This article describes content that may be included in a future update.
This content has appeared in development versions, but the full update containing it has not been released yet.
For passive overworld pig mob, see Pig. For humanoid pig-like nether mob, see Piglin. For zombified pig-like humanoid nether mob, see Zombie Pigman. For unimplemented pig-like Pigman mob, see Java Edition removed features § Pigman.

Hoglins are breedable hostile mobs and the main source of food in the Nether.

Spawning

These mobs are found in herds of 3-4‌[JE only] / 1–2‌[BE only] in crimson forests, and they may respawn over time. 5% spawn as babies.

Drops

In Java Edition, adult and baby hoglins drop:

 • 2–4 raw porkchop (cooked porkchop if they die burning). The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 7 with Looting III.
 • 0–2 leather. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 5 with Looting III.
 • 5 if killed by a player or tamed wolf.

In Bedrock Edition, adult hoglins drop:

Behavior

Hoglins attack the player on sight. When an adult hoglin attacks, it flings the player into the air.‌[JE only] Baby hoglins also attack, dealing less damage and not flinging the player. Hoglins also do not attack the player when standing near warped fungi placed on a block or inside a flower pot, running to 7 blocks away. All hoglins have high knockback resistance; however, baby hoglins flee when harmed.

Hoglins can be bred using crimson fungi, so a baby hoglin spawns, giving 1-7 experience. The growth of a baby hoglin is accelerated a bit every time a crimson fungi is used. They cannot be bred while they are running away from warped fungi.

Hoglins are hostile to piglins if they attack first. However, they avoid piglins if outnumbered by them, within 32 blocks. They do not attack other mobs.

Hoglins can't swim and will drown. Despite being nether mobs, they aren't naturally immune to fire.

Baby hoglins play with baby piglins, with the latter riding them.

If there are more baby piglins than baby hoglins, the baby piglins occasionally jump on other baby piglins, with a maximum of 3 on a baby hoglin.‌[JE only]

In Bedrock Edition, only 10% of baby piglins mount baby hoglins. Also, baby hoglins follow the adult hoglins.

A written book is an item created after a book and quill is signed.

Obtaining
Signing a book and quill
Written books can be obtained by signing a book and quill. After it has been signed, it cannot be edited again. The label does not say "Written Book", but whatever the player titles it. The title appears on the top line of the label, and "by <player>" (the player's username) on the bottom. bedrock, this is customizable without commands.

Usage
Written books can be opened by right-clicking (or holding down on the screen bedrock), and display a GUI allowing the player to read it or turn the page.

The contents of a book are an extra set of data attached to the item. This means that when a book is destroyed, its contents are lost with it.

Lecterns
One can place a written book on an empty lectern.

The lectern then emits a redstone signal depending on the displayed page in the book. On the last page, the lectern emits a signal strength of 15.

Chiseled bookshelf
the chiseled bookshelf while having a written book in the main hand will put the book inside the chiseled bookshelf.

Trivia
*When written books are obtained with commands (without the correct data tag), the label shows "Written Book" and has the text "*Invalid book tag*" when opened. The book is signed and cannot be edited without commands.
*Commands that were added to a written book using serialized JSON objects are executed through the chat system. This means that any command added to a written book can't be longer than 256 characters, which is the maximum chat line limit.
*During the 2020 April Fools Update Java Edition 20w14∞, throwing a written book into a lit nether portal would create a portal to one of the 2,147,483,645 new dimensions.

Fire charges can be used as ammunition for dispensers, or as a substitute for flint and steel.

When used, it instantly places a fire, similar to flint and steel. The fire charge is consumed in the process. It can prime TNT, light nether portals, campfires, candles, cakes with candles and creepersJE like flint and steel.

When a fire charge is fired from a dispenser, it shoots a small fireball.
