The Ender Pearl is an item that was added in the 1.8 update and is sometimes dropped by Endermen upon death. These pearls can be commonly found during rainstorms and less commonly in bodies of water "naturally" as Endermen take damage from touching water. Before 1.9, this occurred much more frequently because Endermen didn't attempt to teleport away when they come into contact with water.

Use

Throwing an Ender Pearl by right clicking will cause the user to teleport to its impact location, resulting in 5♥♥♥ falling damage.[1][2] Teleporting with Ender Pearls does not work in Creative Mode. Upon teleportation, the player is briefly surrounded by the same particles generated by Enderman, and the thrown Ender Pearl will disappear. This feature was added in Beta 1.9 Prerelease 2.

Ender Pearls are necessary to craft Eyes of Ender, which are used to find strongholds and activate End Portals. Therefore, Ender Pearls are crucial to reaching The End.

From their introduction in 1.8 until The End was added in 1.9, Ender Pearls had no use.

Crafting

The placement of the Blaze Powder and Ender Pearl doesn't matter as long as they are both in the crafting grid.

Bugs

  • Using an Ender Pearl while inside a Boat will not teleport you, but you still suffer damage from it. The same thing happens if the player is inside of a Minecart or riding a Pig with a Saddle.
  • Throwing an Ender Pearl then going to sleep will wake you up and deal damage, but will not teleport you to where it landed.
  • Ender Pearls will collide with Nether Portals.
  • It is impossible to use an Ender Pearl in creative mode, if looking at a block within the player's range the player will appear to throw it but not teleport, if looking at a block not within the player's range nothing will happen.
  • Using Ender Pearl on vanilla server , player can create a fake cilent and use it to duplicate items as shown in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcSOKJKB0XE&feature=plcp&context=C408e09dVDvjVQa1PpcFPZmqzfFaZ6PW36laakneAkYNJvYJ3orC8=

Trivia

  • Because the damage taken while teleporting is 'falling damage', wearing boots enchanted with Feather Falling will reduce the damage taken. With a high enough level, one could travel a long distance very quickly.
  • It is possible to spawn a thrown Ender Pearl with the ID 14, but it does not teleport. This will only display the Ender Pearl sprite and disappear instantly.
  • If the player throws an Ender Pearl and then dies, the player will not teleport after respawning, nor will the player take fall damage from the pearl.
  • If the player throws an Ender Pearl upwards towards the bottom of a Lily Pad, the player is teleported into that space but is teleported inside of the Lily Pad, leaving the player free to swim through the water on which the Lily Pad is placed.
  • If the player throws an Ender Pearl in survival mode and changes to creative mode before the pearl lands, the player is still teleported.
  • When a player throws an Ender Pearl and enters The Nether before the pearl lands, when the player returns to the normal world, the pearl is gone.
  • If multiple Ender Pearls are thrown in succession, the player can only be hurt once from fall damage within about a one second span.
