This guide is a simplified overview of all the changes in the Village & Pillage update (Java Edition 1.14.x releases), which assumes at least some familiarity with Update Aquatic (Java Edition 1.13.x releases).

  • Foxes can spawn in taiga and snowy taiga biomes.
  • Foxes can also spawn in taiga villages in groups of 1–3.

  • Foxes will eat any food-item, and can pick up any item in their mouth.
  • Foxes sleep during the day and are active at night.

  • Pandas will eat bamboo, but can only be bred if there is at least eight bamboo blocks within five blocks of each panda.

Pillager

  • Pillagers spawn as part of illager patrols, which consist of a maximum of five pillagers. Illager patrols can spawn in any biome except mushroom fields and its variants.
  • They can only spawn in below light level 8, only at night, like monsters. [verify]
  • Pillagers spawn around pillager outposts.
  • Pillagers spawn as part of raids.
  • Crossbow (0–1)
  • 5, plus 1–3 per equipment piece (when killed by a player or tamed wolf)
Ravager

  • Ravagers have a chance to spawn as part of raids.
  • The ravager will destroy leaves and all crops it comes in contact with, except for melon and pumpkin stems.

  • Trader llamas are hostile toward all zombie variants, and illagers. They will also become hostile toward mobs and players that attack the wandering trader they are leashed to.

  • Wandering traders randomly spawn in the world with two trader llamas.
  • Only one wandering trader will exist in the world at any given time, new wandering traders will not spawn until an existing wandering trader despawns.
  • At the night (or when light level is 7 and below) wandering traders drink potion of invisibility. When light level is above 7, they drink bucket of milk and cancel any effects they have.

  • Villagers now have biome specific skins.
    • Villager skins now reflect their unique profession.
    • Villagers can now change their profession at will. (according to which job site block is nearby)
      • Once a villager has leveled up, it cannot change their profession.
    • Villagers now have a new profession, the mason.
  • Villager trading has been overhauled.
    • Villagers now have levels and require experience to unlock the next tier of trades; level 1 is novice, level 2 is apprentice, level 3 is journeyman, level 4 is expert, and level 5 is master.
    • Villagers cannot restock trades instantly anymore, however, they can restock up to two times per day at their job site block.
    • They can now increase/decrease their trade prices.
    • Villagers will hold items in their hands to the player when the player holds an item which the villager has a trade offer for.
  • Villagers now will sleep in beds at night.
  • Villagers now have schedules. Their schedule includes working, gathering, as well as sleeping in beds at night.
  • Villagers now gossip at meeting points during their schedule. There are six types of gossip: major_negative, minor_negative, major_positive, minor_positive, trading, and golem, each gossip will have an effect on the village, such as spawning in an iron golem in the village center, or increasing/lowering trade prices for the player.
  • When bells are rung or when a raid is happening, villagers will retreat into their houses.
    • Villagers will ring bells during raids themselves to alert other villagers.
    • Villagers will sweat during raids.
    • When a raid is successfully cleared, villagers will celebrate by setting off firework rockets, and cheering.
  • When a player has the Hero of the Village effect applied, villagers will gift the player various different items, as well as decrease their trade prices.

  • Vindicators now spawn as part of raids.
  • Vindicators which spawn with an ominous banner on their head are known as raid captains. When a player kills a raid captain, the player will receive the Bad Omen effect.

  • Sweet berry bushes can be found naturally in all taiga variants.
  • Sweet berry bushes can be planted with sweet berries.

  • Sweet berry bushes drop sweet berries by using or when broken, dropping 1-2 berries at age three, and 2-3 berries at age four.
  • Sweet berry bushes slow players while standing in them at age one, as well as deal damage to players while moving at age two and above. Standing still while in sweet berry bushes will deal no damage.

  • Barrels are a storage block similar to chests, with twenty-seven inventory spaces.
  • The main difference between barrels and chests is that barrels can be opened from any side, regardless of orientation or whether there's a solid block on top.
  • Unemployed villagers will take on the fisherman profession when near a barrel that hasn't been taken by another.

  • The effect is hidden after suspicious stew is crafted, making it impossible to tell ones with negative effect from ones with positive effects.

Sweet berries can be harvested from sweet berry bushes. Additionally sweet berries can be found in taiga village house chests.
  • Sweet berries give 2 (🍗) hunger points when eaten.
  • Sweet berries can be used on grass blocks, dirt, podzol, coarse dirt, and farmland to plant a sweet berry bush sapling.
  • Used to breed foxes.

Bamboo Jungle
Bamboo Jungles generate in large patches within regular jungles. Trees are much less dense in this variant than in the main jungle, comparable to the jungle edge, but boasts countless amounts of bamboo across its landscape. Podzol generates on the jungle floor in this biome. It is home to all jungle mobs, including pandas, which are exclusive to this biome.

The bamboo jungle hills biome is similar to the bamboo jungle, though with steeper terrain just like the regular jungle hills variant. Large amounts of bamboo cover the landscape, and patches of podzol replace grass blocks.

Raid A raid is triggered when a player with the Bad Omen effect enters a village.

During a raid a combination of pillagers, vindicators, evokers, witches, and ravagers, the combination being dependant on the level of the bad omen effect, will spawn around a village. A boss bar at the top of the screen will show the number of raid enemies still alive within the village.

  • If the player enters a village while having the Bad Omen effect a raid will be triggered.

  • If the player kills all of the illagers during the raid, the player will receive the Hero of the Village effect. This effect lasts for 2 in-game days.

  • The structure contains one chest at the very top.
The pillager outpost can have a combination of smaller structures surrounding it, these structures include a cage, targets, logs, and a tent.
Snowy Villages

Snowy villages can generate in snowy tundra biomes.
  • Many different buildings can contain chests which will have various loot based on the snowy tundra.
The snowy village is a variant of the village, designed specifically for snowy tundra biomes. It is the only place where lanterns can naturally generate. The structures are made up of various spruce wood and stripped logs. Some buildings resemble igloos and are constructed from either snow, ice or blue ice.
