Template:Mob
Foxes are nocturnal passive mobs that spawn commonly in taiga and snowy taiga biomes.
Spawning
Foxes will spawn in taiga and snowy taiga biomes and sometimes in taiga villages, in groups of 1–3. When spawned in a snowy biome, foxes will be white in color. They will spawn more commonly at night time, sleeping in the forests. There is a 1⁄6 probability of the fox spawning as a baby.
A fox with an emerald in its mouth.
Items in mouth
These items have a 8.5% chance to be automatically in a fox's mouth when they spawn:
Behavior and appearance
The specific instructions are: In-game images of arctic foxes sleeping, sitting, and jumping
They move quickly, about the same speed as ocelots, and will flee from any nearby players and wolves.
Attacking
A red fox leaping at a chicken.
Foxes will attack chickens and rabbits, crouching down for about 2 seconds, then jump into the air 2-3.5 blocks up over fences and walls when necessary. Foxes will also attack cod, salmon and baby turtles on land but not tropical fish or pufferfish. Red foxes prefer to attack chickens, rabbits, and baby turtles, all of which are on land, over cod and salmon; vice versa, arctic foxes prefer to attack cod and salmon over land creatures. Foxes that trust a player will defend them against hostile mobs should the player be harmed.
Sleeping
A red fox sleeping during the day.
During the day, foxes will attempt to find a space with a block above it and begin to sleep, while the fox is sleeping it will slowly move its head up and down and will not move. They will wake up and quickly flee if approached by a player. However, foxes will not move or run away if the player approaches while sneaking.
Sitting
A sitting red fox.
A fox will also randomly sit down every so often, usually during the day if the fox cannot find a “shaded” area to sleep.[more information needed]
Holding items
If any item is on the ground near a fox, it will travel to it and pick it up and it will appear in the foxes' mouth. This behavior is not limited to food and animal products.
Feeding
A fox will eventually eat any food item it picks up (besides cake, this is because cake has to be placed down to be eaten, this denies foxes can pick it up and eat it.) and the fox is unaffected by the ill effects of food items such as spider eyes. If a fox sees any food item, the fox will run towards it and pick it up. If there is a stage 3 or 4 sweet berry bush within a 16 block radius of a fox, it will sprint towards it, harvest it, and eat the berries, dropping the item it was holding.
Night life
During the night foxes will head to villages or go out to hunt. The practice of foxes going to villages is based on foxes raiding older towns for food in the real world. Foxes don't currently have the ability to steal from villages, except crops dropped from villagers, but villagers pick it their crops too quickly for foxes to pick up, so they walk away. You could keep an eye out for smaller foxes hidden around the houses, as they are easy to spot locked in houses and fallen in the wells.[needs testing]
Breeding
When sweet berries are used on two foxes, the foxes will breed, producing a baby fox. The baby fox will "trust" the player, and never run away from them. [needs testing]
Enemies
Wolves are aggressive towards foxes when within 18 blocks of them, (though usually foxes can get away because of their speed).Polar bears will also try to attack foxes. They will sneak towards them and will attack them, if they are close enough. Baby polar bears, normally passive, will also attempt to attack a fox within 16 blocks.
Drops
- Upon death, adult foxes drop 1–2 experience orbs when killed by a player or tamed wolf.
- Like other baby animals, killing a baby fox yields no experience.
- Foxes will always drop any items they pick up and drop items they spawn with naturally with a chance of 8.5%.
- If a fox is killed while holding a totem of undying this item will not drop, but be consumed to revive the fox.
Data values
Foxes have entity data associated with them that contains various properties of the mob. Their entity ID is fox.

Upgrading
Like other diamond tools, a diamond shovel can be upgraded to a netherite shovel, although increased durability and resistance to fire/lava in item form are the only benefits. The shovel's performance as a digging tool or a weapon is unchanged by the upgrade.

Unit repair
A shovel can be repaired in an anvil by adding units of the tiers' repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% the shovel's maximum durability, rounded down. It also keeps the shovel's enchantments.
Chest loot
On <code>ancient_city/city_center/city_center_2</code>, they generate a furnace with a wooden shovel inside of it.

Mob loot
Equipment
Drops#Equipped items
Zombies and husks have a 0.67% (3.33% in Hard difficulty) chance of spawning with an iron shovel. They have an 8.5% (9.5% with Looting I, 10.5% with Looting II and 11.5% with Looting III) chance of dropping that shovel if they are killed by the player. The dropped shovel is usually badly damaged, and may be enchanted: 0%–25% on Normal difficulty and 3.125%–25% on Hard difficulty, varying with regional difficulty, and enchanted as if on an enchanting table at level 5–22.
Raids
Vindicators and pillagers that spawn from raids have a 4.1% chance(5.12% on hard) to drop a badly-damaged iron shovel that is sometimes enchanted with a random enchantment.bedrock
Trading
Novice-level toolsmith villagers have a 25% chance to sell stone shovels for one emerald, journeyman-level toolsmith villagers have a 25% chance to sell enchanted iron shovels for 2 emeralds, and expert-level toolsmith villagers have a 50% chance to sell enchanted diamond shovels for 5 emeralds as part of their trades.bedrock
Novice-level toolsmith villagers have a 40% chance to sell stone shovels for one emerald, journeyman-level tool smiths have a 40% chance to sell an enchanted iron shovel for 7-22 emeralds, and expert-level tool smiths have a 2 chance to sell an enchanted diamond shovel for 11-27 emeralds.java
The enchantments are the same as the ones obtained from an enchanting table at levels 5–19.
Villager gifts
java, toolsmith villagers occasionally throw stone shovels at players with the Hero of the Village effect.
Usage
Digging
A shovel can be used to break some materials faster. When breaking a block, it uses 1 durability. For blocks that break instantly, it uses 0 durability.
Durability
Each different tier of shovel has a different durability:

* Mycelium
Campfire
A shovel can be used to extinguish a campfire.
Weapon
Hitting a mob while holding a shovel is a stronger attack than barehanded. Shovels take 2 damage when used as a weapon.
Java Edition
Shovels have an attack speed modifier of -3, meaning they take 1 second to recover. Shovels deal different damage based on the type:

other kinds of boats
A boat with chest is a single chest occupying the passenger seat of a boat, and functions as such. As it can still be driven it can be used to transport items over bodies of water.
Obtaining
A boat with chest can be directly retrieved by attacking it, as it drops itself in item form, along with its contents.
Tools and weapons with damage above 4 can instantly destroy a boat with chest in one hit.Java
Crafting
Usage
A boat with chest can be used for the transportation of players, mobs and items, or as fuel when smelting.
Fuel
A boat with chest can be used as fuel in a furnace, it lasts 60 seconds, smelting up to 6 items.
Transportation
Boat#Transportation
Boats with chests can carry only one entity while regular boats can carry up to two.
Behavior
Boat#Behavior
Boats with chests share most behaviors with boats.
Item storage
The inventory of the boat with chest has the same amount of slots as a single chest. Its inventory can be accessed by and with the boat with chest, with the part of the boat with chest that actually contains the chest while another player or entity is inside the boat, or by opening the player's inventory while inside the boat. This means that the player cannot access armor slots without exiting the boat.
When a boat with chest moves above, underneath, or beside a hopper, its inventory is filled or drained accordingly. Due to the size of its hitbox, a boat with chest can be placed above up to 9 hoppers, allowing it to evenly split its items nine ways.
Naming
java, unlike most other storage devices, a boat with chest renamed in an anvil does not display the custom name in its GUI.
Piglin
As with other chests, opening or breaking a boat with chest causes nearby piglin(s) to attack the player.
Sounds
Trivia
* A chest is short enough that a boat with chest falls onto it rather than crashes into it.
* The chest texture is 12×12 pixels, rather than the 14×14 pixel texture the block uses. This is not the case with the minecart with chest.
* Despite the minecart with chest using the Christmas texture, the boat with chest still uses the default chest texture during Christmas time.

Issues
Issues relating to "Fox" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.
Trivia
- Although foxes appear to hold items in their mouth, they are actually holding items in their main hand.
- Foxes are one of the only mobs that can sleep in Minecraft.
- The other mobs include pandas,[Java and Bedrock editions only][upcoming: Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 112: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).] cats,[Java and Bedrock editions only][upcoming: Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 112: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).] and villagers[upcoming: BE 1.10].
- Foxes are the only overworld land mob that can jump more than 1 block without status effects.
- Dolphins can jump over 1 block high as well, but they don't reside at land.
- They can pick and hold anything a player can, even modded items. [needs testing]
- Foxes are completely unaffected by sweet berry bushes and will take no damage while moving in them.
