Jack-o'-lanterns: great looks, super powers.

Alex Wiltshire[1]

A jack o'lantern is a solid block that provides light.

Obtaining

Jack o'lanterns can be mined with any tool, or without a tool, but axes are the quickest.

Block Jack o'Lantern
Hardness 1
Tool
Breaking time[A]
Default 1.5
Wooden 0.75
Stone 0.4
Iron 0.25
Diamond 0.2
Netherite 0.2
Golden 0.15
Sword 1
  1. Times are for unenchanted tools as wielded by players with no status effects, measured in seconds. For more information, see Breaking § Speed.

A jack o'lantern will also be removed and drop itself as an item if a piston tries to push it (trying to pull it does nothing) or moves a block into its space.

Mobs

Zombies, skeletons, wither skeletons, and zombie pigmen have a chance of wearing a jack o'lantern if they spawn during Halloween. If a mob wearing a jack o'lantern is killed using a tool enchanted with Looting, there will be a chance equivalent to the level of Looting used to drop the jack o'lantern, up to a maximum of a 3% chance of a drop.

Usage

Light source

File:2011-12-21 18.08.44.png

Jack o'lanterns can be used as light sources underwater.

Jack o'lanterns have a luminance of 15 and the ability to provide light while submerged under water. Like most light sources, they will melt snow and ice.

Building golems

Jack o'lanterns can be used to build snow golems and iron golems as shown below. Snow golems require snow blocks for their bodies, while iron golems require iron blocks. The jack o'lantern must be placed last or the golem will not spawn.

This only work in the Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. In the Legacy Console Edition, a pumpkin must be placed as head.[verify]

Placement

Jack o'lanterns cannot be placed without a block under them, but once placed, will remain even if the block underneath is mined away. When placed, jack o'lanterns automatically face the player. Jack o'lanterns cannot be placed on a transparent block.

Jack o'lanterns are transparent in their rendering only, which means that they have the attributes that all opaque solid blocks have. For example, they can suffocate mobs, and blocks attached to another block (such as torches and rails) can be placed on top of them or on their sides.

Enchantments

Jack o'lanterns can receive the following enchantments, but only through an anvil.

Data values

Jack o'lanterns have the ID name minecraft:lit_pumpkin, and a data value of 91.

History

alpha
1.2.0Added jack o'lanterns.
1.2.0_02All Jack o'lanterns on worlds were converted back into pumpkins in name only.
beta
1.1_02Jack o'lanterns are labeled pumpkins when moused over in the inventory screen.
1.2Jack o'lanterns previously had the same icon and name in the inventory as pumpkins, making it impossible to tell which is which just by looking at them. However, it wasn't possible to stack jack o'lanterns with pumpkins.
1.5_01Jack o'lanterns that already exist in-game now all appear facing the opposite way they were placed before the update. Placing a Jack o'lantern will also have it placed facing away from you, as opposed to facing in your direction, as was the case before the update.
1.8With the introduction of pumpkin farming, jack o'lanterns are now a renewable resource, because the player can make their torches from charcoal.
release
1.2.112w08aIron golems can now be made by using Jack o'Lanterns.
1.4.212w39bPreviously, Jack o'Lanterns lit up blocks all around them evenly. This snapshot changed the light values that Jack o'lanterns emitted, similar to how furnaces were changed in 12w39a.[2] (images showing difference) The light value of Jack o'lantern blocks as seen from their front and bottom surfaces remained 15, but the light value as seen from the top, both sides, and back was changed to 13.
12w40aThe previous change was reverted until the new lighting system could be optimized.
1.6.113w26aRenamed Jack 'o' Lantern to Jack o'Lantern.
1.814w26cJack o'lanterns can no longer be used to build golems.
1.8.11.8.1-pre1Jack o'lanterns can be used to build golems again.
Pocket Edition Alpha

0.9.0build 1Smooth lighting removed from jack o'lanterns.
0.12.1build 1Jack o'lanterns can now spawn golems.
