A composter is a block which converts crops and plants into bone meal.

Natural generation

Composters can generate in farms in villages.

Usage

Composters can be used to produce bone meal. To do so, the player must use any of a selection of items on the composter. The composter can also be used to recycle unneeded plant items. When an adjacent comparator is facing away from the composter, a comparator signal strength of up to 8 is emitted depending on the fullness of the block.

Composting

The composter can be filled with compost, which is done by adding compostable items to it. See the table below for all supported items. These items have different levels of compostability. The higher the percentage of an item, the more likely it is for that item to add another layer of compost to the block when used on it. Each layer of compost has a podzol-like appearance. When the composter reaches the 7th layer of compost, the compost will change appearance indicating that bone meal can be collected by using the composter a final time.

The following table shows the items that can be used in a composter, the percent chance for an item to add a level of compost, the item count required for a 50% chance to add a level, and the average amount of items needed to fill a composter:

10% 20% 50% 80% 100%
Number of items required for a 50% chance to add a level
≈6.58 ≈3.11 1 ≈0.43 N/A
Average Number of items required to fill a composter
70 35 14 8.75 7

Hoppers

Composters can interact with hoppers by placing a composter on the upper side of a hopper and producing bone meal from the composter, which will cause the bone meal to be collected into the hopper automatically (see Hopper § Redstone component for more details about hopper-specific mechanics). Hoppers cannot be drawn into the sides of composters.

Hoppers can also push items into the composter from above.
