The Guardian is an underwater hostile mob. It also has a larger, grey, mini-boss variant called the Elder Guardian.

Spawn

Guardians only spawn naturally in ocean monuments.

Drops

See also: Guardian farming

Guardians drop 0 to 1 prismarine crystals, 0 to 2 prismarine shards, and 0 to 1 raw fish.

Guardians have a 2.5% chance of dropping a rare drop when killed by the player. The chance of which fish you get is identical to catching fish: 60% chance for raw fish, 25% chance for raw salmon, 2% chance for clownfish, and 13% chance for pufferfish.

Looting increases the maximum prismarine shard drop by one per level. The chance of getting a raw fish drop is 50% with Looting I (2/4), 60% with Looting II (3/5), and 67% with Looting III (4/6). The chance of getting a rare drop is also increased by 0.5% per level.

The prismarine crystals drop will only happen if the common raw fish drop fails, with the same chances as the raw fish drop. This works out to a base chance of 22% (2/9), Looting I giving 25% (4/16), Looting II dropping down to 24% (6/25), and Looting III giving 22% (8/36), which is the same as the base chance.

Behavior

Guardians swim around in water, attacking any players or squids that come into sight. They swim in abrupt charges, moving their tail rapidly when doing so. When swimming, their spikes retract. When not swimming they sink.

Their eye follows and stares at any nearby players, and will always look directly at who they're attacking. Guardians' eyes will still follow a completely unarmored player under the effects of a Potion of Invisibility, but this is entirely visual and they won't attack them. Guardians will still attack squids under that same status effect though.

When out of water, Guardians angrily squeak at the player while flopping about. They do not suffocate in air and can live indefinitely out of water. They will quickly move towards the nearest water source, at which point they swim away.

Combat

See also: Guardian combat

Guardians have two methods of attack: a laser and a thorn-like attack. Unlike other hostile mobs, a Guardian will not follow the player if they move out of sight. Instead, it will simply continue swimming until the player becomes visible again, and will then start to charge its attack.

The laser takes several seconds to charge, doing no damage in the meantime, and changing from purple to bright yellow. Once charged, the beam abruptly ends and deals damage. Guardians will swim around for a few seconds before firing again. If the target comes near the guardian while it is firing its beam, it will stop firing and swim away until it is at a comfortable range, at which point it will continue attacking. The beam cannot be dodged, and has a maximum range of approximately 15 blocks. Once the player is out of range, or if the beam is obstructed by solid blocks, the guardian's beam will disengage from the player, and deal no damage.

Guardians deal 2 hearts of damage every time it is hit when its spikes are extended. If cornered, the guardian will usually extend its spikes and fire at the player, even at point blank range.

A portfolio is an item that can save photos taken with a camera.

Obtaining
Portfolios can be obtained in the creative inventory or through the give command.

Usage
Once a photo has been taken using the camera, it appears in the portfolio. Once equipped, right-clicking brings up a two-page book of photos the player has taken, in chronological order. Captions can be added below each picture. Pressing the "Export Portfolio" button creates a .zip file with all photos as JPGs in a specified folder. The portfolio is also used to load custom items in Minecraft China.

A pufferfish is a poisonous food item that is used to brew Water Breathing potions.

Obtaining
Fishing
Pufferfish can be obtained through fishing. The pufferfish catch rate can be increased by Lure, which reduces wait time generally.
<!--1-6 exp-->

bedrock, pufferfish can be caught only when fishing outside jungle biomes and its variants (i.e. everywhere except in jungles).

Mob loot
Guardians and elder guardians
Guardians and elder guardians have a 2.5% chance of dropping a random fish upon death. This has a 13% chance of being pufferfish (0.325% chance of dropping a pufferfish). The chance of getting a fish can be increased by 1% per level of Looting, but the type of fish is not affected.

Pufferfish
Pufferfish always drop 1 pufferfish in its item form when killed. This drop is not affected by the Looting enchantment.

Usage
Food
Pufferfish restores 1 hunger and 0.2 saturation, but inflicts Hunger III for 15 seconds, Poison II for 1 minute, and Nausea I[JE only] or II[BE only] for 15 seconds. Unlike rotten flesh, it is not helpful to eat pufferfish while starving because they inflict more hunger than they earn.

Trading
Master-level fisherman villagers buy 1~4 or four pufferfish for an emerald.

Wolves
Bedrock, pufferfish can be used to feed a wolf, healing it by , but only when the wolf is not at full health. Unlike other wolf food, pufferfish cannot be used to speed up the growth of baby wolves, and cannot be used to breed them.

Trivia
* The consumption of pufferfish inflicting the player with Nausea and Poison is based on reality. Real pufferfish contain the dangerous tetrodotoxin within their organs, especially in the liver. Tetrodotoxin leads to quick death through respiratory paralysis. Muscle tissue and blood contain trace amounts. In East Asia, pufferfish are considered a delicacy known as fugu, as small parts of the fish are actually edible. Any chef preparing fugu must have special licensing/certification to prepare this dish.

June 3, 2014Jeb announces he is working on a hostile mob that lives underwater, though currently doesn't do much.
June 8, 2014Jeb provides more details into the upcoming mob - it will have a ranged attack and will be hostile to squid as well as the player. He recommended using a full set of diamond armor, potion of water breathing and respiration enchantment on Hard difficulty.
June 9, 2014Jeb posted a stylized Guardian image to Reddit for use as a user flair. This was the first indication of how the Guardian would look.
14w25aAdded Guardians.
14w26aGuardians are no longer immune to fire and lava.

Trivia

 • A guardian's eye is actually the "head" part of the mob's model. This gives the illusion of a dynamic eye.
 • Underwater, Guardians emit deep, growl-like sounds, but on land they emit high-pitched squeaks. This probably reflects the fact that water can alter sounds.
 • Guardians' laser-beam attacks are affected by the Potion of Strength, which normally only affects melee attacks of mobs.
