Daylight Detectors are blocks which were added in the snapshot 13w01a. In game they are called Daylight Sensors. Daylight Detectors are a special redstone mechanism which only emits a redstone signal if it is bright enough to do so, the strength of the redstone signal varies by the time of day. For example, the Daylight Detector will emit redstone for 15 blocks at midday but roughly 5 blocks at evening.
If the Daylight Detector is covered then it will emit no signal, which can be useful for controlling light levels with redstone lamps and pistons to cover and uncover the Daylight Detector. You can use a NOT gate (also known as an inverted redstone signal) to make lights come on at night and off during daytime.
