Java Edition history of textures/Items

This article is about all changes made to item textures. For the texture atlas that housed all block textures prior to Java Edition 1.5 and Pocket Edition v0.8.0 alpha, see items.png.

This page attempts to document the full history of the textures of items, their additions, changes and removals. This page only documents items which have specific item textures (such as cauldrons and hoppers) - items which use 3D models of the block they represent, as well as items which are the 2D texture of the block in question, are not documented here but rather at Java Edition history of textures/Blocks.

0.31		20091231-2			Added the textures for leather, studded, chainmail, and iron armor, apple, iron shovel, iron sword and quiver. All of these textures except the shovel are taken from one of Notch's previous games, Legend of the Chambered 2.
		20100110			Added the textures for flint and steel, iron axe and iron pickaxe.
		20100122			Added the texture for arrows.
					The texture for the iron axe has changed, and bows actually implemented with a changed texture from their prior unused version.
		20100128			Added the textures for wooden, stone and diamond swords, axes, pickaxes and shovels, and coal, diamonds, gold ingots and iron Ingots.
					The texture for iron axes has been changed.
		20100129			Added the texture for sticks.
					The textures for flint and steel, gold ingots, and iron ingots were changed.
		20100130			Added the textures for golden swords, axes, pickaxes, shovels, bowls, mushroom stews, gunpowder, strings and feathers.
20100206					Added the textures for hoes, golden and diamond armor, bread, seeds, and wheat.
					Changed the textures for feathers, golden tools, and apples.
					Removed studded armor textures.
20100219					Added flint, raw porkchop and cooked Porkchop.
					The textures for coal, and flint and steel have been changed.
20100223					Added paintings.

					Clocks combine with this texture to generate sprites.

		1.5			Clocks and Compasses now use the new animation feature included in texture packs. As a result, they are considerably less precise, having only 64 frames and 29 frames each.

		13w16b			Added the texture for name tags.
		13w18a			The texture for horse saddles has been removed.
