Weather shown on 2 biomes.

Weather was announced at April 7th 2011 and added in the 1.5 update, which was released on April 19th 2011.[1] The type of weather can depend on the biome; snow falls on arctic biomes, while others get rain. Deserts get no precipitation whatsoever. Weather is fairly rare though and does not occur often. It makes the sky darker, blocks out the sun, stars, and moon. Weather spells last for fifteen minutes. They come mostly after 7 minecraft days (might differ in some worlds). Know that when you sleep the timer for when snow/rain/lightning comes might reset, so go to bed if you want to skip the weather.

History

In early Classic, rain was introduced to the game to test out this feature. It was purely for cosmetic purposes at that time. The mechanics were simple, only testing if there is a block above to shelter the rain. It could be toggled on and off in-game using the F5 key. This feature later vanished when Indev was introduced,.

Minecraft Alpha brought a test for snow. Generating a world during that time brings a 50% chance to get a snowy world, where ice and snow will regenerate. This feature was removed with the introduction of biomes. Despite this, the particle effects file for rain and snow was never removed from the game. This allowed mods to easily re-enable the feature.

After Minecraft Beta 1.5's announcement, a preview video was uploaded onto the TeamMojang YouTube channel showing weather and other future updates.[2] Weather was then introduced the following week.

Types of Weather

In all biomes, except Tundra, Taiga, and Desert, rain will occasionally fall. It causes Wolves to get wet, crops to grow and will put out fires (except burning netherrack), but it will not cause lava to turn into cobblestone or obsidian. There is also a higher chance of catching fish whilst raining. In addition to this, rain will create a light sound around you while it falls.

Snow will only fall in the Tundra and Taiga biomes and causes water that does not have a block above it to become ice, as well as covering all blocks in snow with the exception of transparent blocks.

During both weather conditions, dark thunderstorms might occur, during which lightning strikes and thunder rumbles. Getting hit by lightning will result in the loss of two and a half hearts while playing on normal.

Effects

Lightning

Lightning during thunderstorm.

Rain and snow

  • Rain and snowfall are temporary but global occurrences.[3]
  • During rain and snow, thunderstorms become possible.
  • Water does not stop rain and snow like a solid block.
  • Rain and snow used to fall through certain blocks like glass, stairs and slabs. This was fixed a day after the release of 1.5.
  • Rain and snowfalls decrease the light level by 3, to light level 12 in full daylight.[4]
  • Rain can cause flowers to grow back.[citation needed]
  • Rain and snow cannot be seen through glass that is being broken

Thunderstorm

  • Thunderstorms are much darker than normal rain, at light level 7 or less. This is dark enough to spawn hostile mobs.[5]
  • Lightning creates fire where it strikes, but the rain usually puts the fire out before it can spread.
  • If Lightning strikes a pig, it morphs into a zombie pigman.[6]
  • If lightning strikes a creeper, it becomes supercharged and has a much more powerful explosion.[7]
  • Being struck by lightning or standing near a lightning strike deals two and a half hearts of damage, not including damage from the fire.
  • If a creeper is struck by lightning it glows blue.

Rain visible as falling underwater.

  • Occasionally, in an area with many biome changes, the rain will appear to fall onto snow whilst not melting it.
  • Sometimes rain falls in snow biomes.
  • When rain puts out a fire on Advanced OpenGL the area will stay lit (as though the fire is still there).
  • When lightning strikes, ice, water, portals, rain, snow, and other particles behind it become see through.
  • Rain falls underwater.
  • Ice doesn't regenerate
  • Some mobs have been killed during weather activities such as snow and rain in a manner similar to daylight, even at night.
  • Snow does not grow on bedrock.

Trivia

  • Rain is needed for a thunderstorm, even though in the game's files, thunderstorms can be activated separately.
  • Tamed wolves will run away to shelter during a thunderstorm.
  • Usually it starts to rain/snow at night or at dusk.
  • If it is raining/snowing and you go to sleep it will most likely have stopped before you wake.
  • Mobs that burn at dawn will not burn if it is raining (confirmed in SMP).
  • When it is raining, you can see the Sun/Moon if you open the Inventory Screen.
  • Rain and Snow will still fall even if you are above the cloud layer.
  • Rain and Snow will still fall even if you are in the water or lava.
  • Snow and Rain are both the same weather except in certain biomes it is snow instead of rain
  • When climbing down a Ladder, the rain seems to freeze until you get to the bottom or change direction, possibly indicating that is the speed of the rain.
