Hay bales are decorative blocks that can also be used to feed horses. They can be used as a compact storage for wheat. They are able to be placed in all directions, similar to the way that wood and pillar quartz blocks are placed. They can be fed to horses by right-clicking on one, but not by leaving it near one.

Hay bales can be fed to horses, donkeys or mules to heal up to 10 hearts. They are an effective method to heal horses if the player wants to heal them in a short period of time. Hay bales also speed up the growth of foals by 3 minutes, decreasing the time required for them to grow into an adult horse.

Obtaining
Block loot
Melon slices can be obtained by breaking (harvesting) melons using any tool or by hand. Axes, followed by swords, are the fastest tools for harvesting melons. A melon drops 3–7 melon slices, when broken; by hand, using a tool, or after being broken by the movement of a piston, with an average of 4.64 slices per melon.
Breaking a melon with a tool enchanted with Fortune increases the potential number of drops by 1 slice per level, up to a maximum of 9 slices.
