Glass Panes are transparent blocks which can be used as an alternative to Glass. Glass panes were released in 1.8. Prior to 1.9 Prerelease 2 when destroyed you could pick it up again.[1] Their placement behavior is similar to Redstone, Iron Bars, and Fences. They have the same texture as Glass. They cannot currently be placed horizontally. Glass panes are present in buildings of villages. When placed without anything on the sides of it it will appear in the shape of a ┼ but when something is placed on the sides of it it will become flat or into an ┌ shape or a ┬ shape depending on the items surrounding it.

Using glass panes in the place of Glass Blocks is more ideal because:

  • The pane can be picked up after it has been broken. Note: (Fixed in 1.9 Prerelease 2)
  • Only 6 glass blocks are required to make 16 glass panes, meaning a 166% increase in materials.
  • Because of its shape can be used to displace water and players/mobs can stand inside it.
  • Appears somewhat brighter than glass blocks.

Crafting

Glass Panes can be crafted by placing 6 Glass blocks in a 2x3 horizontal rectangle.

Trivia

  • A 2x2 area made of glass panes can make a hole big enough for the player to fit through in the middle, but not rain, water, etc. this can be used as an easy entrance for an underwater house, but not an exit. Iron Bars work in the same manner.
  • Be careful where you plant Saplings, when a tree grows if a Glass Pane is in the way it will be removed.
  • Glass Panes are much brighter than Glass Blocks, thus making them more suitable than Glass Blocks for high-visibility structures.
  • If two glass panes are placed with one empty space in between, a Spider (which is 2 blocks wide) can still fit through.
  • Before 1.9 Pre-release 2, glass panes were able to be picked up when broken.
