A composter is a block which converts crops and plants into bone meal.

Usage

Composters can be used to produce bone meal. To do so, the player must use any of a selection of items on the composter. The composer can also be used to recycle your plant items that you don't need.

Levels

The composter can be filled with compost, which is done by adding compostable items to it. See the table further below for all supported items. These items have different levels of compostability. The higher the percentage of an item, the more likely it is for that item to add another layer of compost to the block when used on it. Each layer of compost has a podzol-like appearance. When the composter reaches the 7th layer of compost, the compost will change appearance indicating that bone meal can be collected by using the composter a final time.

Hoppers

Composters can interact with hoppers by placing a composter on the upper side of a hopper and producing bone meal from the composter, which will cause the bone meal to go through the hopper and if there is a container under it such as a chest, furnace, or another hopper, it will end up there (see Hopper § Redstone component for more details about hopper-specific mechanics). Hoppers cannot be drawn into the sides of composters.

Hoppers can also push items into the composter from above.

Compostable list

The following table shows the items that can be used in a composter, as well as the percent chance of adding a level in the composter per use:

Steak (java) or cooked beef (bedrock) is a food item obtained from cows, mooshrooms, or from cooking raw beef.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Cows
When a cow or mooshroom is killed, it drops raw beef. If a cow dies while on fire, it drops steak instead. If the cow is killed using a weapon with the Looting enchantment, the maximum number of steak drops increases by 1 per level.

Cooking
Raw beef can be cooked in a furnace, smoker, or campfire. Each steak removed from a furnace output slot gives 0.35 experience (22.4 experience per stack).

Villager gifts
java, butcher villagers may give players steak if they have the Hero of the Village status effect.

Usage
Food
To eat steak, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 8 hunger and 12.8 hunger
saturation.

Wolves
Steak can be used to breed and heal tamed wolves, lead them around, and make baby tamed wolves grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time.

Feathers are items dropped by chickens and parrots, as well as tamed cats as morning gifts.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Adult chickens drop 0–2 feathers upon death. The maximum is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0–5 with Looting III.

Parrots drop 1–2 feathers upon death. The maximum is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 1–5 with Looting III.

A fox sometimes spawns holding a feather, which always drops upon death. Alternatively, the player can drop a food item, causing the fox to drop the feather in favor of the food.

Natural generation
Cat gifts
Cat#Gifts

Tamed cats have a 70% chance of giving the player a "morning gift", and the gift has a 16.13% chance to be a feather.

Usage
Helmet
<div style='float:right'></div>
While a feather cannot be equipped in the head slot in Survival mode, equipping it using commands causes it to appear completely upright unlike other items.
