Ultradude, I think the template for Android needs to be removed from the Camera page, and a Pocket template using an image of a mobile device should be made to replace the android template on that page? Because the Camera texture is in the iOS version too.

Image permission

Hi Ultradude. I'd like to know if I can use your gold ore + iron pickaxe images for a T-shirt suggestion I'll be sending to ThinkGeek. Since this would indeed be commercial (for them at least) I'd like to have your permission first.

Glader 14:07, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

While you do indeed need Ultradude's permission to use his render of the Gold ore block, you actually need to get Mojang's permission for reuse of the Gold ore and Gold pickax textures. As I recall, Carl is the one you talk to for stuff like that; he can be reached at carl [at] mojang [dot] com. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:08, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Alright! I've sent an email to Mojang asking their permission as well, thanks for telling me. Still waiting for you to reply though, Ultradude25 =) Glader 06:30, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
I didn't feel I needed to, Dino got it spot on, and I misread it at first and thought you just wanted the flat sprite images.
For the flat sprites, you can just take the images from the game files and up-scale them yourself, the renders however I'd first like more information on what you're using them for, and you'd also probably want higher res versions. I believe I can render up to 1000x1000px with anti-aliasing and 10,000x10,000px without. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 07:00, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm logged on to the IRC channel under the name Glader since I'd rather discuss the details of the design in private (don't want my idea to get ninja'd).
It seems ThinkGeek don't accept design submissions from anyone outside of the U.S, but I'm talking with Mojang instead. Hopefully they'll want to print it. Anyway, drop me a line in IRC when you can and we'll talk. Glader 14:54, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Just got a reply from Mojang. Apparently their graphics team at Jinxed already have something similar in the works so it seems I won't be needing higher res versions after all :( Thanks anyway though. Glader 17:08, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Alright, good to know. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 15:51, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Block Renders

Can you like make a video of how you render blocks? I am really curious to know how :D Cool12309(T|C) 16:49, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

I really don't have time to make a video any time soon, go watch some blender tutorials on uvmaps. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 22:17, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
well, you could upload the file you use as template (i bet you have a file with a set camera and lighting, where you just need to slap the textures on and save the render) – Flying sheep 14:07, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm already planning on doing that, but the fact that he's asking suggests he has no idea how to use blender, meaning he'd still need a tutorial on how to use the files. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 19:31, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm quite familiar with Blender, and would love to get a copy of your .blend file such that I can render out some custom blocks for a few mods on other wikis to match the "main" ones here. Might you post here or on BlendSwap? --MidnightLightning 14:36, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Rendering GIF isometric blocks to APNG?

Most of new browsers supports APNG format, though not sure does it work in wiki uploader though. Are you able to do render those animation blocks in APNG format if possible? Pros would be just better anti-aliasing and transparency and lossless format. Cons would be bigger size, and not completely supported by old browsers. (Though, what about SVG format additionally?) Tom.K 18:13, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Actually Firefox and Opera (and two others that I've never heard of, and are probably not mainstream browsers) are the only browsers that supports APNG. Chrome can support APNG with an addon, but we can't really expect everyone to have that installed. There's really no benefit to the wiki to use APNG over GIF, as the images are always used on a white background, so the anti-aliasing looks identical to PNG. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 22:49, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Undoing previous revisions

I've seen you (or some people) revert versions of pages that are not the latest (e.g. someone makes an edit (A), another makes another edit (B), and someone reverts A while keeping B), and I can't do that "due to conflicting intermediate revisions". Cool12309(T|C) 23:40, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

You can only do that if B doesn't edit anything that A does (thus the conflicting revisions). You can also go into view history, go to a revision and hit edit, then save the page. That'll take the page back to how it was when after that revision was made, which is good for when someone does some spam, but you either don't have access to rollback, or someone else has edited since, so rollback wouldn't work. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:07, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
More generally, undoing old revisions only works if none of the more recent edits change the same section(s) of the page that the old edit changes (so, for instance, if a page doesn't have any sections - even if it's a very long page, and the newer edits don't come close to touching the old edit - you won't be able to undo any old edits with the "Undo" link). If you have the time to do so, and the undo link won't work because of this, it's generally better to manually undo the edit than just roll back the whole page to a revision prior to it. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:18, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

invimage in Block

Do you know why the invimage in the Block infobox are 1px too low? I tried editing the span top value, it works on my test page, but not on the real template… – Scaler (t) 19:56, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

It appears to be a bug the way the page renders certain elements, the list item in particular (I don't know if you've noticed, but the alignment for text gets thrown out 1px by list items as well, but you'd never notice it unless you saw a side-by-side comparison). First I thought it was to do with >1 em values, but after changing it to 1px it's still being pushed off. On some pages the invimage will look correct until you edit the page, and on others it's the opposite way. It appears Chrome is the only one not affected, and is actually displaying it correctly (which ends up 1px too high because you changed the values). It seems the original method of div tables was stopping this happen (I guess it isolates it?), but this brings me back to the original problem. Since these are meant to be a replacment for normal images, they need to act like them, and be able to be included anywhere and an image would be able to. But if you're using div, div tables or normal tables then you can't have anything next to it without using float, which is rather messy and often doesn't seem to work properly and the text aligns to the top of the "image", instead of the centre. It seems it has to be within the div to actually listen to the vertical-alignment style.
I really don't know what to do about it. I thought I'd come up with a brilliant solution using span instead of div, but it seems it just fixed one problem and introduced another one, that's much less predictable. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 21:44, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Disagreement about Development versions in VH

Hey, seeing as you have already made your verdict on whether we put the Publicly released development versions on the version history or not, I'd like for you to read my argument on why I think that these logs should be not deleted off of VH, but moved to a new page. Also, remember that you've probably seen how cluttered the version history page is, and remember that this will help a bit de-cluttering it now and in the future, as these public release builds look like they are going to be something to stay. Talk:Version_history#1.8_Leak UGoBoom 00:24, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

I didn't make a final verdict, I uncommented them due to 1.8 being added to the version template, thus being put on the main page, so we needed a temporary solution to show the changes in the version. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 02:05, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I understand a bit better of the intentions of what was going on. Since I'm in no expertise position to successfully make a new page, that being if that is even the verdict or not, so I'll start cleaning and organizing some other things on the page. UGoBoom 22:20, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Enderman Eye Color

There's another argument going on about Endermen -.-

Do Endermen have purple eyes or green eyes in 1.8.1? If they do have purple eyes, then could you please unlock Enderman.png so we can give it the correct texture? Thanks. Shockman25 04:42, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

The texture is purple, there's no green texture, so there is never any green endermen. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 04:49, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
Exactly. For some reason, Kizzy says that Endermen have green eyes in 1.8.1 and has reverted the Enderman image to the green-eyed version and locked it. Shockman25 04:52, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Moving pages

I am trying to move Huge Mushroom to Huge Mushrooms to match Mushrooms page, (I now realize Huge Mushrooms is already a page, so I can't) but I cannot seem to find the same edit button as is shown here. I looked in my preferences and changed around a few things to no avail. Is moving pages not possible for lowly users like me, or am I just missing something? Verhalthur (talk)(contribs) 15:42, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

That "edit" button is wikia's version of the tabs above. Delete/Move/Protect are kept in the drop-down box next to the tabs (or not if you have the javascript that pulls them out of there).
You shouldn't be referring to wikia for any kind of help, they're using a rather modded version of mediawiki, it's a lot different to ours.
It doesn't matter anyway, you can't overwrite an already existing page with a move unless you're an admin (since you're technically deleting the page in the way first). –ultradude25 (T|C) at 16:00, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I gave up trying to move the page when I realized that. So turning off "Show edit toolbar (requires JavaScript)" in my editing preferences should allow me to see the move button? Verhalthur (talk)(contribs) 16:03, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
The edit toolbar has nothing to do with it. I'm talking about the tabs. Where delete/move/protect is for me there would be a drop-down arrow for you, which would show move on any pages you're able to move. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 16:07, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

How can I view Minecraft models?

I want to contribute with isometric style images like some mobs have for the Villager page, but I can't seem to find information online. Whenever I look up things like "Import Model Minecraft View" or something, all the links are for "Importing models into Minecraft!" and annoying things like that. The only one that claimed to open .java files of models, the Import button wouldn't do anything for me. Would you know how? MegaScience 13:43, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

You don't import them, you model them manually by eye. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:21, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
The game still ends up with models in the game. I suppose nothing exists to directly open the files, and convert how models are produced in the game to work as an actual model.
Before I say this, I understand that they are made a special way no one has created an automatic way to view as a model. What I will say is they end up like a model within the game, which is why I thought there would be some converter that reads how the models are created in the game to make them function in some program for viewing. If the game can create shapes and such out of them, someone might someday figure out how to make them read elsewhere in the same fashion...
All that said, okay, nothing I can do then. Sorry to bother you. MegaScience 03:56, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
The models seem to be made dynamically by the game, I have yet to spot any kind of model files. There probably wouldn't be a way to convert it if it's like that. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 06:54, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm just saying that it isn't a conventional model, but it is a model in the sense that whatever data that makes it up makes a model in game. I'm sure it is just simplistic data that the game itself uses to create the models and such, but in any case something like this should be able to be read by something. I mean, it is a model. It's not a .blend or something, but it has a file, the file is used by the game, and ingame there is a shape that technically is a model. If it's done a special, hard to figure out way, it is. But... Ya I'm just frustrated with how people treat the subject. I know it can't be imported in any simple way yet, but it shouldn't be impossible... MegaScience 02:15, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Mob Renders

Not trying to push you or anything, but I would appreciate it (and a lot of others would, too) if you could do mob renders for Magma Cube, Blaze, Mooshroom, Villager, and Snow Golem. Cool12309(T|C) 16:24, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Blaze and mooshroom are already done, also I've already said I don't do mobs. I hate trying to work with the mob texture layout, too confusing. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:48, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Chest Render

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/File:Chest.png shouldnt the v1.8 chest be smaller on top? i thought that it was more like (for instence 8x9x9 while it was before 10x10x10)

--CoolKill3r 06:39, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Nope, that's all correct. Although the latch is actually 1 pixel too high, I'll fix that now. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 12:56, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Italian translation page

I am attempting to save an italian translation of the page for pressure plates but I keep getting blocked from saving it due to videos and external links in the original page. Is there a way to save this page? I am figuring out the sums and differences Every time.

It doesn't tell me what is blocking it. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 04:13, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Signature Question

Are we allowed to use a template for our signature? Cool12309(T|C) 17:20, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Since I assume he'll check back here, and Ultra can respond too, I'll say that what I'd do is branch off my userpage with one called Signature. Then you just put in the signature part of your preferences, and that's templating your signature. I'd bring over my signature from BioShock Wiki, but it can be considered a bit long. MegaScience 17:30, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes, you're allowed to use a template as long as it's subst (for performance reasons). But because of this, it means you still need to keep the code in the signature to a reasonable level, since it'll still be in the page like a normal signature. My signature (not including date and time) is just a few char over how big any signature should be, so as long as it's no bigger than mine, then you should be fine. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 22:39, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Music Discs help

Beta 1.9 Pre-release 2 just put all but one of the unused music files into use. As such, "Gold Disc" and "Green Disc" aren't appropriate names since we have others colored like it. I tried to edit the Music Discs page, but image files are still named by color, and we'll have some time before the other discs get uploaded. The real problem is how to name all of them, and especially how to shorten the page if we want to list them all. Any ideas? MegaScience 16:02, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

I've uploaded 150px versions of all the music disc images named in the format "Music Disc-<song>.png". I haven't reuploaded the Green and Gold ones though. --Wizjany 16:06, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
I think we should do the same than on the Wool Dyes page, with an animation of al the discs in the infobox. – Scaler (t) 16:58, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
It is rather standard. See Stairs, Leaves, Slabs, Tall Grass, and probably more. Verhalthur (talk)(contribs) 17:02, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, do an animation and keep them all in one infobox. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 23:13, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Idea Of Mine

reference to mod: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/638645-18-game-mode-switcher/
Instructions: Download the program from the link above. Save your world and close Minecraft. Run the program and click the "Browse" button Pick the world your want to change and select it's "level.dat" file Pick which game mode you want and click "Save" Play Minecraft!
I was thinking that this mod should be put in the spot light for most of the wiki editors and contributors. It allows you to switch from creative/survival. I use it in many bug test, giving my self items in creative and then allowing myself to switch to survival to test things. –The preceding unsigned comment was added by Throex (Talk|Contribs) 03:45, 30 September 2011. Spotlight? What? Why? There's nothing special about that mod... you can already use NBTEdit to do that, and you don't need to exit minecraft either, just close the map first.
And if you just want items, then use the TMI mod. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 23:13, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
I thought about all this after I posted it, but for people that can't mod and update them on their own and wait for updates to mods can use that in the mean time. But I can understand all that was said...didn't really mean the spotlight. lol Just a way to help out contributors. --Throex 23:20, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Potion Images

I was wondering where you found all the potion images and names? Also how did you got a white/clear background as when I tried it came in with a black background instead :(. I like to help keep things up to date but pictures seem to be my downfall.... Rafiki2085 03:19, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

By playing around with the data values, I found them. For transparent images, you just delete the background. Should work in any image editor, even paint. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:21, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
So is each potion its own Data Values or does it use the subscript? If its the subscript how did you get all the different subscripts edited in to find the pictures? I want to finish editing the Data Values page with all the potion information but didn't know how to find it as I figured the rest of the potions are subscripts and I have never been able to figure those out. Rafiki2085 03:25, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
Nah, they're just standard damage values like blocks use. The ones I used in order (on the potions page) are: 13, 35, 105, 131, 144, 261, 294, 380, 649, 671.
You can use a program like NBTEdit to change the damage values of items in your inventory. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:39, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the information I have a lot of work ahead of me if there are that many values to record. Excel here I come.... :) Rafiki2085 04:17, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
I highly recommend the LolEditor as it has a refresh button that allows you to continuously change your inventory while you are ingame, without closing the program. It is what I use to find out information for newly released features. Verhalthur (talk)(contribs) 18:52, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Question

When do you use File:Grid (name).png and when do you use File:Crafting square (name).png? Cool12309(T|C) 17:01, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

And can you do an isometric render of File:BrownMushroomStalk.png? Cool12309(T|C) 17:10, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
Crafting square is deprecated. If it wasn't for the other languages, I would've deleted them all already. If you need the background as well use grid. It's a standalone version for use anywhere.
Like the infoboxes, it currently has the bug where the background gets thrown out by 1 px up or down sometimes, but that'll be fixed once I've finished re-writing the grid system, although that might take a while, so I might try to make a quick fix for the standalone soon.
There's already a render for that, unless you want it in its default damage ID. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 17:14, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
Well someone said the brown stalk is the same as red except the top, which is also the side texture. If that's true, can you make it? If it's not true, can you move File:RedMushroomStalk.png to File:MushroomStalk.png? Cool12309(T|C) 17:27, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
The stalks are identical. Although there's no point in moving the image. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 17:33, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
The point in moving images keeps the wiki style, and things such as Renewable Resources won't require the image= after it (for most cases) Cool12309(T|C) 17:36, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
But it causes issues with other languages. Moving an image isn't simply, press move and you're done. You have to find where the image is used on the other two languages that share our database and fix it there. Redirects might work (and that's a big might), but I'm not going to try it until I have time to fix everything if it doesn't work. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 17:39, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
The quick fix for grid is done and applied, no more alignment issues. It only uses one div now, as well. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 15:17, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Cheers

Thanks for removing that troll comment from my skin image. 18:19, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Snow, farmaland and wool

Can you make a render of the snow cover without the grass? You can remame this file File:Snow.png to File:Snowy Grass.png and upload the snow w/o the grass as a new version of Snow.png --Ua 14:03, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Well since it's a block modifier, I'd think it'd be better to have it show how it modifies the grass block. Or should we have both on the page perhaps? –ultradude25 (T|C) at 14:39, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
I personally think that it's better to have both on the page.--Ua 14:51, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
Done. :) –ultradude25 (T|C) at 15:11, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Sorry for bother you, but can you make a gif with dry and hydrated farmland and one with all the 16 wool blocks?--Ua 13:21, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

I was thinking this for the farmland, but not the wool. Nice. Also, ultra, can you remove links to Gold (Ore) in User talk:Ultradude25/Archive 2 (I know you're like "UGH WHY DOES HE WANT ME TO DO THIS ALL THE TIME" but it's because I don't want What links here links to a redirect page. Cool12309(T|C) 00:04, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
I've been planning to do the wool for ages, I just never got around to it.
And yes, it is annoying to have to go through old archives to remove links, but I know where you're coming from.
I'll stick it all on my to-do list so I don't forget about it. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:45, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Notice

Hi, you were the only person that I figured I might get a response out of on this but anyway, Is there a way to have notifications, or anything of its nature for pages you have posted on and people reply to them? I am sure there are post I have made and I make so many I can't remember where they all are and there may be replies waiting now. For wondering.. thanks. --Throex 00:24, 5 October 2011 (UTC) Also I know that the watch list will put pages in bold when someone has posted or replied, I am thinking more personally when it comes to a notification. --Throex 00:26, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Well a talk page is just like any other page, but with a Talk: prefix. The software only knows that the page was edited, it doesn't know if it was a reply to anyone specific. The watchlist really is the only conventional way.
An alternative way could be, make a folder in your bookmarks and bookmark any talk pages you've made replies on, then go through those bookmarks to look for replies. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:45, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I just started making note of it in a notepad. --Throex 04:12, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Display changes

Are the menus in the sidebar broken for you? (also, it seems like the buttons for editing, like the signature button, are broken also). --JonTheMon 18:23, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Javascript appears to not be working. Curse must need to update whatever files keep the base javascript in. #mw-panel div { display: block !important } That'll force them all open until it's fixed. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 18:29, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, they seem to be working again. It was nice of Curse to let us know they'll be messing with the wiki. --JonTheMon 18:41, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
They've been planning to update mediawiki for quite a few weeks now. Although a site notice wouldn't have hurt... –ultradude25 (T|C) at 19:55, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Alternating Table Rows

Hi Ultradude! Thanks for pointing out the 'alternatingcells' class. I didn't like how I had to specify the class on every table row, so I made another class 'alternatingrows' that only has to be specified for the table itself. The CSS is found on my User CSS file. I don't know if this is your area, but would you mind adding that style to Mediawiki:Common.css? - Codewarrior 14:38, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

I'll look into it, and see about replacing alternatingcells with it. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:10, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
I've added it to the common.css and applied the changes to the infobox templates. Good work! –ultradude25 (T|C) at 05:39, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Extracted Minecraft models

Hi, I was able to extract (or rather generate) the Minecraft models in their exact form directly from the game code, texture mapping included. That could save a lot of work for the isometric renderings here (especially for the upcoming enderdragon) and I'm sure there's also common interest for these outside this wiki. Now you seem to have much more experience in modeling than me, so I could use your help to find remaining errors. Here's a collection of all models in 1.8.1, if you want to have a look at it. --Barracuda 10:59, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

Updated the pack, some boxes had inverted rotations on the Y-axis. Let's see if I can extract the 1.9 models, too... --Barracuda 19:21, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Wow great work! I didn't know it was possible to do that. They don't really work too well with blender though. They appear to have mipmapping, so the texture is all blurred, but it may just be a setting I need to find somewhere. Blender has waaay too many options, it's very confusing.
I don't know what software you're using for rendering yourself, but I'd recommend you find a way to disable the shadowing, as minecraft doesn't have that. In blender I just set the shadow colour to white. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:10, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! Actually, I'm using Blender, too :) I know about the texture filtering problem, you currently need to manually turn it off. Maybe the .obj format has some material properties to change that, but I'm quite at the beginning right now.
Oh, and you wrote for the brewing stand image that Blender has troubles with transparent textures. Well, it's rather the complexity of the options again ;) You can enable proper transparency in the "Texture" tab at "Influence" by enabling "Alpha" and setting it to 1.000. --Barracuda 06:43, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
I found out I was using quite an old version of blender actually, apparently it doesn't autoupdate. I was on 2.49b and the newest 2.59... downloaded that and oh god everything is different I'm so lost.
The alpha thing is weird. Normally, alpha doesn't show up until I actually render, but sometimes (maybe I've accidentally pressed something) it'll show up in the window, and when it does the the alpha becomes corrosive, as in it overwrites anything under it. Take the rendered in one go brewing stand for instance. As you can see, the alpha is replacing anything behind it, but the image is still transparent (shown by the checker-board behind it). –ultradude25 (T|C) at 07:37, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Oh ok, didn't know that. I started learning Blender with 2.5, looks like that was a good idea. And for the alpha thing: maybe you selected "Mask" instead of "Z-Transparency" as transparency mode for the material. --Barracuda 10:35, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Oh hey, you're right. Toggling Z-Transparency worked. I guess there is a keyboard shortcut for it, that I've hit while fumbling around making the model.
I don't know how the transparency gets turned on in the viewport though. By default it just shows up black, but it's transparent on this model. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 11:01, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
I have that same problem sometimes, too, still need to figure out why... but at least the rendering works. --Barracuda 11:08, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

About your deletion of Obsidian Tower

If you think its too early to talk about the ender, you are wrong. It's like saying its to early to talk about piston before 1.7! 99.109.60.172 04:00, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

I already added Obsidian Towers to Generated structures. They don't need their own page. Shockman25 04:26, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
The only reason for any generated structure to not be on the generated structures page is if it has enough information to not be a stub. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 04:32, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

why?

Why shouldn't we clean up talk pages and make them more user friendly? Are we just keeping it so someone can look back and say, that's the question i posted right before 1.3 came out and get a warm-homie feeling? Theesexiestman 05:44, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

No, its called an archive or leaving them there for future reference. I have used many talk pages with things from 1.6/7 that have answered my questions without me having to ask it. Its called references and a bright mind to research/look it up before asking or posting. --Throex TALK|CONT 05:36, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Well when your on a discussion page about upcoming content there is little point in keeping old news there especially when it has already been posted on the real page or worse, released. Also shouldn't I be talking to Ultradude25 here on his page? And what about pranks on discussion pages? Shouldn't those be deleted? And if you still insist that all that pointless information should be kept then why don't you make it a rule on the wiki rules page.Theesexiestman 05:44, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Only spam or topics completely unrelated to the wiki should be removed, and unrelated topics should only be removed if it's only recently added and hasn't already got replies, there's no need to clean up old topics. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 06:23, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Shouldn't that be stated somewhere obvious on the wiki then so people don't get blocked without knowing and then become resentful of the wiki? Also, there are people who don't have the control find option with their computer (or simply don't know how to use it) who have to weed through all the outdated information that is cluttering up the place (specifically on the upcoming features discussion page). I think that outdated info should be present on normal pages because there is generally little on those pages anyway. But with the upcoming features discussion page the outdated info should be dealt with like on a real topic page, put in a trivia section or in an optional archive link so as to not make a mess of the current discussions. another possibility is to order the discussions on that page by most recently commented on.Theesexiestman 06:51, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
It's a general rule that you shouldn't be going around deleting stuff from pages because you want to. If they don't have access to Ctrl+F then they must be using an incredibly old browser, that probably can't load the wiki anyway, and if they don't know how, well that's their own problem.
Old posts will be moved into an archive once the page gets long enough (and someone can be bothered), leaving only the new posts. If your argument is it's hard to sort through the old posts, well for one, why are you trying to do that? All the fresh information that you should want to look at is at the bottom of the page as new topics are made. The only exception to this is very lengthy discussions, but they'd be pretty easy to spot, don't you think? –ultradude25 (T|C) at 07:57, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
You are a very convincing man, but i was deleting to make things clean and current. but if you guys want to keep all that stuff then its up to you. but if i post something that i don't think is relevant after a month or 2 will anyone get angry if i remove it? I mean from a discussion page, not my research on feature characteristics -that's both current and useful. And is there a page with that general rule and more rules like that that i should look at? - thank you for taking the time to respond Theesexiestman 09:08, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
I really don't think those old posts are going to cause anyone any troubles. I don't know what other people think, but I don't have a problem with people deleting their own comments, as long as there is no replies (otherwise you'd either have to delete their comments, which is bad; or leave their comments out of context of the original comment, which is also bad).
General rules, well ideally they should be on the wiki rules page, but no one seems to really feel like updating it (I sure don't, at least). I'd say you should go with what you think is right, but if it's something that may cause a lot of edits, or an edit war or something bad like that then ask everyone else to see what they think. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:38, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Solution, someone create a page with a huge FAQ on it and the answers will link to any old/related topics on talk pages from the past. This would actually be quite hard to do because the person doing it would have to read through every talk page and find any relative stuff to link to it. It would take some time to do this, but would be worth it. --Throex TALK|CONT 14:39, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Enchantment table gif?

Maybe you should do a gif showing the enchantment table's book turn, or flip pages, or closes and opens, or two of them, or all of them.--Yurisho 09:30, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Maybe. It's quite a difficult animation, which will look especially bad because of the low framerate of the gif. It really depends on if I have time to screw around with it. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:38, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Leaves, grass block, pumpkin and melon stem

I've colored pixel by pixel the textures of leaf blocks and grass blocks (top only) and now they have the inventory color. With these texture, you can upload Leaves.gif with official colors and Grass.png with official top texture color. I made some screenshots featuring Steve holding the various blocks with the top toward the sun, so that they are the brightest possible. With paint.net I took the colors and I changed the textures. 2 questions

First, I am wondering what you think of the change from neutral mobs to irregular mobs because of the addition of Endermen (and other potential irregular mobs in the future of MC). There's a convo on the mobs discussion page about it.

secondly, where is a page on user page rules, like who should have them and such. -thx Theesexiestman 03:52, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

I think irregular mobs sounds weird.
What do you mean? Anyone can have a userpage. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:55, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

it does sound weird but irregular fits better because of the Endermen who are not neutral.

and that's what i thought about the user pages but wasn't sure. thx Theesexiestman 04:57, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry to take more of your time but http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/User:Ecksearoh is attempting to make an edit war on the irregular/neutral matter, won't discuss and keeps reverting all additional information that I have added to the page not just the title. He may have a point if the makers have called that group neutral while the Endermen were present in the game or if they have called the Endermen neutral but won't stop to discuss b4 reverting. Your help is appreciated. Theesexiestman 01:27, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

It seems to me, that you're the only one that wants to change it to irregular. I don't see anyone coming to an agreement on the talk page, so nothing should've even be changed yet. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 07:38, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

White Stone Render

White Stone need a render, it is most important because I use you'r renders as a base for the Template:Environment dimensions icons (which currently has the obsidian render as a place holder) which bring me to another point - I am using Paint.NET, What is the best method for re-sizing you'r renders to 16x16? I was debating between Nearest Neighbor, which most of the time retain features, to the more advanced, Higher quality features, that contain alpha and stuff like that that do not fit well with the original render...--Yurisho 22:00, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Yeah Nearest Neightbor would be best. Although personally I think it'd be easier to see if it was just a flat texture, like all the Blocks images are. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 11:59, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Some Files Need Moving

File:Gold (Ore).png needs moving, and some others too. The gold ore has been on for about a week, and I thought you didn't know about it. Cool12309(T|C) 23:30, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

File:Blackcloth.png and the rest of the clothes too. Just a question, there only seems to be 3 individual renders for the wool blocks. White, Light Blue, and Magenta. Could you do the rest? Cool12309(T|C) 23:37, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
Yes I know about all the images that need moving (especially the grid images), but it isn't going to happen for a while. If I move them, they'll break the shared languages, which I've already done a couple of times (which is probably why oliver hates me). First I'll need to do some tests to see if there is a way around it, and if not how to find the pages that need fixing and how to fix them.
I've already got the wool renders on my to-do list, the only reason they weren't done originally is no page needs them, data values doesn't use renders for the damage values and the wool page would have them together was a gif, which I haven't had time to put together. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 00:59, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I understand. Data values (Pocket Edition) has separate ID's for wool, which is why I asked about the renders. It doesn't really matter right now (we can use grid images for the moment). Cool12309(T|C) 17:16, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Re: Sig

I think I understand what you're talking about, as far as performance issues. Maybe. I've never noticed any of the wikis I've used the re-template trick on having any problems. But, okay! In order to have a signature that is unique, complies to the "no double-templates" rule, and isn't a mile long in code, I've gone ahead and simplified it down to 190 characters (just over two lines of text on a standard 80x24 display). It still says "Hi, I like fixed-width fonts!" but lacks the old-style "terminal" look I had prior. To avoid confusion with the timestamp, I've also elongated the "U|T|C" into actual words. Hopefully, the signature looks okay now, both code-wise and otherwise. I think it does, at least!

Also, sorry about using the wrong call code in the first place. I actually pinched everything from myself on Wikipedia, where I'm known as "Joseph Collins". I honestly didn't notice my signature wasn't displaying correctly until just recently! I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, sometimes...

Anyway! Thank you for your patience and understanding. I'll continue to enjoy my stay here at the wiki! ~ Doc Lithius (Info|Chat|Edits) 11:38, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Well the performance issues problem depends on how much you post in talk pages. The wiki already has enough performance issues as it is (it's currently running on 3 servers, and yet updating the block template still brings it down for a few seconds). It's just better to make all signatures be subst (a rule that I've been meaning to have added to the wiki rules page for a while, never get time for it).
A tip for keeping your signature code down is to use redirects. Take a look at my signature for example, I use User:Ultradude25/t and User:Ultradude25/c as redirects to my talk and contribs page. Now of course you should only do this if you really need to get the size down (even with that my signature is right on the "limit", keep under that and you'll be fine), as it's a little slower loading than normal links. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 11:51, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
... huh. I never thought to do that before, despite my obvious knowledge of Wikicode and whatnot. That is a very useful tip indeed! Thanks! :D ~ Doc Lithius (Info|Chat|Edits) 13:57, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Some Pages Need Moving and Need Template Help

Template:Vh on this template, I can't figure out how to read the first and only first character of the first variable. For example, B1.2 would become Beta 1.2 and A1.2.0 would become Alpha 1.2.0. And about the pages, this page has some of the pages needing move. I wouldn't recommend using the new names on that page though, but the page on the page you're moving (what?). Cool12309(Talk|Contributions|Sandbox) 02:24, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

What's the point of that template? Just write the link out normally. Beta 1.9pre4 shouldn't be used on mainspace pages anyway, it'd be Beta 1.9 Pre-release 4. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:52, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
The point of it is to shorten pages. Regardless of the pre-releases, how would you detect the first character AND change it? Cool12309(Talk|Contributions|Sandbox) 17:32, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
Maybe this template: fr:Modèle:LienHist, would help you. – Scaler (t) 19:27, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Brewing Stand Grid

I just saw the excellent work you did on the Brewing Stand Grid, amazing stuff! --Ecksearoh 08:29, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! It's not perfect yet though. Because I had to use absolute positioning, it means it's partially broken in IE, and could potentially break in Firefox under certain conditions. However all it does is throw the paths image and Output2 out by 1px, so it's not major, but it doesn't look as nice when it does it. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 08:41, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
There is a problem with it: it shows what you must add and what you will get, but doesn't show you what you should start with. It's a small problem thought because ingridients are shown in the table an all possible potions listed on one page. — MiiNiPaaT|C 10:25, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
That's a limitation of the way the in-game GUI is set out. Nothing I can do about it unless I move away from the GUI's design (trying to avoid that). –ultradude25 (T|C) at 10:27, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
Works perfectly fine for me in Chrome. And I also wanted to thank you for fixing the table formatting, the Brewing page looks so much better now. --Ecksearoh 10:56, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
I know. One thing Chrome does do right is absolute positioning, never had a problem from Chrome with it. And I think the thing with Firefox was a one off (or very rare circumstance?), it hasn't happened since... –ultradude25 (T|C) at 12:57, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

About the Japanese templates

Could you please give the reason why we shouldn't translate the templates within the Japanese translation projects? I know there is an acceptable reason for it, but unless you show that everyone would waste time trying to translate them.Foreseti 15:42, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Not my rules, I just enforce them.
I believe the reason is they'd all have to be re-done anyway once you've been given a sub-domain, so it's a waste of time. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 00:53, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer, and sorry for bothering you.
I'll add the rule not to translate templates in the Japanese translation project's guideline, so you won't have to delete them any more. Thanks again, and we'll continue our effort to obtain a sub-domain! --Foreseti 14:08, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Template:Grid/Brewing Stand‎

Sorry, that wasn't on purpose. The grid was working fine in all the case I've tested, so I forgot to put it back. Is it necessary in some case? – Scaler (t) 10:06, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

If nothing is put there, it'll inherit the setting of any element it's in, so text-align: center tables causes it to also be text-align: center, but it HAS to be text-align: left. Which is why you have to put it in. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 10:35, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I tested with align="center" and not style="text-align: center", so I didn't see this problem… ^^" – Scaler (t)

Special:Disambiguations

Hi, I'm just wondering, isn't the special page Special:Disambiguations useless now that we have the Category:Disambiguation pages ? I mean, most of the disambiguation pages use this instead of this disambig FracqGrenade talk File:Apple2.png contributions 12:37, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

I'd prefer the category be used instead of the special page. Adding a page to a category is faster than parsing a blank template to add a page to a special page. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 13:30, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
That's exactly what I mean. Shouldn't the special page then be deleted? FracqGrenade talk File:Apple2.png contributions 15:47, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
There's no such thing as deleting a special page. It's part of the software. (Unless it's an addon, in which case you can remove the addon, but it's not.) –ultradude25 (T|C) at 04:00, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
The special page does something different! Special:Disambiguations lists only pages which link to disambiguation pages (and therefore should usually be corrected), whereas Category:Disambiguation pages has the disambiguation pages themselves. —KPReid 17:18, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
I don't see how that it at all useful. Pages shown there are redirecting to the disambiguation page, and the only way for them to do that is to purposely write (disambiguation) as part of the URL. It's not something you could accidentally do and need to correct. More often, you'd link to a page which then redirects to the disambiguation page, but that wouldn't show up on that special page. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:14, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Requesting for Admin

I've looked all over the wiki and even used googles site search paramaters but I can't find where I have to go to request to be an Administrator. Do I just ask you or is there some page where I stick my name to get scrutinized or something? :P --HexZyle 16:09, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

I always believe that if you have to ask, you're not getting it; but I don't know what others think here. I would advise you just be an exceptional editor, so that the admins notice you and consider asking you. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:18, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Ok fair enough. Sorry. --HexZyle 04:34, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
I was looking through how to do the process on wikipedia, but I guess that probably wouldn't work as good here, since this is quite a small community compared to wikipedia's thousand or so admins. --HexZyle 07:24, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Feedback

Hello! I want to thank you for everything you have done for the Minecraft Wiki. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Tesla, a wiki manager for Curse. The reason I am posting on your talk page is for some feedback. I was hoping you could tell me if there was something you would like to see on the wiki or if you think there is something we could do to help improve the quality of our service to the community. If you have any ideas at all, please feel free to stop by on my talk page and leave me your thoughts. Thank you! Tesla 06:41, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Sidebar

Would it be viable to try to mash the right sidebar into the left sidebar (like, is it any better)? See CSS and example. --JonTheMon 15:41, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

It would need a lot of modification to get it to work right. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:32, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Whoops, Don't know how I managed that (I'm going to blame my laptop track pad), you can delete my post about the user talk page, that has a fully formed discussion at CP.--Kerotan 01:25, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

It happens to me when my internet is capped. It usually happens when you edit the page before it's finished loading (which takes a while on dial-up speed internet). –ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:27, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

why was the page for the Color Codes exactly removed? the values used for chat formatting are different than the values from wool/dye. even though the chat-colors are only used by plugins/mods --MG127 20:26, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Table help

How do you make 2+ tables side by side? Cool12309(Talk|Contributions|Sandbox) 22:17, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Either put the tables in a table (easy but messy way, won't collapse if there isn't enough horizontal space), or give each one a style of float:left then after the last table you would want to clear (using ) so other content doesn't try to wrap around it.
Doesn't work. I've tried class="wikitable sortable" style="width: 50%; float: left" and class="wikitable sortable" style="width: 50%" float="left"; neither work. Cool12309(Talk|Contributions|Sandbox) 01:37, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
Also, is there any easy way to see when pages directly link to a redirect? (Uses Iron which redirects, for example) The only way I see there is now is going to list of redirects, going to each and every one of them, copying the whatlinkshere, and change accordingly. Cool12309(Talk|Contributions|Sandbox) 02:14, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
You've got width: 50% which stops anything from happening because you can't fit 50% width tables together as width doesn't include the margin, and all tables have a 1em margin, so you'd need to use something like 49% (or remove the margin, but then there would be no space between them, which might look bad).
If you use the styling I have which makes redirecting links green, you could go to Special:MostLinkedPages and pick out the green links.
Personally, I think you should just get a list of redirect pages, like Iron, and let a bot fix all the pages that links to them. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 02:21, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
"If you use the styling I have..." what style is that? Cool12309(Talk|Contributions|Sandbox) 06:06, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
In my vector.css. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 07:15, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Inter-wiki Redirects

Sorry about the edits to the user redirects; they showed up as broken redirects on the special page, and I didn't realize that apparently the special pages don't support interwiki. I just wanted to clarify before I end up doing this again: Does this happen on all special pages?

It's not limited to special pages, it happens everywhere. Image's whatlinkshere page doesn't show interwiki links, for example. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:52, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Grass block with 1.9pr5 dirt

I have an edited texture, I don't know how to render blocks so I'll send it to you if you want. ElementalChaos 03:45, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

What do you mean? The grass block is already done. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:51, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Blocked again...Please unblock

I was blocked again.. I was just submitting my edit from yesterday... I thought you guys already fixed the filter? Can't you make a whitelist of words not to block? - Asterick6 23:41, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

The filters haven't been changed. According to Wyn, there's nothing we can do about it having no warning or partial blocks. Also, I don't know how the filters work, so I can't comment on if a whitelist is possible. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 00:52, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Comment

Ok sorry about that. Next time I'll revert instead of commenting. But I did find it slightly amusing... so I copied it into one of my sub-pages. Is that alright to do? - Asterick6 22:23, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Semi-protection for Version_history/Development_versions

When I created that page, I've tried to keep it well designed and simple while informative, but I keep finding some people makings edits that don't follow the syntax, or just do not belong there. Most of the bad edits come from IPs, so I wish for Development Versions to get the same protection as Version History.

I'm telling you this here because I made a similar post a while ago without any response from an admin.

That page you deleted, if you weren't online at the time, would it have been appropriate for me to blank the page and then rename by moving the page to a less innapropriate title like "deletethispage"? --HexZyle 03:33, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Just blank and put delete in. Moving it will just put the name into more logs and move it back to the top of the recent changes. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 03:35, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the advice. --HexZyle 03:40, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Important Template Updates for 1.0

The main two things I was going to update that I found I could not were the blurb on the main page about Minecraft being in Beta, and the Version template. Just a reminder to do that as soon as possible! snoozbuster 00:33, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

Change portable image

Ultradude, I think the template for Android needs to be removed from the Camera page, and a Pocket template using an image of a mobile device should be made to replace the android template on that page? Because the Camera texture is in the iOS version too.
