1.14, the first release of the Update Aquatic,[2] is an upcoming major update with a set release date of between April and June 2018.[1] It will focus on making the ocean more lively.[3]

Planned additions

Blocks

Coral[1][4]
  • Available as block, slab and plant[1][4]
  • 5 colors have been shown
  • Textures will be replaced
Kelp[3][4]
  • Grows up from the bottom of the water in tall pillars[4]

Items

  • Tridents[1]
    • Can be thrown at enemies[3]
    • Can be enchanted with new enchantments Loyalty, Impaler, and Slipstream Dash[3]

Mobs

"The Monster of the Night Skies" (Mob B)[3][5]
  • Was voted in by watchers of MineCon Earth[1]
  • Spawns at high altitudes, and swoops down in groups of around 3 or 4 to attack players that have not slept in a long time.[1]
    • The player must be above sea level
Dolphins[1][6]
  • Will often jump out of the water and land back in
  • Will lead players to sunken treasures[1]
Fish[1][4]
  • Come in several different colors and/or types
  • Can be picked up in a bucket and placed back down. When this is performed on the fish, it will no longer be able to despawn.

Generated structure

Shipwrecks[1]
  • Will contain loot chests[7]
Icebergs[1]

Biomes

  • Addition of more ocean variants, including warm and cold versions.

Enchantments
  • Loyalty[3]
    • Can be applied to tridents.[3]

Planned changes

General

  • Water will be able to flow through semi-transparent blocks such as fences and slabs[1]
  • Items in water will float upwards[1]
  • Magma blocks placed under water will produce bubble columns that reduce the water's buoyancy[1]
    • Spawns in ocean ravines[7]
    • These will make the player's boat shake when the player sails near it until the player sinks with the boat[1]
    • These will make items that are in the water sink too[1]
    • The player will be able to breathe while in the bubble columns[7]
