block radius
  • Improved double slabs
    • 43:8 will now be the "smooth stone full half-slab block" and will remain so
    • Generally: If the top bit is set, the top texture will be used on all sides, also allowing for smooth sandstone full half-slab blocks (43:9)
  • Improved dispensers
  • Dispensers and droppers can now face all directions
  • In Creative, the player can now hit mobs/players from five blocks away
  • Mobs will not actively path over rails
  • [Warning: Extremely bugged and may crash Minecraft] Held armor can be equipped by right-clicking (fix:Next snapshot)
    • In this particular snapshot, this functionality is very faulty, prone to crashing and incorrect slot usage. Use with caution
Bug fixes (Official List):

    • They now shoot faster when their target is closer
    • They shoot players one block away

  • Powering the hopper now also stops it from taking in items (see comparison between 13w02a and 13w02b[16])
  • Large/double chests can now release a redstone signal when connected to a Comparator depending on the amount of stacks within. Before, double chests would only emit a signal depending on how full each individual chest was (a double chest with only the the top half full would emit a full signal from the side that the items were in).
  • Changed the Activator Rail recipe - the new recipe includes two sticks and a redstone torch, as well as the 6 iron ingots. Dinnerbone stated the previous crafting recipe was not intended.[17]

      • 1 item will give a signal strength of 1, a 1/3 of a stack (21 for items which stack to 64) gives a signal strength of 2
      • The number of full stacks x 3 = Signal strength
      • E.g. 2 stacks of an item/block will give a signal strength of 6, while 2 potions will also give a signal strength of 6 because a potion occupies one stack). 1/3 of a stack

  • Allowed those connected to a player's LAN network to join SP games
    • The player can now use “/publish” to open your single-player game for LAN players to join. This is still very much work in progress, so it lacks some necessary settings such as what game mode players will get, and if they should be able to use cheats or not. • Added the /tp command from multiplayer to singleplayer, allowing teleporting between players.
  • The player can now place Levers on the underside of blocks, upside-down.[119]

12w05a[146] February 2, 2012

  • There were actually two versions of this snapshot, and the original version is no longer available. The second version would technically have been 12w05b, but since it was released so soon after the original 12w05a, jeb decided to simply replace 12w05a, and the version released the next day was named 12w05b.[147] The original 12w05a had a bug where the game would crash when right-clicking a sitting cat empty-handed, and it also had some griefing in the translation. It is for these reasons that the snapshot was updated so soon.

Beta 1.9 Pre-releases

Considered the "Lost Update",[157] a full version under the name "Beta 1.9" never came. Instead, Mojang opted to delay the release of this update until MineCon 2011 and release it under the name "Minecraft 1.0.0". This decision was made after a few development versions tagged as Beta 1.9 were already sent out, so the name Beta 1.9 was kept for all of the development versions in the gap between Beta 1.8.1 and Minecraft 1.0.0, other than the Release Candidates.

Version Date of Addition Additions Summary Download
