Java Edition hardware performance/nav
Instructions
Hardware requirements
Please see hardware requirements for more information.
Software requirements
- Windows XP or later, OS X or later, Linux with latest software updates
- Windows users: Run Windows Update to install the latest updates from Microsoft
- OS X users: Run Software Update from System Preferences to install the latest updates from Apple.
- Linux users: In a Terminal, type in the command "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade" to install latest updates from your respective repositories.
- Java SE 7
- Using the most up-to-date version of Java 7 is preferred.
- If you are on a 64-bit system, it is highly recommended that you install the 64-bit version of Java (you can install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions with no problems if other programs need the 32-bit version).
- Latest version of the new Minecraft launcher
- The new launcher updates itself automatically each start-up, if you have an available internet connection (You may need to open your launcher twice for the new versions to take effect.)
- To update the launcher manually, download it here
- Minecraft 1.6.1 or newer, is preferred.
- Older versions will need to be updated to current versions. Previous versions in entries will not be approved.
Computer specifications
To obtain your system information, you may wish to use the following programs:
- Windows users: AIDA64, CPU-Z, GPU-Z, or Piriform Speccy
- GNU/Linux users: lshw or sysctl
- OS X users: System Information/Profiler
- os: Operating System (Mac, Windows, GNU/Linux), version/distribution, and architecture (32-bit or 64-bit)
- Examples: Windows 8 64-bit, Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit, OS X 10.8
- cpu: CPU Brand (AMD/Intel), CPU name, Clock speed (in GHz)
- Examples: AMD FX-4100 3.6GHz, Intel Core i5-3380M 2.9GHz
- gpu: GPU Brand (AMD/Nvidia/Intel), GPU name, Clock speed (in MHz/GHz), VRAM amount (in MB), (G)DDR type
- Examples: AMD Radeon HD 6990 1.2GHz 4096MB GDDR5, Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti 823MHz 2048MB GDDR5, Intel HD Graphics 3000 650MHz
- ram: RAM amount (in GB), RAM type (DDR, DDR2, DDR3), Frequency (in MHz)
- Examples: 4GB DDR2, 8GB DDR3
- drive: Storage device type Minecraft is installed on, as in HDD, SSHD or SSD (if using RAID, please specify it); do not include drive letter, other data drives, or amount of storage
- Examples: Intel 520 SSD, Western Digital Caviar Green HDD 5400 rpm
- resolution: Monitor resolution (if using a 16 bit color depth, state it in the comments)
- Examples: 1680×1050, 1920×1080
- launcher: Launcher version (number only)
- Example: 1.1.3
- version: Minecraft version (number only)
- Example:
- fps_window/fps_full: FPS in windowed mode is required. FPS in fullscreen (F11 for Windows, FN+F11 for Mac) is requested.
- Examples: 60, 50-70
- comments: Please keep comments under 15 words.
- GNU/Linux users should include the version of Java used (OpenJDK or Sun/Oracle).
- You may wish to include the manufacturer and model of your computer, if applicable.
Conditions for testing
To contribute to this list, use the following settings:
- Other notes
- Use the default Resource pack
- Use the downloadable client
- NO MODS (especially OptiFine)
- If you want, you can install OptiFine after the initial test and make a note of your FPS in your comment section. This is not required.
- Do not use Magic Launcher; the default Minecraft launcher must be used.
- These settings are the default settings when Minecraft is first installed, with the exception of Performance, Server Textures, and Use VSync.
- Performance set at Max FPS allows the game to do its best in delivering smooth play, along with Use VSync off allowing FPS to run as high as it can. Server Textures really has no effect when in a singleplayer world. This is essentially a small reminder to use default textures during the test.
Launcher setup
- Choose New Profile, and use the settings that are provided below:
- Profile Name: "Hardware Performance Test"
- Enable experimental development versions ("snapshots"): Keep disabled unless you plan on benchmarking a snapshot
- Use version: "release ", or the latest snapshot
- Resolution: "854"×"480"
- Java Settings (Advanced)
- Executable: Leave this alone
- JVM Arguments: Do not enable this option or add any arguments
In-game setup
- Create New World
- World Name: "Hardware Performance Test" (Without quotes)
- Game Mode: Survival, Creative if you don't want hostile mobs to bother you (Please don't use commands or fly if you choose Creative).
- More World Options
- Seed for the World Generator: "Hardware Performance Test" (Without quotes)
- Generate Structures: ON
- World Type: Default
- Allow Cheats: OFF
- Bonus Chest: OFF
- Once in the Test world...
- Press F3 to bring up the debug screen. Your FPS will be on the first line on the top left next to the game version.
- For the most accurate frame rate results, allow all chunks to load until the chunk updates value drops to a consistent 0-5.
- This may take a while depending on the performance on your machine.
- To gather FPS results:
- First stand at coordinates (x:172), (z:86). This is a central location for players to start. (Coordinates can be found on the mid-left position on the debug screen.)
- Players retrieving frame rates closer to the lake will have higher FPS results as opposed to those who are by or inside the tree line, creating unfair results.
- Look around in all horizontal directions. Do not look straight up or down while obtaining the framerate.
- Looking down causes any underground entities to hurt your average FPS while looking up inflates it, ruining a standard test either way.
- When retrieving your average frame rate, walk around in a small circle (about 20 blocks in all directions - counting from the center of a circle).
- Get an average frame rate for the default window and in fullscreen. To change to fullscreen, press F11 (Mac OS X FN + F11).
- First stand at coordinates (x:172), (z:86). This is a central location for players to start. (Coordinates can be found on the mid-left position on the debug screen.)
