Template:Food

Golden Apples are a food item. They are moderately difficult to obtain, but are one of the most beneficial food items, along with Golden Carrots. They can be crafted, and are very rarely (about 0.66% chance) found in dungeon and stronghold chests.

Eating a Golden Apple not only restores 🍗🍗, but grants Regeneration for 5 seconds, healing up to 4♥♥ health total. They also give absorption for 2 minutes. Unlike other food items, Golden Apples can be eaten even when the player is full, which will still activate the regeneration effect.

Golden Apples are required in order to cure Zombie Villagers: While under the effects of a Potion of Weakness, Zombie Villagers can be fed a Golden Apple, which will cure them after a roughly 3-minute delay. They will then revert back to being ordinary Villagers.

Enchanted Golden Apples are similar to the original, but are much more powerful, much more expensive, and do not occur naturally. They grant Regeneration V (much faster healing) for 30 seconds, and both Resistance and Fire Resistance for 5 minutes (see status effects). Like the regular golden apple they also give absorption for 2 minutes. Enchanted Golden Apples shine purple, much like other enchanted items. They cannot be used to cure Zombie Villagers.

Advantages

  • They are the only food items that cause temporary constant health regeneration that is not dependent on the player's hunger. This is indicated by the line of hearts bobbing up and down in a wave pattern, with each full wave restoring half a heart.
  • Compared with potions of regeneration, golden apples are available for fighting monsters before the player is able to brew or even go to the Nether in single player mode. (Brewing requires Blaze Rods and Nether Wart, both found only in the Nether.) In particular, the enchanted version provides Fire Resistance, which is handy for collecting one's first few Blaze Rods.
  • Golden apples also are stackable up to 64 (like other food), whereas potions take up an inventory space for each potion.
  • Although red apples have a low chance of dropping from oak leaves (0.5% per leaf block), tree farming can produce a good supply of them. Trading with villagers can get them in quantity.
  • Golden apples are renewable due to the fact that Gold Ingots can be crafted from Gold Nuggets, which are obtainable through Zombie Pigmen.
  • Golden apples can be used to create a village by curing zombie villagers. If Generated Structures are turned off, this is the only way to have villagers and trade with them.

Disadvantages

  • It takes time to eat, and the basic golden apple then takes 5 seconds to heal 4 HP. Splash potions are a good alternative, if you have brewing capability.
  • Compared to a Golden Carrot, the basic Golden Apple restores less food and less saturation. If time is not a factor, and your food level is at least 12 (6 shanks), then a Golden Carrot will bring you up to the normal healing level, rendering the 4 HP of regeneration unnecessary.
  • Although they are in a sense renewable, they are still extremely expensive to craft. A single Enchanted Golden Apple requires exactly 72 Gold Ingots (a staggering 648 Gold Nuggets) along with an Apple which are not altogether common.

Trivia

  • An enchanted golden apple requires 72 golden ingots to craft; a normal golden apple requires 8 golden ingots to craft.
  • Due to this item being able to heal the player a large amount, they are commonly found as rewards in custom adventure maps.
  • Enchanted Golden Apples provide the highest level potion effect thus far: Regeneration V. The healing speed is enough to outrace nearly any source of damage short of explosions and falling into the Void.
  • Golden apples are the only foods that can still be eaten when the player's hunger bar is full.
  • Due the Maximum health boost it gives eating a normal golden apple while at full health will allow an unarmored player to survive a fully charged shot from a bow enchanted with level V power though this tactic is risky as it leaves the player with just half a heart.
  • In the popular Ultra Hardcore minigame, where natural health regeneration is turned off, the Golden Apple has a critical role as a healing mechanism, as it is the only non-potion item that directly heals the player.
  • Because of the very quick regeneration from the Enchanted Golden Apple, a player can get 90 hearts worth of health from the 30 seconds of Regeneration V.

History

February 27, 2010Golden Apples added, they healed a full ten hearts of health, making them the single best food in the entire game-at the expense of being near unobtainable.
beta
1.8Due to the addition of hunger, Golden Apples were changed so that they only healed five hunger points, but also gave the status effect of regeneration for 30 seconds.
1.9pre2Golden Apples gained a purple glow when viewed from the player's inventory, and its name tag was changed from the standard white to a magenta color. However, Potions of Regeneration were also added, the effects of which lasted longer than that of the Golden Apple.

1.111w48aGolden Apples became easier to craft. Red apples became able to very rarely drop from Oak Leaves, meaning that players no longer have to venture into Strongholds/Dungeons to find one; this caused the golden apple to decrease in value, but also made them easier to obtain.
1.1Golden Apples were changed so that they only healed two hunger and only gave 4 seconds of regeneration. Their crafting recipe was also modified, requiring Gold Nuggets instead of Blocks of Gold to craft. Although its natural spawn is rare, it is easier to obtain through crafting. With now common availability of apples and a cost of 1.24% their former cost in gold, they are for the first time a practical source of healing in Survival. All of these factors make the Golden Apple's value decrease greatly. Before, crafting a Golden Apple took 72 gold ingots (8 Gold Blocks). But after 1.1 it only takes 8/9 of an ingot (eight Gold Nuggets).
1.3.112w21aJeb tweeted that he has "decided to restore Notch's old Golden Apple and give it an effect proper for its crafting cost".[1] On Reddit, he clarified that this will be a new item; the existing Golden Apple and its recipe will not change.[2] A new Golden Apple was added, it highly resembles the Golden Apple prior to 1.1, having 30 seconds health regeneration, along with some new features like much faster health regeneration, 5 minutes of resistance and fire resistance. This Golden Apple, crafted with gold blocks, has a purple tooltip and shines like an enchanted item. The other one, crafted with gold nuggets, has a blue tooltip and no shine.
1.4.212w32aGolden Apples can be fed to a Zombie Villager with the Weakness debuff and they will eventually turn back into Villagers.
1.613w23aNormal golden apples use ingots instead of nuggets. They also heal half what they used to, since the regeneration effect slowed down.
13w23bNormal golden apples give the player Health Boost for 1:30 and Regeneration II for 0:10. This gives the player temporarily two extra hearts, and it heals a total of 4 hearts.
13w24bNormal golden apples give the player Absorption for 1:30. Enchanted golden apples give the player Regeneration V.
