Ender Chests are a type of chest that can store items. They function the same as normal chests, except that their contents are shared across all other Ender Chests placed anywhere, even in different dimensions.

Ender Chests do not drop their contents when broken. Items placed inside will remain present even if all instances of them are destroyed, and can be accessed by placing a new Ender Chest. Ender Chests have half the blast resistance of obsidian, making them still immune to explosions. They also emit light and a particle effect similar to that of an Enderman and Nether Portal. In SMP, Ender Chests have a separate inventory for each player. Destroying one will only drop 8 obsidian (unless broken using a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch), meaning another Eye of Ender would be required to be crafted again.[1]

Ender Chests cannot be made into double chests and thus can be placed adjacent to each other normally.[2]

Usage

  • Since items are persistent even when all Ender Chests are broken, the player can use them to recover items from anywhere safely, even if they destroy the chest.
  • Ender Chests can be very useful in Survival or Hardcore if the player is able to obtain the resources required to make one. At the cost of one inventory slot for the chest, the player gains another 27 extra slots, for a net gain of 26, adding up to a total inventory space of 62 different stacks you can carry.
  • Alternatively, they can be used for bulk supplies. This allows you to have your stockpiles of rare items (diamond and emerald blocks, Blaze Rods and other brewing supplies, etc.) available at every major base. Not to mention stacks of iron and gold blocks, and other sundries. Note that a stack each of flint and feathers costs 2 slots, but with just 8 logs, they will make 4 stacks of arrows. Similarly, including eggs, saplings, various seeds, and even building supplies, will make it much easier to start up new bases.
  • They can be placed at each station of a railway — toss in a minecart, and you'll always have a minecart handy. (Optionally, Powered and Storage minecarts as well.)
  • If placed in a new cave or mine, they can safely stash ores or valuables as those are acquired.
  • Broken Ender Chests drop 8 obsidian, losing the Eye of Ender. There are 3 methods to continue using chests.
    • Bring a Silk Touch pickaxe when mining (or stash one in the chest), and break the chest with it. This will drop the broken ender chest as an item.
    • If you bring multiple Ender Chests, you can place and break each of them, and if you bring 8 or fewer, inventory space is not wasted, as one inventory slot will be 64 or fewer obsidian.
    • Place some Eyes of Ender and a crafting table in the Ender Chest. This will allow you to easily retrieve those items before breaking it and crafting another Ender Chest.
  • Similar to obsidian and chests, Ender Chests cannot be moved by pistons.
  • Ender chests work between dimensions. This can be useful for carrying large inventories or valuables to or from the Nether or the End.
  • In SMP Ender Chests can be used as banks or "safe deposit boxes". Placed in towns and bases, they'll allow players to get at their stuff without risk of theft, "mugging", or griefing. They are commonly placed in spawn points.
  • An empty Ender Chest can be a useful last resort if you get hopelessly trapped or lost while exploring. Place the chest, load your inventory into it, then kill yourself. Using another Chest at home, whether already existing or newly crafted, this method will let you salvage most or all of your stuff.

A minecart with TNT is a block of TNT inside a minecart. Unlike normal TNT it can detonate instantly under certain conditions and its damage and blast radius is increased by its speed when it detonates.

Minecarts with TNT can be retrieved by attacking them, and by doing so it drops as an item.

Usage
A minecart with TNT detonates after a delay on these conditions:
* It moves over a powered activator rail.
* It is destroyed while in motion (except by a player in Creative mode).
* It is destroyed by fire, lava, or an explosion.
*java, it is hit by a fire charge.

The delay is 4 seconds for an activator rail, like the TNT block. For other causes there is a random delay between 0 and 1.9 seconds, but more likely to be close to 1.

It detonates instantly on these conditions:

* It hits the ground with a downward velocity of it falling more than three blocks, unless landing on any form of rail.
* It turns on a curved track too fast, with a solid block or entity located beside the track (in the previous movement direction).
* It is hit by a flaming arrow.
* It is pressed into a block or entity and has velocity.

Upon detonation it acts as normal TNT, exploding and damaging nearby blocks, players, and entities. Upon detonation after activating on activator rail, it does not destroy its rails and the blocks the rail is on, however other nearby carts can.java More than one minecart can be placed on the same rail block, allowing many of them to fit into a single block. They explode when touched, dealing large amounts of damage.

The explosion has a base power of 4, the same as regular TNT, but the game also adds a random bonus value up to 1.5 times velocity, but no higher than 7.5. This means that with a speed of 5 or higher the power will be a random value between 4 and 11.5. When triggered by an activator rail or by damage, the bonus value is calculated using the horizontal velocity of the minecart. When hit by a flaming arrow the velocity of the arrow is used instead. When triggered by fall damage, the fall distance divided by 10 is used.

Minecarts with TNT bounce off of other minecarts and cannot be linked to minecarts with furnaces.

12w21aThe Ender Chest was added to the game and shared the same inventory for all players on a server; Jeb stated that this would be changed to a separate inventory for every player in snapshot 12w24a.[3]
The Ender Chest was based off a suggestion thread on Reddit.[4][5] This idea was previously made into a mod by Ecu and ChickenBones.[6]
In response to some users' feelings on the functionality of Ender Chests, Jeb planned to test a feature he has yet to specify in relation to them.[7]
12w24aEnder Chests now work per-player in multiplayer (holds an inventory per player instead of shared across the world).
Ender Chests drop 8 obsidian when destroyed, except when mined with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch.

Issues

Issues relating to "Ender Chest" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia

  • If you put an item in an Ender Chest, and destroy the chest, the item does not pop out but when you place a ender chest again the item will be there, so only 1 ender chest is required, 2 are not needed to teleport items unless you are unable to carry around the ender chest. This acts sort of like when you could put items in a normal chest, break the chest and bring it with you for more inventory space. Although if you get lost, this is not a good idea because you will not be able to retrieve your stuff when you respawn unless you build another ender chest.
  • Despite being made out of obsidian, Ender Chests can be broken with any kind of pickaxe, just like an enchantment table.
    • For the same reason, the Ender Dragon can destroy the Ender Chest.
    • Also, actual Obsidian has twice the blast resistance.
  • Ender Chest contents do not interact with Hoppers, Droppers or Command Block's, presumably because in multi-player the hopper and dropper are impersonal machines and would be confused by the chest's player-specific inventories. Also the game code defines the player's ender chest contents as being contained inside the player not the Ender Chest. Like the crafting table, the Ender Chest simply allows you to access something contained inside you, not the block. This also makes it unable to be checked by testforblock commands.
  • An Ender Chest's particles exist only in a 1-block radius, so if the Chest is placed next to a wall its particles will not be seen on the other side.
  • Unlike Chests, changes to an Ender Chest's name are not reflected in its inventory GUI. This is probably because it will not be able to connect to other Ender Chests.
  • Like the Flower Pot and Item Frame, its idea was suggested by a reddit post.
