This article is about the data pack system. For the command, see Commands/datapack. For the resource pack system, see Resource pack.
Information icon
This feature is exclusive to Java Edition.

The data pack system provides a way for players to further customize their Minecraft experience. Data packs can be used to override or add new advancements, dimensions, functions, loot tables, predicates, recipes, structures, tags, world generation settings, and biomes without any code modification.

Usage

Data packs can be placed in the .minecraft/saves/(world)/datapacks folder of a world. Each data pack is either a sub-folder or a .zip file within the datapacks folder. After it is in the folder, a data pack is enabled for that world when the world is reloaded or loaded.

Data packs load their data based on the load order. This order can be seen and altered by using the /datapack command and is stored in the level.dat file.

The player can also select data packs at the world creation screen by clicking the Data Packs button and dragging-and-dropping their data pack folders/zip-files there. This is similar to the Resource Pack selection screen, and allows the player to enable data packs before the world is generated, and easily customize the load order too.

More than one directory for different namespaces may exist under the data directory.

pack.mcmeta

A data pack is identified by Minecraft based on the presence of the pack.mcmeta file in the root directory of the data pack, which contains data in JSON format.

  • The root object.
    •  pack: Holds the data pack information.
      •  description: A JSON text that appears when hovering over the data pack's name in the list given by the /datapack list command, or when viewing the pack in the Create World screen.
      •  pack_format: Pack version. If this number does not match the current required number, the data pack displays a warning and requires additional confirmation to load the pack. Requires 4 for 1.131.14.4, 5 for 1.151.16.1, 6 for 1.16.21.16.5, and 7 for 1.17.

pack.mcmeta, as used by the "vanilla" data pack in 1.16.2, as found in the client and official server jars:

{
    "pack": {
        "pack_format": 6,
"description": "The default data for Minecraft"
    }
}

data

This folder contains all the data under one or multiple namespaces. It can contain advancements, dimension, dimension_type, functions, loot_tables, predicates, recipes, structures, tags and/or worldgen, folders. The worldgen folder can contain biome, configured_carver, configured_feature, configured_structure_feature, configured_surface_builder, noise_settings, processor_list and template_pool folders.

The dimension, dimension_type and worldgen folders are currently experimental features.

Each advancement, function, loot table, predicate, structure, recipe and tag file can be placed directly in their respective folder but sub-folders are also allowed.

Snowballs are throwable combat items that hit but do not damage most mobs on impact.

Obtaining
Tutorials/Snow farming

Mining
A shovel without the Silk Touch enchantment can get 4 snowballs by breaking a snow block, and 1–8 snowballs by breaking or blasting snow layers – one per layer. The Fortune enchantment does not affect these amounts.

bedrock, snowballs are dropped from snow layers even when mined with a Silk Touch shovel.

Explosions
Creeper and TNT explosions leave snowballs in the resulting debris field if near snow.

Ravagers
BE, Ravagers destroy snow layers, dropping snowballs.

Pistons
BE, a block or piston head pushed into the position of snow layers destroys the snow layers, dropping snowballs. 1-3 layers drops 1 snowball, 4-5 layers drops 2 snowballs, 6-7 layers drops 3 snowballs and 8 layers drops 4 snowballs.

Snowballs can be thrown by using them. There is no charging time or cooldown for firing them, java Combat Tests meaning they can be thrown as fast as the player can click.

Like other projectiles, snowballs are affected by gravity: their range is the same as those of eggs and ender pearls, less than that of arrows fired from bows, and more than that of splash potions. In Bedrock Edition, players will receive damage and will be knockbacked.

Snowballs deal 3 each to blazes but they deal no damage to other mobs. Mobs still receive knockback and act the same as if they were being damaged (for example, zombified piglins who are hit by snowballs become aggressive). Players BE receive knockback, while players JE are unaffected.java Combat Tests

When fighting the ender dragon, end crystals are able to be destroyed by snowballs being thrown at them.

Snowball, like other projectiles, can be used to distract the warden. A warden walks towards the location where the snowball lands to inspect it, giving the player time to escape. However, if snowballs are fired too frequently (at least twice in 5 seconds), the warden walks straight to the player instead.
In the new versions they can hit players but just only in bedrock
Dispenser
Snowballs can be fired from dispensers.

A glass bottle is an item that can hold water, potions, honey, or dragon's breath.

Obtaining
Glass bottles can be obtained by crafting, drinking from bottles, fishing, or from witch drops.

Crafting
Drinking
Drinking a potion or honey bottle returns the empty glass bottle. Throwing a splash potion or a lingering potion does not return a glass bottle, but brewing a lingering potion gives back a glass bottle.

Mob loot
Witches have a chance of dropping 0–6 glass bottles upon death. This is increased by 3 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0–15 glass bottles.

Mud
Using a water bottle, splash water bottle or lingering water bottle on dirt, coarse dirt or rooted dirt will transforming it into a mud block, at the same time leaving the player with an empty glass bottle.

Cauldrons
Using a water bottle (or, bedrock, a potion, splash potion, or lingering potion) on a cauldron that is not yet full adds that liquid to the cauldron, leaving the player with an empty glass bottle.

Usage
Glass bottles can be filled to make water bottles, which can then be used to brew items with a brewing stand. Glass bottles are also used to hold the resulting potion.

Collecting liquids
Water
A bottle may be filled with water by holding it in the hand and using it on a water source block or a cauldron that has water in it. It can also be filled using a waterlogged block.java

Also, a bottle may be filled by powering a dispenser containing a bottle and pointed at a water source block. This does not work with cauldrons.

If filled via a water source, the water is unaffected. If filled via a cauldron, 1 of the water in the cauldron is removed. Therefore, using a cauldron to fill water bottles is inefficient, except in the Nether where it is normally the only way to fill bottles.

Potion
bedrock, a bottle may be filled with potion by using it on a cauldron containing potion. When the bottle is filled, 1 of the cauldron's potion is removed.

Honey
If a bee nest or beehive is full, the player can use a glass bottle on the block, or may power a dispenser that contains a bottle and is pointed at the block, which empties the block and creates a honey bottle. Honey bottles can also be emptied by using them in crafting recipes (such as sugar or honey block). However, a lingering potion use on tipped arrow recipe does not give the bottle back.

Dragon's breath
Using a glass bottle in clouds emitted when the ender dragon breathes or shoots a dragon fireball fills the bottle with dragon's breath.

When put 2 or more dragon's breath in the brewing stand, after the brewing process, a glass bottle will drop as an entity. However, if put only 1 dragon's breath in the brewing stand, after the brewing process, the glass bottle is consumed and cannot be retrieved.

A pufferfish is a poisonous food item that is used to brew Water Breathing potions.

Obtaining
Fishing
Pufferfish can be obtained through fishing. The pufferfish catch rate can be increased by Lure, which reduces wait time generally.
<!--1-6 exp-->

bedrock, pufferfish can be caught only when fishing outside jungle biomes and its variants (i.e. everywhere except in jungles).

Mob loot
Guardians and elder guardians
Guardians and elder guardians have a 2.5% chance of dropping a random fish upon death. This has a 13% chance of being pufferfish (0.325% chance of dropping a pufferfish). The chance of getting a fish can be increased by 1% per level of Looting, but the type of fish is not affected.

Pufferfish
Pufferfish always drop 1 pufferfish in its item form when killed. This drop is not affected by the Looting enchantment.

Usage
Food
Pufferfish restores 1 hunger and 0.2 saturation, but inflicts Hunger III for 15 seconds, Poison II for 1 minute, and Nausea I[JE only] or II[BE only] for 15 seconds. Unlike rotten flesh, it is not helpful to eat pufferfish while starving because they inflict more hunger than they earn.

Trading
Master-level fisherman villagers buy 1~4 or four pufferfish for an emerald.

Wolves
Bedrock, pufferfish can be used to feed a wolf, healing it by , but only when the wolf is not at full health. Unlike other wolf food, pufferfish cannot be used to speed up the growth of baby wolves, and cannot be used to breed them.

Trivia
* The consumption of pufferfish inflicting the player with Nausea and Poison is based on reality. Real pufferfish contain the dangerous tetrodotoxin within their organs, especially in the liver. Tetrodotoxin leads to quick death through respiratory paralysis. Muscle tissue and blood contain trace amounts. In East Asia, pufferfish are considered a delicacy known as fugu, as small parts of the fish are actually edible. Any chef preparing fugu must have special licensing/certification to prepare this dish.

19w38aAdded predicates folder where predicates can be defined.
Pre-release 1Changed the pack format number to 5.
1.16Tropical fish also have assigned names that can be seen after capture. In Java Edition, the smaller text under the item name is displayed showing the fish name, similar to the text that displays enchantments under enchanted items. In Bedrock Edition, the item name is displayed showing "Bucket of <fish name>". Their colors are mostly named according to the colored block names, though with a few exceptions:
  • White
  • Silver
  • Gray
  • Black
  • Brown
  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Lime
  • Green
  • Teal
  • Sky
  • Blue
  • Plum
  • Magenta
  • Rose

The base color comes first, and if the pattern color is different, it comes after that. Lastly, the fish bucket is given a name according to the shape and pattern of the fish:

Flopper Glitter Betty
Stripey Blockfish Clayfish
Tropical Fish Patterns
Kob Snooper Brinely
SunStreak Dasher Spotty

Some tropical fish don't follow the normal naming system, and instead, reference real-life fish species. Apart from these names, these types of fish aren't different from regular tropical fish in terms of design or behavior.

These varieties are:

Name Type
Anemone Orange-Gray Stripey
Black Tang Gray Flopper
Blue Dory ‌[Bedrock Edition only] Gray-Sky SunStreak

20w22aSlightly changed data pack loading to prevent custom data packs from crashing.
If data pack reload fails, changes are not applied and the game continues using previous data.
Changes to data pack list are stored only after successful reload.
If existing data packs prevent the world from loading, the game gives an option to load the world in safe mode, which loads only vanilla data pack.
Added --safeMode option for servers to load only with vanilla data pack.
Game now detects any critical data pack issues, such as required tags being missing, and prevent the world from being loaded.
Pre-release 1Data packs can now be loaded before the world is created.
Data packs can now add and change dimensions and dimension types.

Charcoal is an item obtained by smelting logs or wood. It is used as fuel, or for crafting torches and campfires. Unlike coal, charcoal cannot be traded with villagers, nor can it be crafted into a block of coal. Coal and charcoal also cannot stack together. It can be used as a substitute for coal, as both charcoal and coal have an equivalent duration when smelted.

Obtaining
Breaking
A campfire broken without the Silk Touch enchantment drops 2 charcoal.

Fuel
When used in a furnace as a fuel, a piece of charcoal lasts 80 seconds (smelting up to 8 items), the same as coal. Charcoal used as fuel lasts more than 5 times longer than wood planks or wood logs used as fuel, being more efficient than any other use of wood for smelting in Java Edition, but outstripped by wooden slabs in Bedrock.

Coal and charcoal are also the only fuels accepted by furnace minecarts. They provide approximately four minutes of transit each.

Le Tricolore (French for The Tricolour) is a joke item from Java Edition 23w13a_or_b.

Obtaining
One le tricolore and one la baguette is given to all players when French mode gets activated. Deactivating the mode will remove le tricolore from the player's inventory (but not la baguette; containers such as chests are not affected).

Le Tricolore is not available in the creative inventory, but can be obtained by using the give command.
