The Guardian is a hostile mob first introduced in 1.8. It is hostile and only spawns underwater, in Water Dungeons. Its eyes will always look toward the camera.

This mob is released in the 14w25a snapshot[1].

The Guardian spawns in the new Water Dungeons. It also has a larger grey variant called the Elder[citation needed] that spawns in the top floor of the dungeon. The larger ones appear to rule over these dungeons, as when approaching a dungeon, a ghostly image appears of the elder one.

The Guardian attacks by sending out a large laser beam which harms the player.

Elder Guardian, spawned in underwater dungeon

Behavior

Guardians will swim around in water, attacking any players or squids that come into sight. They swim in abrupt charges, moving their tail rapidly when doing so. When out of water, they will jump and flail around making wet noises. They will quickly move towards the water, at which point they swim away. When swimming, their spikes retract and they don't deal damage when attacked. They are also lavaproof.

Attacking

The guardian has only 1 method of attack, firing its laser. The laser will need a second or so to charge, doing no damage in the mean time, and changing from purple to bright yellow. Once charged, the beam abruptly ends and deals damage and the guardian will swim around for a second before refiring. If the target come near the guardian while it is firing its beam, the guardian will stop firing and run away until it is at a comfortable range, at which point it will continue attacking. The beam cannot be dodged, but can be blocked by solid blocks. Although, the larger guardian when you are near it, it will cast an effect on you that will give you Mining Fatigue III for 5 minutes.

GaurdianAttack

Guardians attack

Combat

Guardians are very resistant to melee attacks when under water, as the player will not be able to quickly approach the guardian due to the water's slowing effect, the guardian will run away when approached by a player it is targeting, and the guardian will deal 1 heart of damage every time it is hit then its spikes are extended. If cornered the guardian will usually extend its spikes and fire at the player even at point blank range, so cornering it is not an option to avoid the spike damage.

If the player must fight a guardian with melee, they should try to corner it and hope for the best, or else try to maneuver it into swimming within melee range repeatedly.

The guardian cannot shoot as fast as a player with a bow can, so a skilled player will be able to shoot the guardian, and then hide to break the beams lock, then shoot it again, then hide, repeating until the guardian is dead. If the guardian is in shallow water the player can use a fishing rod to pull it out of the water onto land where the players can then kill it with melee without being shot at or hurt by the spikes.

History

release
June 3, 2014Jeb announces he is working on a hostile mob that lives underwater, though currently doesn't do much.
June 8, 2014Jeb provides more details into the upcoming mob - it will have a ranged attack and will be hostile to squid as well as the player. He recommended using a full set of diamond armor, potion of water breathing and respiration enchantment on hard mode.
June 9, 2014Jeb posted an image to Reddit that appears to be one of the mob's textures.

A minecart with chest is a single chest inside a minecart, and functions as such.

Natural generation
Minecarts with chests containing loot naturally generate in mineshafts, each on top of a piece of rail.

Obtaining
Crafting
Minecarts with chests can be retrieved by attacking them. By doing so it drops as an item and any other contents of the chest are dropped as well.

Usage
Minecarts with chests can be placed by on any type of rail.

Chest minecarts' contents can be accessed by pressing use item button on them. The interaction makes no sounds and the chest does not show the opening or closing animation, unlike regular chests.

The boost that minecarts with chests gain from powered rails is dependent on their load. For example, from a 1 powered rail starter track, an empty minecart with chest travels 64 blocks, but a full minecart with chest travels only 16 blocks (opposed to 80 blocks for an occupied normal minecart and 8 blocks for an empty normal minecart).

Another physical property of chest minecarts is their ability to be stacked. While three chests can fit in an area three blocks tall, up to four chest minecarts can fit in the same area. Like other minecarts, an unlimited number of minecarts with chests can exist in the same block space.

Minecarts with chests are also able to interact with hoppers. Hoppers can take items out from the minecart chest if they are below the track as the minecart rolls over it or put them in if the minecart rolls under a downward facing hopper. Hoppers can also input items if they are facing into the side of the minecart.

Opening or destroying a minecart with chest angers piglins.

Tutorials/Storage minecarts

When on top of detector rails, nearby redstone comparators will give out redstone signals based on how full the minecarts with chests are.

Bookshelves are blocks that improve enchantments applied with an enchanting table when placed around one, up to a maximum of fifteen bookshelves, at the expense of level requirement.

Obtaining
Natural generation
Bookshelves can generate in village libraries and sometimes village houses.

Strongholds may contain up to two libraries, each of which may be single-level or have an upper balcony. These feature some bookshelves arranged in pillars, and more bookshelves arranged in pillars in the walls. Single-level libraries contain 161 bookshelves, while libraries with balconies contain 233.

Bookshelves also naturally generate in certain woodland mansion rooms.

Breaking
Bookshelves can be broken fairly easily by hand, but can be broken faster by using an axe. In either case, they drop 3 books when broken, allowing the reconstruction of the bookshelf with the addition of six wood planks. When broken by an item that is enchanted with Silk Touch, a bookshelf drops itself.

Usage
Enchanting
Enchantment mechanics#Bookshelf placement

If an enchanting table is placed near a bookshelf, glyph particles fly from the bookshelf toward the enchanting table. Having bookshelves in the proper position near the table allows the table to apply higher-level enchantments.

Fuel
Bookshelves can be used as a fuel in furnaces, smelting 1.5 items per block.

Villager
Librarian villagers can interact with bookshelves.

Bookshelf can be placed under note blocks to produce "bass" sounds.
