Near future

Version Planned changes Planned release date
1.8[1]

1.8

General

  • Difficulty
    • Difficulty can be locked for each world.[2]
      • This is so you do not open a Survival World on peaceful difficulty by accident.
      • Also to avoid temptation to change to an easier difficulty in hairy situations.[3]
  • Adventure Mode
    • Hitboxes of blocks appear in Adventure mode only if the block can be interacted with (chests, levers, etc.).[4]
  • Commands
    • New command /blockdata. It will be able to modify NBT data at a specific coordinate. The <dataTag> will merge with the block at that position.[5]
      • Usage format: /blockdata <x> <y> <z> <dataTag>
    • Capability to detect entities in the same fashion as blocks.[6]

Gameplay

  • Enchanting[7]
    • Has separated XP level requirement , XP level cost and resource cost. For example, an enchantment may have a XP level requirement of 13, so it will only become available for enchanting after reaching 13 levels of experience, but it will only cost 2 XP levels and 2 golden ingots
      • Currently the only (known) resource is gold ingots.
    • Only one randomly chosen enchantment will be displayed in the tooltip.
      • This means that additional enchantments could still be applied, even if they aren't mentioned in the tooltip. For example, if it says "Sharpness" in the tooltip when enchanting a sword, you know the enchantment can't include Smite or Bane of Arthropods, since they are not compatible with each other. However it may still add Knockback or Fire Aspect.
    • Enchantments only cost 1-3 XP levels.
      • Each additional XP level adds a tier of enchantment.
    • The list of possible enchantments is not reset until you enchant an item
      • In multiplayer, the individual player will have to enchant an item in order for his/her own enchantment list to update.
    • Levels are harder to obtain.
  • Anvil
    • Anvils will be re-balanced to meet the new enchanting system.
      • Renaming costs only one level.
      • Repairing costs are "flattened" for all items.

Blocks & Items

  • Door
    • They are stackable up to 64[8]
    • The crafting recipe for doors now gives 3 doors instead of one.[9]
  • Granite
    • A pink-brown stone[10]
    • Comes in two variants: "Raw" and "Smooth"
  • Bouncy Block[11]
    • A "bouncy" block that resembles a slime block. [12]

Other planned features, items, and blocks

Feature Description
Transparent Clouds Jeb originally made clouds transparent when looking from underneath it in snapshot 13w06a.[14] However, this change was reverted in 13w10b as Jeb noticed that the fix caused an FPS drop. He stated "In the future we can fix this again, but with more specific cloud options in the video settings menu."[15]
Construction analysis Jeb mentioned that they hoped to add better systems for analyzing constructions, such as village houses - currently a lone door will be considered a village house.[16]
Cauldron Enhancement Dinnerbone plans to make buckets fillable from cauldrons.[17]
Rendering Engine Rewrite First confirmed for 1.5, but not added yet. The features will require a higher OpenGL feature-set and include some sort of fallback for older hardware. The rewritten engine will allow for much faster overall rendering, resulting in higher FPS. This has partially been added in 1.7[18][19]
Audio loops Audio loops have not yet been added to the game, but may be implemented to play when the player is in a specific location (In caves, forests, oceans, and beside a waterfall). This has been partially added in 1.4 with the addition of lava and water ambient sounds.
Friends List The Minecraft documentary team of 2 Player Productions filmed a Keynote roadmap, containing these lines.[20][21] Kristoffer mentioned on Twitter that he is currently working on friends lists for Scrolls, then for other Mojang games. These will be available for players with Mojang accounts. At MineCon 2012 Jeb stated that it would be a large implementation on the server side and will be used for all Mojang games, and that is a big project. [22] [23]
Video Support The Minecraft documentary team of 2 Player Productions filmed a Keynote roadmap, containing these lines.[20] It has also been mentioned at various points that a program for making videos will be implemented into Minecraft itself. Minecraft versions 1.7.3 and higher now have built in Twitch support for OS X 10.7 and higher as well as Windows Vista and higher.
Rewriting the Skin System Dinnerbone displayed interest towards looking into switching the skin system to edit right and left player limbs separately, once they're done rewriting the "rendering stuffs".[24]
More Interesting Villagers Jeb mentioned during a Q&A at Minecon 2012 that he would like to expand upon the complexity of Villagers eventually.[25]
More Animals Jon Kagstrom commented on Reddit that he would like to add more animals, such as fish, birds, and tree animals, to make the game seem more alive.[26] Dinnerbone said would like to add pandas,[27] but there are no current plans to add more mobs.[28]
Workbench (Mod/Plugin API)[29]
Main article: Plugin API
Seasons Dinnerbone mentioned on Twitter that he was experimenting with adding seasons, and varying the length of day and night according to season. He also mentioned it during MineCon 2013. [30][31] Seasons may include changes in color of tree leaves and may also be tied to real time.[32][33]
Account System Update[34] This will include the ability to change your Minecraft username and have multiple copies of Minecraft per account. Bans will be changed to use a new Player ID system.
Removing Enchantments Dinnerbone stated that there will be a way to remove enchantments from items.[35]
Beets Ryan Holtz said he wants to add Beets to PC as they are in the Pocket Edition version 0.8.0. Jeb also stated he is testing the texture for them in the PC version. [36] [37]
More Ores Dinnerbone said in a Reddit AMA that they planned on adding more ores[38]
More types of caves Dinnerbone said in a Reddit AMA that they planned on adding more types of caves[38]
Easier way to implant terrain changes Dinnerbone said in a Reddit AMA that he planned on making a easier way to implant terrain changes[39]
More structures in biomes Dinnerbone said in a Reddit AMA that he will look into more structures in biomes[39]
