The Guardian is a hostile mob first introduced in 1.8. It is hostile and only spawns underwater, in Water Dungeons. Its eyes will always look toward the camera.
This mob was released in the 14w25a snapshot[1].
The Guardian spawns in Water Dungeons. It also has a larger grey variant called the Elder[citation needed] that spawns in the top floor of the dungeon, and, once killed, may respawn in other areas of the temple. The larger one appears to never respawn after it is killed three times. When approaching a dungeon, a ghostly image appears of the Elder and the player is given Mining Fatigue III for up to 5 minutes. To spawn the Elder version, use this command: /summon Guardian ~ ~ ~ {Elder:1b}
The Guardian attacks by sending out a large laser beam which harms the player. In addition, Guardians can target and damage players who are riding in boats; however once the player is out of range, the Guardian's laser will disengage from the player, and deal no damage.
Behavior
Guardians will swim around in water, attacking any players or squids that come into sight. They swim in abrupt charges, moving their tail rapidly when doing so. Unlike squids, Guardians will not die outside of water, instead they will jump and flail around, making wet, squishy noises. They will quickly move towards the nearest water source, at which point they swim away. When swimming, their spikes retract and they don't deal damage when attacked. Guardians are also resistant to lava and fire.
Guardians' eyes will follow and stare at any nearby players, and will always look directly at who they're attacking. This makes them the first mob with dynamic eyes.
Attacking
The Guardian has two methods of attack, firing its laser and a thorn-like attack. The laser takes several seconds to recharge, doing no damage in the meantime, and changing from purple to bright yellow. Once charged, the beam abruptly ends and deals damage. The Guardian will swim around for a few seconds before firing again. If the target comes near the Guardian while it is firing its beam, it will stop firing and swim away until it is at a comfortable range, at which point it will continue attacking. The beam cannot be dodged, but can be obstructed by solid blocks. The Elder Guardian, when near, will give you Mining Fatigue III for 5 minutes.
Guardians also have spikes on their bodies. Although these spikes don't do any direct damage upon contact or as a melee attack, they act similar to the Thorns enchantment. The Guardians can extend and retract their spikes. If a player attacks the Guardian when its spikes are extended, the player takes a small amount of damage.
Combat
Guardians are very resistant to melee attacks when under water, as the player will not be able to quickly approach the Guardian due to the water's slowing effect. Guardians will swim away when approached by a player it is targeting, and the Guardian will deal 1 heart of damage every time it is hit when its spikes are extended. If cornered, the Guardian will usually extend its spikes and fire at the player, even at point blank range.
The Guardians are resistant to fire damage, but if somehow are brought to land, they might take some fall damage from their swift movement.
If the player must fight a Guardian with melee, they should try to corner it and hope for the best, or else try to maneuver it into swimming within melee range repeatedly.
The Guardian cannot shoot as fast as a player with a bow can, so a skilled player will be able to shoot the Guardian, and then hide to break the beam's lock, repeating until the Guardian is dead. If the Guardian is in shallow water the player can use a fishing rod to pull it out of the water onto land where the players can then kill it with melee without being shot at or hurt by the spikes.
The Elder Guardian has a very large amount of HP (80) and can also inflict Mining Fatigue III for 5 minutes, making melee attacks even harder. Elder Guardians do more damage than regualar Guardians. Diamond equipment enchanted with Respiration and Depth Strider, swords and bows are recommended.
Fighting Guardians is incredibly dangerous without armour. Armour is essential to combating Guardians, especially within the Water Temples. Entering their teritory without armour will almost always lead to a swift death, even if armed with a sword or bow and arrow.

Fishing
Enchanted books can be obtained as a "treasure" item from fishing with a fishing rod as part of the "treasure" category. The book has the equivalent of a level 30 enchantment from an enchantment table, but treasure enchantments are available and the chance of multiple enchantments is not reduced.
Trading
bedrock, librarian villagers have a 50% chance to sell enchanted books as part of their trades at novice, apprentice, and journeyman-level, and have 1 chance to sell enchanted books at expert-level as part of their trades, meaning each librarian villager can sell up to four books. The price ranges between 5-64 emeralds per book. Based on the level of the enchantment and whether it is classified as a "treasure enchantment" (meaning they are not obtainable by enchanting, e.g. Mending), which doubles the cost, or not a price is determined.

Drops
Vindicators and pillagers that spawn from raids have a small chance to drop an enchanted book with a level 30 enchantment, which may be a treasure enchantment.bedrock
Enchanting
Players can create an enchanted book by enchanting a book on an enchantment table. Books have a decreased chance of getting multiple enchantments (specifically, if multiple enchantments would be added, then one is removed at random), and have a lower "enchantability level" than most other items. Treasure enchantments such as Mending cannot be obtained from an enchantment table.
Bartering
Players can barter with piglins by using or throwing gold ingots, and doing so has a 5 chance for piglins to give the player an enchanted book with any level of Soul Speed. Soul Speed enchanted books are only obtainable through bartering, chest loot inside a bastion remnant, and fishing. They cannot be obtained through enchanting or trading.
Usage
Anvil mechanics
In Survival, enchanted books are the only method to obtain certain enchantments on certain tools, such as Unbreaking on shields. Enchanted books have a shine effect on their sprite.
To use an enchanted book, the player must place an item in the first slot in an anvil, and a book in the next. In order to complete the enchantment, the player must have the required amount of experience. Note that using an enchanted book gets significant discounts at the anvil. Enchanted books themselves can be combined to create a single book with increased or multiple enchantments, similar to combining tools or weapons.
When combining items, the compatible enchantments from the book in the second slot are transferred to the item from the first slot, keeping the highest level of any type. If two enchantments have the same level and a higher level is available, they combine into the next level. If a book is applied to an item that can't take all of its spells, the appropriate spells are transferred, while the unusable ones are lost. Enchanted books are single-use.
Enchanted books do not exhibit their enchantment. For example, a book with Sharpness IV as an enchantment does no more damage than an un-enchanted book, or any non-weapon item, would when used as a weapon. An exception is the Fire Aspect book which can ignite TNT and light campfires and the Mending book if the block mined can be broken by fist.bedrock
Available items
Enchantments
Enchanted books can enchant the usual items that can be enchanted at an enchanting table, but unlike an enchanting table, they are able to boost enchantments such as Sharpness or Thorns to their maximum power, and may apply the following enchantments to items (the table displays only netherite tools and armor, but any type can be enchanted):
<!-- do not change the items listed in this table. It is supposed to show the items that can receive these enchantments from an enchanted book, but are NOT possible through an enchanting table. -->

Creative mode
The player can enchant any item with any enchantment in Creative mode, allowing any applied effects to exhibit themselves.java For example, a stick can be enchanted with Silk Touch to allow the player to successfully dig grass blocks. The enchanted item can still be used in Survival mode without any loss of enchantments.
Enchantments that are normally incompatible are still incompatible; for example, Piercing and Multishot cannot be both applied to the same item, even in Creative mode.
If a block is enchanted, it loses the enchantment upon being placed in the world.
Disenchanting
Disenchanting an enchanted book at a grindstone yields a normal book and some experience depending on the quality of the book.
Chiseled bookshelf
the chiseled bookshelf while having an enchanted book in the main hand will put the book inside the chiseled bookshelf.

A knowledge book is a utility item that reveals available crafting recipes to the player when used.
Obtaining
Knowledge books can be obtained only by using commands, as it is not found in the creative inventory; therefore, it is impossible to obtain in other modes such as survival and adventure except with commands.
For example, to give oneself a knowledge book that reveals the recipes for buckets and flower pots, use: {{cmd|give @s minecraft:knowledge_book{Recipes:["minecraft:bucket", "minecraft:flower_pot"]} }}.
Usage
Knowledge books are used to reveal recipes to the player who uses it, by adding it to their recipe book. Using a knowledge book consumes it, removing it from the player's inventory.
Knowledge books are especially useful to mapmakers in conjunction with gamerule doLimitedCrafting true, because then any item is craftable only if its recipe is unlocked first.
