Menu screen in demo mode.
As of Minecraft weekly snapshot 12w16a (and stable release 1.3), the game contains a demo mode for users who have not purchased it yet and would like to try out the game first, which is very similar to the older PC Gamer Minecraft Demo. It will only be available in the full 1.3 release.
Restrictions
Following restrictions apply when playing the game in demo mode:
- Only one preset world ("Demo_World") with the same seed ("North Carolina") can be played. Any world generation options, such as the world type, seed and structures, are disabled.
- Survival is the only available game mode.
- Multiplayer is disabled.
- The game time is limited to five days (100 minutes real time). After the time ran out, players can still navigate though the world, but not interact with it. Resetting the demo world also resets the demo timer.
Launch parameters
For the snapshot releases, the minecraft.jar must be launched directly with special parameters to start the game in demo mode:
java -Xms512M -Xmx1G -cp "%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\*" -Djava.library.path=%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\natives net.minecraft.client.Minecraft Player - -demo
