End stone is a block that appears in the End and, apart from generated structures, makes up all of the solid ground that exists in that dimension.
Obtaining[]
Breaking[]
End stone can be obtained using any pickaxe. If mined without a pickaxe, it drops nothing.

- ↑ Times are for unenchanted tools as wielded by players with no status effects, measured in seconds. For more information, see Breaking § Speed.
Natural generation[]
End stone is found only in the End, where it makes up all the floating islands that generate in the dimension.
Post-generation[]
Exit portal[]
The 16 end stone blocks under the edge of the exit portal are replaced when the ender dragon is respawned, and again when it is killed. Because end crystals, which are used to respawn the dragon, are renewable, this does make end stone renewable.
End gateways generate a small floating island of end stone when an entity travels through, for the entity to land on if there are no valid locations.[verify]
If an exit portal exists at a different position from the world origin (for example, an old exit portal from before 1.9), it will be completely converted into end stone if the ender dragon is re-summoned.
Usage[]
End stone has a blast resistance of 9, which is 3 more than that of ordinary stone. This is the highest blast resistance of any block movable by pistons besides anvils[Bedrock Edition only], ancient debris and block of netherite. It also cannot be picked up by endermen and cannot be destroyed by the ender dragon. In addition, it is the only block on which chorus flowers can be planted.

Note Blocks[]
End stone can be placed under note blocks to produce "bass drum" sound.
Sculk Catalyst Interactons[]
This block can be replaced by sculk both upon world generation and from a Sculk Catalyst. This is the only block that is both replaceable with Sculk AND cannot be destroyed by the Ender Dragon.

History[]
Java Edition | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1.0.0 | Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3 | A white cobblestone texture was added to the terrain.png presumably to be used as end stone; however it wasn't used by any block at the time. Language files from 1.1 suggest this texture to be the original texture for end stone, as the internal name and translation key was "whiteStone" | ||||||||||
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4 | The white texture has been changed, and end stone has been introduced as a block with the overhauled texture. | |||||||||||
End stone can be successfully mined only with a pickaxe, dropping cobblestone like normal stone. | ||||||||||||
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 5 | End stone now has a name in the inventory. | |||||||||||
End stone now drops itself when mined. | ||||||||||||
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 6 | Mining time now decreases with pickaxes. | |||||||||||
1.8 | 14w11b | End stone with numerical metadata variants 1 through 15, which are inaccessible through normal gameplay, now have no model rather than appearing identical to end stone. | ||||||||||
14w26a | Block metadata has been completely removed from this snapshot onwards with the introduction of block states. As this block never used block metadata at all prior to this version, fifteen unused, inaccessible metadata variants of it have been completely removed from the game:
| |||||||||||
1.9 | 15w31a | End stone can now be used to craft end stone bricks. | ||||||||||
15w44b | The ender dragon can now be resummoned using end crystals, a renewable resource, which regenerates end stone below the exit portal, making end stone renewable. | |||||||||||
1.13 | 17w47a | Prior to The Flattening, this block's numeral ID was 121. | ||||||||||
1.14 | 18w43a | The texture of end stone has been changed. | ||||||||||

Trivia[]
- End stone's texture is an inversion, geometric translation, and recoloration of the cobblestone texture. (Specifically, the texture is shifted 3 pixels up, and 8 pixels to the right.)
