The Ender Pearl is a new item in the 1.8 update and is sometimes dropped by Endermen upon death. Currently this item has no use. These pearls can be commonly found in bodies of water "naturally" as Endermen will occasionally walk into water and die there from water damage.
Use
The Ender Pearl has a "unique ability", as stated by Notch on his Twitter. The exact details of this ability are as of yet unknown.
Player-invented uses
There is a possibility that Ender Pearls could be used as currency in an economic multiplayer server, much as Slimeballs were used before the 1.7 update. Technically, this use would create an inflation of currency if Endermen were to be allowed to spawn naturally in the server.
Common Misconceptions
The Ender Pearl does not yet do anything, however many rumours and misconceptions currently surround its intended function and use. In particular, the Ender Pearl does not:
- Keep mobs from becoming aggressive.
- Allow the player to punch mobs from a distance (a feature exclusive to Creative Mode).
- Halve the distance in which Endermen will turn aggressive towards the wielder.
- Moves mobs 10 blocks away from you when right clicked.
- Prevent Endermen from attacking the player upon use (right click) for any amount of time.
- Prevent Creepers from exploding when near the holder.
- Damage you 5 hearts when attacking Endermen
- Give you more hearts.
- Cause mobs to become friendly.
- Cause Endermen to spawn near the Pearls.
- Allow the player to instantly break through blocks.
