A lit Jack-O-Lantern underwater

Jack-O-Lanterns are a new feature implemented in the Halloween Update on October 31st 2010. It can be created by combining a pumpkin and a torch. They are intended as a purely decorative addition although they can also be used as a light source. Their luminance is somewhat greater than that of the torch. They appear identical to unlit pumpkins in the inventory. Jack-O-Lanterns and pumpkins are some of the many blocks that are broken more quickly with a sword, but will have double damage on the sword.

As with the pumpkin, a Jack-O-Lantern can only be placed if there is another block below it. However, it will remain in place if you remove the block below it after placing it. Jack-O-Lanterns produce the same amount of light and share the same ability to stay lit underwater as glowstone, making them more effective and reliable than torches.

Jack-O-Lanterns have the same icon in the inventory as pumpkins, making it impossible to tell which is which just by looking at them. Since the beta release it is possible to show the type by hovering your mouse over the item in question. Also it isn't possible to stack Jack-O-Lanterns with pumpkins.
