| — Tom Stone[1] |
Fish are common passive mobs found in oceans and rivers. They come in 4 main variants: cod, salmon, puffer fish, and tropical fish.
Spawning
Cod spawn in normal, cold, and lukewarm oceans, and their deep variants.
Puffer fish and tropical fish spawn in lukewarm, warm, and deep lukewarm oceans.
Salmon spawn in cold and frozen oceans, and their deep variants. Unlike the other types of fish, they also spawn in normal and frozen rivers. Salmon can spawn in 3 size which is small, normal and large.
Drops
Fish drop 1 of their item form when killed: raw cod, raw salmon, pufferfish or clownfish. Cod and salmon will drop the cooked variant of their item if killed while on fire. A tropical fish will drop clownfish no matter what its type, pattern or colors are. Fish will also drop a bone (25% chance), also different size of salmon drop different amount of bone (up to 3).[Bedrock Edition only]
Behavior
Cod, salmon and tropical fish tend to swim in schools of fish (a maximum of nine cod, six salmon, and nine of the same tropical per school). Salmon are able to jump up waterfalls.[verify]
The player may collect a fish by using a water bucket on it, which gives the player a fish bucket. When that fish bucket is used against a block, it empties the bucket, placing water with that fish swimming in it.
Weaknesses
None of the fish are able to survive out of water. Outside of water, they flop around like guardians for a while until eventually they start to suffocate and die like squid. Cod, salmon and tropical fish will flip around on their sides. Fish will also suffocate inside of water which is placed inside of a cauldron.[2]
Fish have a weakness to weapons that have the Impaling enchantment, which also affects squid, turtles, drowned, guardians, and elder guardians.
Defenses
Puffer fish will puff up when approached by a player in any gamemode in a 5x5x5 cube arounf the fish[upcoming][3], going from unpuffed, then semi-puffed, to fully puffed. Puffer fish are technically passive mobs but going near one when fully puffed will inflict the player with seven seconds of Poison, and touching them in their puffed form will deal some damage separate from the poison.
Tropical fish varieties
The 22 common varieties of tropical fish
When tropical fish spawn in the wild, 90% of the time they will come in one of the 22 varieties seen on the right, and the other 10% of the time their patterns, size and colors will be completely random, drawn from any of 2 shapes, 15 colors, 6 patterns, and 15 colors for the pattern. These result in 2,700 naturally-occurring combinations. With commands, the player can summon tropical fish without patterns, or with black as one or both of their colors, giving a further 404 possible combinations.
Data values
Cod and salmon have entity data associated with them that contain various properties of the mob. Their entity IDs are minecraft:cod and minecraft:salmon.
Puffer fish and tropical fish have additional entity data, beyond what other fish have. Their entity IDs are minecraft:pufferfish and minecraft:tropical_fish.

A glow ink sac is an item dropped by a glow squid upon death. Unlike regular ink sacs, it can be added to signs to make glowing text, and can be used to craft glow item frames.
Obtaining
Mob loot
Glow squids drop 1–3 glow ink sacs upon death. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 1–6 with Looting III.
Compound creation
An glow ink sac can be created from its base elements, using the compound creator.bedrock

Glow ink sacs can be used on signs or hanging signs to make their text brighter in low light levels. This also adds an outline around the text on the sign, the color of which is based on the color of the sign's text. The text does not emit any light, it is only more visible in darkness, similarly to the eyes of spiders and endermen. Normal ink sacs can be applied to revert glowing text back to default.

Cooked salmon is a food item obtained by cooking raw salmon.
Obtaining
Mob loot
Salmon
Salmon always drops 1 raw salmon when killed, unaffected by Looting. If it is killed while on fire, it drops 1 cooked salmon instead.
Guardians and elder guardians
Guardians and elder guardians have a 2.5% chance to drop a random fish, with 25% of them being raw salmon, which drops as cooked if the guardian was on fire. The chance of getting the fish drop is increased by 1% per level with Looting (for a maximum of 5.5% with Looting III), but the type of fish is not affected.
Polar bears
Polar bears have a 25% chance of dropping 0–2 raw salmon when killed. The maximum amount can be increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-5 with Looting III. If killed while on fire, they drop cooked salmon instead.
Cooking
Cooked salmon can be obtained by cooking raw salmon in a furnace, smoker, or on a campfire. Each piece of cooked salmon removed from a furnace output slot gives 0.35 experience (22.4 experience per stack).
Raw Salmon
Chest loot
cooked-salmon
Trading
Apprentice-level fishermen villagers have a 50%bedrock or 2java chance to sell 6 cooked salmon for 6 raw salmon and an emerald.
Usage
Food
To eat cooked salmon, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 6 and 9.6 saturation, the same as cooked mutton.
Wolves
Bedrock, cooked salmon can be fed to wolves only if they are not at full health, healing them by . Cooked salmon does not accelerate the growth of baby wolves and cannot be used to breed them.
