The Gold Nugget is an item that was first introduced in the 1.9 Pre-release. These are obtained by killing Zombie Pigmen. About one in two Zombie Pigmen will drop a gold nugget. Gold nuggets can be crafted into Gold ingots, making Gold a renewable ore. A gold nugget can be crafted with a melon slice to make a Glistering Melon.

Trivia
- Since Zombie Pigmen carry golden swords with them, it is likely that the gold nuggets are pieces from the destroyed swords since they are not dropped upon death. Only 1/18th of the gold from pigmen's swords are salvaged (assuming 100% drop rate).
- With the addition of the gold nugget, gold has become a renewable resource, adding the metal block, the third tier of armor, the third tier of tools, and the Glistering Melon to the Renewable Resources list.
- It takes 81 gold nuggets to craft a single gold block, and a whopping 648 nuggets to craft a single golden apple.
