Deepslate is a stone type found deep underground in the Overworld that functions similar to regular stone.

Obtaining

Breaking

Deepslate can be obtained only by mining it using a pickaxe with the Silk Touch enchantment, otherwise it drops cobbled deepslate. If broken with any other tool, it drops nothing. The breaking time for deepslate is roughly twice the time for stone.

Stone 1.15

Diamond 0.6

  1. Times are for unenchanted tools as wielded by players with no status effects, measured in seconds. For more information, see Breaking § Speed.

Natural generation

Deepslate generates in the Overworld in patches, attempting to generate 10 times per chunk in blobs of size 0-160, from elevations -4 to 16[only upcoming Java Edition 1.17 and Bedrock Edition 1.20.40]. All ores that generate replacing deepslate or tuff become their deepslate type.

Deepslate is found below y=0 (in negative layers, replacing stone) if the Caves and Cliffs datapack[upcoming: JE 1.17] is applied to a world or the Caves and Cliffs Experimental Gameplay toggle is turned on ‌[upcoming: BE 1.17.0].

Smelting

Deepslate can be smelted from cobbled deepslate.

Trivia

  • According to Brandon Pearce, the reason for changing the name "grimstone" to "deepslate" was because the word "grim" had too many connotations related to a negative feeling and therefore did not accurately describe the block as to what it actually was. The name "deepslate" was eventually chosen because of its location within the world and to more accurately represent that it is a type of slate.[1]
  • Similar to stone, the orientation of the texture varies depending on the coordinates.
