1.14, the first release of the Update Aquatic,[2] is an upcoming major update which is coming to Minecraft in spring 2018.[1] It will focus on making the ocean livelier.[3]

Mobs

  • Spawns at high altitudes, and swoops down in groups of around 3 or 4 to attack players that have not slept in a long time.[1]
    • The player must be above sea level
Dolphins[1][8]
  • Will often jump out of the water and land back in
  • Will lead players to sunken treasures[1]
Fish[1][6]
  • Come in several different colors and/or types
  • Can be picked up in a bucket and placed back down. When this is performed on the fish, it will no longer be able to despawn.
Turtles[9]
  • Water mobs which will make nests on shorelines throughout various biomes.
  • They will have a baby variant, which will move into water when born.

Planned changes

General

  • Water will be able to flow through semi-transparent blocks such as fences and slabs.[1]
    • Items placed in flowing water will move through semi-transparent blocks the water flows through.[1]
  • Items in water will float upwards.[1]

Blocks

  • Magma blocks placed under water will produce bubble columns that reduce the water's buoyancy.[1]
    • Magma blocks will spawn in ocean ravines.[4]
    • The bubble columns will make the player's boat shake when the player sails near it until the player sinks with the boat.[1]
    • These will make items that are in the water sink too.[1]
    • The player will be able to breathe while in the bubble columns.[4]
