Fireworks are items planned for 1.4.6. They were first planned for the Redstone Update, but Mojang wanted fireworks in the game before New Years. They first appeared in Snapshot 12w49a. Colors, fade, height, effects and shapes will be craftable. They can be fired out of dispensers to create a redstone powered fireworks display.

There are no sounds included for fireworks yet, however the code is in place to support them. There is a delay between detonation and the player hearing the sound, emulating real fireworks, but this sound travels much more slowly than in our world. [1][2]

Crafting

A Firework Rocket crafted without a Firework Star will create a rocket trail, but no colorful explosion. Adding up to 3 gunpowder to the rocket recipe increases the flight duration by 1 per gunpowder.
