A frog is a passive mob that can spawn in swamps.
Spawning
Groups of two to five frogs can spawn in swamp and mangrove swamp[upcoming: JE 1.19 & BE 1.19] biomes. Frogs can also be spawned by growing from tadpoles. There are three frog variants, determined by the biome in which the tadpole grew up[more information needed]:
Drops
In Java Edition, frogs have no drops other than 1-3 experience points when killed by a player or tamed wolf.
Behavior
Frogs can jump 3 blocks high and take 10![]()
![]()
![]()
![]()
less damage from falling than most other mobs.
Occasionally they may croak and inflate their vocal sac.
Breeding
Feeding two frogs a slimeball causes them to enter love mode, causing one of the frogs to become pregnant, similar to turtles. The pregnant frog then searches for a water tile with air above to lay frogspawn. This spawn later hatches into tadpoles, which subsequently grow into frogs.
Unlike all other mobs with baby variants, the tadpole is treated by the game as a completely different mob from the frog.
Attacking
Frogs attack by using their tongue to pull certain mobs into their mouth, whereupon the mob instantly despawns.
They attack small slimes, which drop slimeballs when killed, as well as small magma cubes, leaving a froglight block. The type of froglight depends on which type of frog attacked the magma cube; temperate frogs leave ochre froglights, cold frogs leave verdant froglights, and warm frogs leave pearlescent froglights.

Trivia
- The warm frog is based on the grey foam-nest tree frog.[1]
- Despite the fact that swamps lost the Biome Vote in MINECON Live 2019 taking second place, frogs were implemented in the game two years later in Bedrock Edition and three years later in Java Edition.
- Frogs were shown in Minecraft Live 2021 to enjoy jumping on big dripleaves.
- Originally, frogs could eat fireflies, but this changed, as in real life fireflies are poisonous to frogs. Instead, now they can eat small slimes and small magma cubes.[2]
- In Bedrock Edition, the fifth hurt sound of frogs is unused. However, it is used in Java.
