Mobs

New

1.13 adds several new mobs to the game, here is a list of the mobs to look out for:

Name Image Habitat Drops Notes
Dolphin
Dolphin
All oceans except for Frozen oceans
  • Like Wolves the dolphin will attack any player that attacks first.
  • When fed raw cod dolphins will guide the player to the nearest ocean ruin or shipwreck.
  • Players receive the Dolphin's Grace effect when near dolphins, the effect allows players to swim significantly faster underwater.
Turtle
Turtle
Any beaches except for cold beaches
  • Turtles can be bred with Seagrass, one turtle will then travel back to it's home beach to lay it's eggs, regardless of the distance.
  • Baby turtles will drop one Scute when they grow into an adult.
Fish
  • Cod – cold, warm, and lukewarm oceans, including deep varients.
  • Salmon – Cold and frozen oceans, and normal and frozen rivers.
  • Tropical fish and Pufferfish – Lukewarm and warm oceans.
Each type drops one fish item of the same type as itself. All tropical fish variants drop the same tropical fish item.
  • Fish will group together with other fish of the same type, forming small schools.
  • All fish types can be captured with a bucket of water. Tropical fish will retain there type when captured and placed again.
Drowned
Drowned
Drowned spawn in all bodies of water. Additionally, groups of Drowned will spawn in ocean ruins when the structures are first generated.

Spawned Equipment

Phantom
Phantom
Phantoms spawn at night and during thunderstorms high above players who are below sea level, have no obstructions above them, and have not slept for at least three ingame days
  • Phantoms are the fastest mob in the overworld, players are unable to outrun them. A good strategy is to obstruct their path to you, since they fly up if they collide with any block during an attack.
  • Phantoms will not spawn if the player has a solid block above them, meaning they will not spawn around players underground or within enclosed structures. Additionally, they will not spawn if the player is below sea level.

Biomes

Changed

In 1.13 nearly all the biomes are being renamed, here is a list of the new biome names versus the old names, note that the debug screen will no longer show the biome name but will rather show the internal biome id:

For more information see the World Generation section in the 1.13 article.

New

Name Internal id Image Description Structures
Frozen Ocean minecraft:frozen_ocean
Frozen
A partially frozen area of ocean, with large, yet broken up, sheets of ice covering the water. This variant of ocean has a gravel seabed and is home to Kelp, Seagrass, Squid, Salmon, Stray, and Polar Bears.
Lukewarm Ocean minecraft:lukewarm_ocean
Lukewarm Ocean
This ocean variant can be recognized by its light teal water and sandy seabed. It is home to Kelp, Seagrass, Pufferfish, Dolphins, Tropical fish, and Cod.

Water

The physics for water has also been changed in 1.13, and the way the player interacts with water has also changed.

Swimming

There is now an actual swimming animation used by the player while underwater, this can be activated by sprinting underwater, this also allows the player to move in any direction they are looking including down. Player that cannot sprint, i.e. are to hungry to sprint, cannot swim. Crouching underwater also allows you to descend at a faster rate.

While swimming players can go through one block gaps similar to when using an elytra.

Item and Experience

Items and experience orbs now float to the surface of water rather than sink, this make dying underwater easier to deal with since all of your items will be waiting for you at the surface. This also allows for easy vertical item transportation.

Bubble Columns

For more detailed information see Bubble Columns.

Magma and Soul Sand now make bubble columns when placed underwater. Magma will naturally generate in ocean ruins and where underwater ravines meet lava, while soul sand does not currently generate naturally in oceans. Players are able to breath while in bubble columns.

Magma will pull things down to the bottom, this includes items, players, mobs, and boats. Soul sand will push all entities to the surface at a very fast rate.

Breath

The breath meter no longer instantly refills when entering air, this means it is no longer possible to refill the air meter with a torch while underwater.

Vision

Water has been given unique colors depending on the biome you are in.

Water is also now clearer, and the longer you are underwater the clearer it becomes.
