This article is about the mob in the base game. For the DLC pet mob in Minecraft Dungeons, see MCD:Arctic Fox. For the seasonal adventure pet mob in Minecraft Dungeons, see MCD:Fox. For the animal in Minecraft Legends, see MCL:Fox.

A fox is a passive mob that spawns in taigas, old growth taigas, snowy taigas and mountain groves. They are able to carry a single item in their mouth, but prefer food over other items.

Spawning[]

Foxes spawn in groups of two to four in taiga, old growth taiga, snowy taiga and grove biomes. 5% of them spawn as baby foxes. They can spawn on grass, coarse dirt, podzol, snow blocks, or top snow.

Foxes that spawned in a snowy biome are white.

Holding items[]

Foxes have a 20% chance to spawn (via spawn egg or naturally) with one of the following items in their mouth:

Item Chance
JE BE
Emerald 5%
Rabbit's Foot 10%
Rabbit Hide 10%
Egg 15% 20%
Wheat 20%
Leather 20%
Feather 20% 15%

Drops[]

An adult fox drops 1–2‌[JE only]/1–3‌[BE only] experience orbs when killed by a player or tamed wolf. Upon successful breeding, 1–7 are dropped. Killing a baby fox yields no experience.

Foxes always drop any item they pick up and are still holding (they cannot drop food that they have eaten, for example) and drop items they spawn with naturally with a 100% chance, so:

Drop Chance
JE BE
Emerald 1%
Rabbit's Foot 2%
Rabbit Hide 2%
Egg 3% 4%
Wheat 4%
Leather 4%
Feather 4% 3%

If a fox is killed while holding a totem of undying, then the fox consumes the totem and revives itself instead of dropping the totem.

Behavior[]

Foxes occasionally make loud screeches during nighttime, unless a trusted player is near them. Baby foxes follow adult foxes.

During the night, foxes sometimes go to villages. Snow foxes go to snow villages and red foxes go to any other type of village, preferably taiga villages since foxes spawn in the taiga biome.

Foxes flee from nearby wolves, polar bears or players unless the player approaches them while sneaking. They take no damage or speed reduction while moving through sweet berry bushes.

Fox jump

An animation showing a fox's jump during an attack on a chicken.

Foxes attack chickens, rabbits, cod, salmon and tropical fish, and baby turtles while they are on land. Foxes don't attack wolves even if they are being attacked by them.

Foxes attack either by running against or by pouncing. Like rabbits and goats, foxes can pounce more than one block high without status effects or player input. A fox prepares to pounce by tilting and lowering its head and lowering its body to become shorter. Then it leaps two blocks into the air, jumping over fences and walls if needed. If the target mob moves from its location during this sequence, the pounce misses the target. In Bedrock Edition, foxes also shake side to side before pouncing and their legs wave while in midair.

While foxes are capable of jumping over fences and walls, they cannot see through them.[1] A fox will not try to attack a mob on the same y-level if there is a fence between them.

Red foxes prefer to attack chickens, rabbits and baby turtles, all of which are on land, over cod, salmon, and tropical fish; conversely, snow foxes prefer to attack cod, salmon and tropical fish over land-dwelling creatures.

Fox in snow layer

A snow fox stuck in a snow layer when attacking.

A fox that pounces into a snow layer becomes momentarily stuck, remaining face-down, emitting particles while shaking, and returning to normal shortly after.

Foxes swim to attack fish in water for food. Baby foxes following adults into the water cannot swim and may eventually drown.

Foxes attempt to run toward the closest attackable mob, even if attached to a lead, but do not attempt to break the lead. A fox wakes up from sleeping to attack a mob.

Wild wolves are aggressive toward foxes when within 18‌[JE only]/16‌[BE only] blocks. In Java Edition, adult polar bears also sneak toward foxes to attack them; in Bedrock Edition adult polar bears attack foxes within 16 blocks. In Java Edition, baby polar bears, though normally passive to players, also attempt to attack foxes within 16 blocks or when their adult polar bear attacks one.

Sleeping[]

Foxes are one of the few mobs in the game that can sleep, along with cats, villagers and bats.

During the day, if a thunderstorm is not occurring, foxes attempt to find a space with a sky light level of 14 or less and sleep. Block light has no effect on this. While it sleeps, it slowly moves its head up and down. A fox wakes if approached by a player or mob. Foxes do not flee if the player approaches while sneaking until the player gets on an adjacent block.

If the sky light at the fox's position becomes 15 or above, either due to a block above being destroyed or the fox being moved, the fox wakes up.

Foxes can drop and pick up items in their sleep.

Trusting foxes can fall asleep even if attached to a lead. They can also be moved with leads while sleeping.

Foxes do not sleep if they are within 12 blocks of an armor stand.

Sitting[]

A fox sits down sometimes during the day if the fox cannot find a shaded area to sleep. The fox sits for a short time, then hops back up. Foxes sit down even when attached to a lead or in a boat. Foxes that have not been bred by the player always sit while in the Nether, even while attached to a lead.

Holding items[]

If any item is on the ground near a fox, it travels to the item and picks it up, and the item appears in the fox's mouth. However, usually a fox chooses to attack a mob over picking up an item. This behavior is not limited to food and animal products; a fox can pick up any item that the player can pick up. However, they prefer to pick up food items, and if they have already picked up non-food items, they drop the non-food items to pick up food instead. A fox can also swap a food item it is holding for a different food item.

A fox eats any food item it picks up (besides cake) after 30 seconds and the fox is affected by any side effects from the food, such as poison or teleportation. For example, if a fox eats an enchanted golden apple, it obtains the absorption and effects of the enchanted apple. If a fox eats any type of soup or stew, an empty bowl is dropped. If a fox is holding a chorus fruit, it eats the fruit and teleports accordingly.

If there is a stage 3 or 4 sweet berry bush within a 16 block radius of a fox, it sprints toward the bush and eats the berries, dropping the item it was holding. It is the only mob not damaged by the sweet berry bush.

If a fox picks up a weapon or an item with enchantments, such as Looting and Fire Aspect, these items affect the fox's attack as if the fox is wielding the weapon in its main hand, although the item retains its durability when used by the fox. If a fox is holding a totem of undying, it receives the effects after taking fatal damage. In Bedrock Edition, if a fox wields a sword with the Fire Aspect enchantment while attacking a mob on a campfire or a soul campfire, it ignites the campfire and does critical damage to the entity.

Foxes do not pick up items when gamerule mobGriefing is set to false.

Breeding[]

When sweet berries or glow berries are used on two foxes, the foxes breed, producing a baby fox. If a red fox is bred with an snow fox, the baby has a 50% chance of being either red or snow.

Taming[]

Breeding two adults with sweet berries or glow berries produces a kit that trusts the player. The baby fox trusts the player that bred it and does not flee from that player as it grows up; however, because baby foxes also follow nearby adult foxes, an adult running away from the player may cause the baby to do the same.

Naturally spawned kits do not trust players. Foxes attack specific mobs that hurt a player they trust.

Tamed Fox With Egg in Mouth

A tamed fox with an egg inside its mouth, notice it doesn't run away from the player.

A lead can be useful during this time to keep the baby fox from fleeing until it has finished maturing to an adult itself, or the player can simply kill the adult foxes with a ranged weapon.

A fox that trusts the player flees from wolves and polar bears unless the wolf or polar bear attacks the player, in which case the fox attacks in defense of the player.

When attacking phantoms, foxes do not jump to attack.

A trusting fox does not attack a tamed wolf unless the fox doesn't trust the player who tamed the wolf.

Foxes that trust the player attack zombies, drowned, husks, zombified piglins, skeletons, wither skeletons, strays, phantoms, silverfish, endermites, spiders, cave spiders, vexes, vindicators, evokers, pillagers, ravagers, blazes, endermen, goats and pandas, when those mobs attack the player. They do not attack any mob the player attacks, unlike tamed wolves. They also do not attack zombie villagers despite the fact that they are a zombie variant.

Tamed foxes retreat from polar bears and wolves but not tamed wolves. A tamed wolf whose owner attacks a tamed fox also attacks the fox.

A bone is an item primarily obtained from skeletons and similar mobs. It can be crafted into bone meal or used to tame wild wolves.

Obtaining
Chest loot
bone

Mob loot
Skeletons, wither skeletons, skeleton horses, and strays may drop 0–2 bones upon death. The maximum drop is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-5 bones with Looting III.

bedrock, salmon, cod, pufferfish, and tropical fish have 25% chance to drop 1-2 bones upon death. The maximum drop is increased by 1 to 2 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 2-8 bones with Looting III.
Salmon (small and medium size) have 25% chance to drop 1 bone upon death, The maximum drop is increased by 1 to 2 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 2-7 bones with Looting III. The chance of dropping bones increases by 1% per looting level, so with Looting III there is up to a 28% chance of bones dropping.

Fishing
Bones can also be obtained by fishing as part of the junk category. The best chance of catching a bone is achieved without the Luck of the Sea enchantment, yielding a 1.1% chance.

Usage
Helmet
While a bone cannot be equipped in the head slot in Survival mode, equipping it using commands causes it to appear in the player's mouth.

Taming
Using a bone on a wild wolf has a 1 chance of taming it. Bones cannot tame a hostile wolf or a wolf that has already been tamed. However, bones can be used to attract the attention of the tamed ones.

Crafting ingredient
A bone can be crafted into 3 bone meal.

A spyglass is a tool used to zoom in on distant objects.

{{Crafting

Usage
To use a spyglass, the player selects it from the hotbar and clicks use while looking in the desired direction.

Spyglasses are used to zoom in on a specific location in the player's field of view (FOV). The spyglass changes the FOV to 1 of the FOV set in options. By default, the FOV is set to 70° in Java Edition and 60° in Bedrock Edition, resulting in an FOV of 7° in Java Edition and 6° in Bedrock Edition through the spyglass. The player's FOV can be set from 30° to 110°, so the spyglass FOV can range from 3° to 11°. Regardless of the situation, or status effects the player has, using the Spyglass always shows a FOV 1 of the FOV set in options.

A square vignette is applied when in use, similar to the effect when wearing a carved pumpkin. Pressing F1 removes the vignette, java similar to a carved pumpkin.

Hazy distant objects remain hazy when viewed in the spyglass. Mobs too distant to render also do not render in the spyglass. The spyglass shows a magnified view of what the player already sees.

The player is slowed down while watching through the spyglass. When the player uses the spyglass continuously for 1 minute, the interface is automatically closed.

If the player has a certain effect on their screen like fire, the spyglass does not remove that effect on the player's screen.

Usage
When used on a mob, a fence, or a wall, balloons attach to the mob or block, similarly to a lead. Balloons float into the air faster than the speed the player flies up, but remain grounded if tied to a fence. If tied to a mob, the balloon floats away and carries the mob into the air, before both eventually despawn or disappear.

When a balloon is shot by an arrow or a trident, or floats into a solid block, it pops, summons particles, and is destroyed. It drops nothing. A balloon tied to a fence post bursts when a player strikes it in any direction.

Gold nuggets are items used to make gold ingots and other various golden items. One gold nugget is effectively worth one-ninth of a gold ingot.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Zombified piglins, when killed, may drop 0-1 gold nuggets. When killed using a weapon enchanted with Looting, they may drop an additional gold nugget per level of Looting used, up to a maximum of 4.

Chest loot
gold-nugget

Mining
Nether gold ore mined using a pickaxe drops 2-6 gold nuggets. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune, it has a 33.3% chance to multiply the drops by 2, Fortune II has a 25% chance to multiply the drops by 2 or 3 and Fortune III has a 20% chance each to multiply the drops by 2, 3, or 4 for a maximum possible drop of 24 golden nuggets. The average drop rate for a Fortune III pickaxe is 8.8, while the drop rate for a Silk Touch pickaxe is a single ingot, or a flat rate of 9. It is slightly more efficient to mine with a Silk Touch pickaxe.

Gilded blackstone mined using a pickaxe has a 10% chance to drop 2-5 gold nuggets. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune I, the chance gold nuggets drop is increased 14.29%, Fortune II increases the drop chance to 25%, and Fortune III guarantees the drop.

Usage
Gold nuggets can be used to craft a golden carrot or glistering melon for brewing. Also, gold nuggets can be combined with gunpowder and dye to create a firework star that bursts in a star-shaped explosion.

Piglins instantly pick up any gold nuggets that are within 1 block of them. Unlike other gold-related items, they do not intentionally seek out gold nuggets to pick up and only pick them up if they walk near it. Unlike gold ingots, gold nuggets picked up are dropped upon the piglin's death.

Trading
Novice-level toolsmith villagers have a chance to sell a stone hoe for one emerald, and journeyman-level toolsmiths have a chance to sell a diamond hoe for 4 emeralds. bedrock, these are 25% chances, and java, these are 40% chances.

Villager gifts
Toolsmith villagers occasionally throw stone hoes at players with the Hero of the Village status effect.java

Usage
Harvesting
Hoes are used to harvest certain plant-based or organic blocks more quickly. Breaking one of these blocks takes 1 durability.

Breaking any other block takes 0 durability if the block breaks instantly when broken by hand, or 1 otherwise.

Tilling
Hoes are used to turn dirt, grass blocks, and dirt paths into farmland. To till, press use on a grass or dirt block while holding a hoe. This does not work on mycelium or podzol, nor does it work if there are other blocks on top of the targeted blocks, including snow layers or torches. However, mycelium and podzol can be first converted to dirt paths with a shovel, then tilled into farmland with a hoe.

Hoes can be used to convert coarse dirt into regular dirt by pressing use on the coarse dirt. Similar to tilling dirt, the space above the coarse dirt must be empty for it to be tilled.

Hoes can also be used on rooted dirt, which turns it into normal dirt, and yields a hanging roots item.

Tilling is effectively instantaneous, regardless of material, and uses 1 durability. Breaking blocks with a hoe uses 0 or 1 durability, depending on the block.

Hoes are unable to work on blocks with a plant on top, even if that plant could normally be placed on top of farmland without reverting it to dirt.

Weapon
Hoes may be used as a weapon, although they deal only 1 damage java. bedrock, hoes can do as much as a pickaxe in terms of damage. Hoes use 2 durability when used as a weapon.

java, hoes have an attack speed modifier depending on the material: wood and gold have a modifier of -3 (refill in 1s), stone has a modifier of -2 (refill in 0.5s), iron has a modifier of -1 (refill in 0.33s), and diamond and netherite have a modifier of 0 (refill in 0.25s).

Trivia
*Tilling a dirt block that has a dirt block on top of it changes it to farmland even though it cannot be used. If a hoe is used on a block horizontally adjacent to such a block, the first block reverts to dirt and the selected block is not tilled.
*When a hoe breaks, it does not display the tool breaking animation like on other tools, because tilling is not predicted client-side.
*The textures for the post 1.14 iron and stone hoes have an error, where the color for the edge of the handle is partly the same color as the edge of the top part. This isn't present in any other tool.

 • Although a fox appears to hold an item in its mouth, it is technically holding the item in its main hand, therefore anything held affects it, such as a sword increasing its damage or a totem of undying resurrecting it.
 • In the real world, some species of fox jump high to catch their prey by surprise, an action reflected in their Minecraft counterpart.
 • When foxes were being added into Minecraft, a glitch occurred where they looked like boxes.[3]
 • Baby foxes are small enough that when they are swimming, they take drowning damage. This is noticeable when they attempt to attack fish.
 • There is a splash screen "In case it isn't obvious, foxes aren't players" in the game, which was added from the description of the bug MC-166292.
 • The first and third screeching sounds foxes make are the same. The first sound is the third in reverse, but higher-pitched, and the third is the first in reverse, but lower-pitched.
 • Fox sounds are actually combined and heavily edited cat and dog sounds.[4]
