This article is about the Diamond gem. For the block, see Diamond (Block). For the ore, see Diamond (Ore).

A Diamond Gem is an item dropped when diamond ore is mined. This (along with items in general) is not available in Classic mode. Diamonds are considered one of the most valuable items in the game due to their rarity and usefulness as a crafting material. Tools and armor made from it are the most durable in the game. Diamonds can be used to make Shovels, Pickaxes, Axes, Hoes, Swords, Armor, Jukeboxes, and solid diamond blocks. Diamond gems are stackable.

Diamond Ore can be mostly found at levels below 18, and is found in small veins of 1-9 together. It cannot be mined using stone, wooden or golden pickaxes. It can only be mined using an iron or diamond pickaxe.

In the Java coding, Diamond is titled Emerald. The reason for this is that the diamond's original name during indev was Emerald. Over time this has changed as the community continued to call Emerald piece simply as "gems". As seen in the PAX demo of Beta 1.8, the new mob Endermen dropped Diamonds upon death. However, it's possible this was for the demo only, to encourage interaction with Endermen. As of the 1.8 pre release, diamond ore can be found in dungeon chests, and the Endermen drop Ender Pearls
