This guide is a simplified overview of all the changes in the Adventure Update (Java Edition Beta 1.8.x - 1.0.x releases), which assumes at least some familiarity with Beta 1.7.x releases.

Mobs

Cave Spider		Mineshafts	String (0–2) 5 (when killed by a player or tamed wolf)	There are spawners in mineshafts. Can poison players. Smaller than normal spiders, letting them fit through 1-block wide spaces.
Silverfish		Strongholds	5 (when killed by a player or tamed wolf)	There are spawners in strongholds. Spawn when an infested block is broken.
Enderman		Dark environments in The Overworld The End	Ender Pearl (0–1) 5 (when killed by a player or tamed wolf)	If a player "stares" at it, it will attack the player. Have the ability to teleport, and will periodically do so while attacking. Will teleport away from projectiles and sunlight. is harmed when in contact with water.

Nether Bricks		Generates in nether fortresses.	Pickaxe	Building material
Nether Brick Stairs		Generates in nether fortresses.	Pickaxe	Can be used as a building block.
Nether Brick Fence		Generates in nether fortresses.	Pickaxe	Functions the same as normal fences.
Nether Wart Crops		Can be found growing inside special rooms in nether fortresses.	Any tool	An essential ingredient in potions
End Portal Frame		Found in stronghold portal rooms.	Indestructible	Putting an eye of ender into each portal frame block activates the end portal.
End Portal (block)		Created when an end portal is activated.	Indestructible	Entities and players that touch this block are teleported to the end.
End Stone		Generates in the end.	Pickaxe	One of the few materials not destroyed by the ender dragon.
Dragon Egg		Obtained from defeating the ender dragon.	Any tool	The rarest item in the game, only one will naturally exist per world.

Melon Slice		Obtained by breaking Melons.	Restores 2 () and 1.2 saturation. Used to craft glistering melons.
Melon Seeds		Ingredients Crafting recipe Melon Slice 4 Found in mineshaft chests.	Melon seeds are used to grow melons.
Pumpkin Seeds		Ingredients Crafting recipe Pumpkin 4 Found in mineshaft chests.	Pumpkin seeds are used to grow pumpkins.
Ender Pearl		Obtained by killing Endermen.	When thrown, will teleport the player wherever it lands. Used to craft the Eye of Ender.
Eye of Ender		Ingredients Crafting recipe Blaze Powder + Ender Pearl	When thrown, flies in the direction of the stronghold. Used to activate the End Portal.
Blaze Rod		Obtained by killing Blazes.	Used to craft brewing stands. Used to craft blaze powder.

Biomes

An entirely new terrain generator has been added, containing numerous new Biomes:

Gameplay

New

Name	Description
Creative Mode	A new gamemode in which the player can fly, cannot take damage, can break any block instantly, and has an inventory containing an infinite supply of most blocks and items.
Flying	A new ability available in creative mode, activated by double-tapping the jump key.
Sprinting	Double-tapping the forward key allows you to move faster at the cost of losing hunger.
Hunger	Food no longer instantly heals, but instead fills up a hunger bar. Sprinting and regenerating health drains hunger.
Experience	Killing mobs gives you experience points which can be used in enchanting.
Enchanting	Using an enchanting table you can spend experience points to apply enchantments to items.
Brewing	Using a brewing stand you can brew ingredients into water bottles to create potions.
